Osborne, Sirens blank Charge 4-0 in PWHL season opener

OTTAWA — Kayle Osborne earned a 28-save shutout as the New York Sirens opened their season with a 4-0 win over the Ottawa Charge on Saturday in Professional Women’s Hockey League action.

Osborne took the No. 1 role after longtime starter Corinne Schroeder signed with the Seattle Torrent, one of two expansion teams to join the PWHL this season.

Saturday’s shutout was the second of Osborne’s PWHL career, the first also coming against Ottawa in a 3-0 win last season.

Taylor Girard, with two goals and an assist, Maddi Wheeler and Maja Nylen Persson, with an empty-netter, all scored in the final 12:11 of the contest for New York (1-0-0-0).

Gwyneth Philips stopped 38 shots for Ottawa (0-0-0-1).

The Sirens broke the silence with just over 12 minutes to play, finally forcing a goal past Philips. After turning away Wheeler, then stopping Girard’s initial follow-up, the second rebound finally snuck under Philips after 28 straight saves.

Looking to respond, Charge forward Rebecca Leslie’s saucer pass sprung Taylor House on a breakaway, where Osborne stuffed the chance.

But Girard struck again with 6:21 to go, on an assist from Wheeler. This time it was a pass from behind the Ottawa net that left Girard to shoot into an empty cage. Girard assisted Wheeler’s goal three minutes later.
