The Lethbridge Hurricanes are ready for the excitement of watching stuffed bears be unleashed onto the ice once one of their players scores the first goal during the annual Canadian Tire Toque and Teddy Toss game tonight against the Wenatchee Wild.
“It gives you a home opener vibe which is really great,” said Ryan Aasman, Canes assistant coach.
“The building has a lot of energy to it and it’s always fun. It’s always fun to see who’s gonna score. Sometimes it’s somebody that maybe you predicted but a lot of the times it’s a guy that you didn’t see coming and it maybe boosts his spirits a little bit and turns around a year for him.”
Aasman credits the organization for the job they do on Teddy Toss night.
“I think our organization does a top-notch job running it and our fans do a great job supporting it,” said Aasman.
A game like this is a memory that goes on for the players for a long time.
“It’s really the fans that bring you the experience,” said Aasman.
“I think that’s what captivates our guys to have such a cool experience and then just the whole visualization of the bears flying over, whether that’s on the video or in real time, it’s just really cool.”
Aasman predicts that captain Logan Wormald will score Toque and Teddy Toss goal.
Wormald has been a few of the Toque and Teddy Toss Games throughout his career in Lethbridge and feels the team is super amped up for the game.
“We’ve been talking about it for awhile and everyone’s super excited and knows how much of a fun game it’s gonna be,” said Wormald.
Wormald predicts Luke Cozens will find the back of the net for the toss goal.
This will be Taber product Kade Duell’s first Toque and Teddy Toss game experience in his junior career.
“I (have) got a lot of friends and family coming to the game, so (it would) be pretty sweet to send the bears flying,” said Duell.
Duell is looking forward to the crowd experience.
“I heard it’s gonna be almost sold out, so that’ll be exciting,” said Duell.
The Hurricanes aim to gather 4,775 bears and 1,100 toques from the toss to give to local charities which includes the Chinook Regional Hospital and Lethbridge Family Services Angel Tree Foundation to name a few.
“It’s amazing,” said Wormald, on helping the community.
“(It) goes to a good cause and it’s all super important to us.”
“It’s pretty neat to bring the community together for a Teddy Bear Toss game and then donate all the bears,” said Duell.
The stuffed animals that fans bring must be placed in a clear, plastic bag.
Game time is at 7 p.m. at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
