Lethbridge Sport Council were one of 55 recipients of a Spotlight Grant from Canadian Women & Sport this week.
The Spotlight Grant is meant to fund initiatives that help in finding opportunities for girls to experience sport and physical activity benefits.
LSC received $5,000 of the $425,000 doled out by CWS to organizations across Canda and 25 per cent of the funds will go towards covering the entry costs of the ongoing women and girls-only swim sessions for the first 60 participants from January to March.
The program is in partnership with Immigrant Services and Recreation Excellence.
“They’ve been wildly popular,” said Susan Eymann, LSC executive director, on the swim sessions.
“it’s interesting because they (participants) show up to learn how to swim but also make connections (and) just expand their social network.”
The women and girls-only swim sessions welcome anyone.
There is no sign-up required and occurs once a month at Stan Siwick pool.
The remaining 75 per cent of the grant will go to help LSC launch a sport bank in the city in early 2026.
The sport bank will function as a distribution centre of use sports equipment for female athletes who qualify for sport registration costs in various programs and then in turn will get sports equipment that is free.
The grant will allow for LSC to purchase sporting equipment for girls.
“It’s to help us start getting this equipment at the beginning until we have a base of good donations,” said Eymann.
The sport bank is expected to open on the north side of the city.
