Longueuil mayor seeks probe into police force’s actions in aftermath of teen’s death

MONTREAL — The mayor of Longueuil, Que., is asking the Quebec government to investigate police actions in the aftermath of a fatal police shooting involving a 15-year-old boy.

Mayor Catherine Fournier says she took the exceptional decision to ask Public Security Minister Ian Lafrenière to step in after letters from the police watchdog to Longueuil’s police chief alleged breaches of legal and regulatory obligations.

Fifteen-year-old Nooran Rezayi was shot dead by police on Sept. 21.

Fournier notes that the city cannot interfere in police operations and that after she was informed of the letters in November, she asked Lafrenière to investigate under the Police Act.

According to Radio-Canada, which obtained copies of the letters, the watchdog — known as the BEI — questions an extended period of time between the shooting and when it was contacted.

Fournier says in a statement that police chief Patrick Bélanger was informed of the mayor’s request and is committed to co-operating with an investigation.
