While it may have come later than normal, Southern Alberta received its first blanket of snow—which then melted and froze—and Lethbridge Police are reminding drivers adjust their driving for the conditions.

Sgt. Tony Ramatowski, of the traffic response for LPS, says with the added snow and ice, it is crucial to adjust the distance between yourself and other motorists and to obey all posted signage.

In bad conditions, he says to take it slow, especially going around corners and while braking, keeping headlights and taillights on so your vehicle is visible to others, and getting winter tires, if possible.

“Those do help in any temperature (below) six degrees, so they actually do make a difference on the ice and snow.”

Ramatowski also encourages motorists to keep an emergency kit in their vehicle in case they end up stranded.

“Have an emergency kit in your vehicle, carry blankets, some extra batteries, a flashlight, some food, a first aid kit just in the event you do get stranded on the side of the road.”

While it may be tempting to get an extra five-minutes of sleep, Ramatowski reminds motorists all windows need to be clear, along with the top of the vehicle before operating the vehicle, as snow can fall down, covering the windshield and clogging the wiper blades.

Having covered windows and/or mirrors is a ticketable offence.

Ramatowski says business will resume as usual for LPS and while collisions may increase with the poor road conditions, most collisions are forwarded to the Collision Reporting Centre (CRC) located in the Police Station.
