The Lethbridge Hurricanes host the Moose Jaw Warriors tomorrow night in their first home game in three weeks after a seven-game road trip and Lethbridge will have to deal with one of the top offensive juggernauts in the league.
“They wanna play run and gun,” said Ryan Aasman, Hurricanes assistant coach.
“They don’t mind sharing chances, they’ll give up just as many as they take, but they really wanna take those odd man rushes off the rush and find ways to create off the entry.”
The Canes will have to be cognizant of a strong Warriors powerplay that is third in the league and operating at a 29.3 per cent efficiency.
“We gotta find ways to make sure that we’re not taking the same dumb penalties that we have and putting ourselves on our heels,” said Aasman.
Friday’s game will be the first of a four-game homestand for the Canes.
“I think it’s just important to make the most out of it now,” said Aasman, after Tuesday’s practice.
“We can just focus on Friday and I think that’s really important that our guys get back to a live in the moment mentality where we’re just focusing on the next task at hand.”
This will be the first time that Owen Berge will be facing his former team since being traded by them to Lethbridge last month.
“Definitely excited,” said Berge.
“There’s a little more motivation going into that game but it’s still another game (and) still prepare the same way. So, the only difference is you know more of the guys on the other side but can use that to my advantage a bit and help out the team.”
Berge thinks of his old team as one that is high scoring.
“I think they’re one of the highest scoring teams … in the league and they’re gonna bring that,” said Berge.
“We gotta be able to take their chances away off the rush and be able to use our hard work and skill to get in their zone.”
Moose Jaw’s 99 goals for is tied fourth best in the WHL.
Moose Jaw won the first meeting of the season 4-2 back on Oct. 24.
Puck drop is 7 p.m. tomorrow night between the two teams at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
