Quebec teachers’ union survey says 90 per cent have faced violence on the job

By Canadian Press on December 15, 2025.

MONTRÉAL — A Quebec teachers’ union says 90 per cent of its members said in a recent survey they were victims of some form of violence.

Catherine Renaud, a vice-president of the union, says 81 per cent reported being a victim of psychological or verbal abuse while 63 per cent reported physical violence.

Nearly 11 per cent of respondents reported sexual violence.

The union, known as the FAE, says teachers have the right to be in a workplace that is free of violence and it is calling on Education Minister Sonia LeBel to work with them to address the issues.

The union says more than 2,400 teachers took part in the online questionnaire in April and May 2025, out of its 65,000 members across the province.

The polling industry’s professional body, the Canadian Research Insights Council, says online surveys cannot be assigned a margin of error because they do not randomly sample the population.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 15, 2025.
