The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks women’s basketball team have shown improvement since the first tipoff of the season to the end of the first semester this past weekend.
Head coach Ken McMurray has been enthused with team’s defensive play.
“Defensively, our kids are sound, they try hard and for the most part I’ve been pleased with that,” said McMurray.
Team chemistry has been the strength of the team through the first semester of the season.
“That’s probably one of our biggest strengths,” said McMurray.
“The girls love each other, they have really good chemistry and they’re a close-knit team … For us to be successful we all have to support each other, build each other (and) when things aren’t going well we need to stay positive and play through things.”
The Kodiaks need to work on executing moving forward into the season.
“I think the difference between us and some of the elite teams in the province is their execution,” said McMurray.
“Sometimes we get in situations where we just panic a little bit and we stop running our offence”
The Kodiaks began the season 1-4 before battling back to win three straight games to get to the .500 win percentage mark and McMurray was asked how they build on a run like that going into the second half.
“I think with a young squad, confidence is everything,” said McMurray.
“They need to keep getting better at responding to struggles and playing through them and being mentally tough. And when your shot’s not going and things aren’t going well, you always have to have that next play mentality.”
Lethbridge is in a three-way tie for third place with SAIT and Ambrose University with eight points after the first semester.
The Kodiaks resume play in the second semester when they host St. Mary’s University on Jan. 10.
