Lack of action on Neudorf’s recall draws concern from organization

A grassroots organization, AB. Resistance, has been helping organizers of recall petitions understand the rules of a recall and are saying they are deeply concerned with the lack of action with MLA Lethbridge East Nathan Neudorf’s recall.

What began as a way to encourage people to send letters to their MLA has turned into helping people understand their democratic rights and have information as to what is actually happening in the government.

Marg Tokar, founder of AB. Resistance, calls herself a former “lifelong Conservative,” says she didn’t like the trajectory as to where the UCP was headed and began taking registrations through X, back when it was Twitter and encouraged them to call their MLA.

Tokar says AB Resistance has no part in organizing or initiating recalls, but rather assist organizers through the process.

“What we do is walk them through the process of what a recall is, the rules and any questions they have.”

AB resistance was approached by a group in Lethbridge, led by Jeff Milner, who wanted to make sure they had everything organized before submitting the paperwork and unfortunately was scooped by Ryan Tanner, who the Herald still hasn’t gotten a hold of despite many efforts.

Only two known residents were invited to a meeting to sign canvassing papers, where they met a canvassing volunteer by the name of Mike.

One of the residents refused to sign the form, after Mike said he didn’t know who Ryan Tanner was and the other still has not received her canvassing package from Elections Alberta.

With 26 active recalls throughout the province, Tokar says Lethbridge East is the only one that has appeared to be done in bad faith and believes the lack of funding to Elections Alberta is affecting their work as a whole.

“Elections Alberta has not been given the funding to handle of of these calls…I think it as affected everything they’re doing, all of the projects, anything that has been put to them under their purview are suffering as a result of not having the funding they need.”

She adds that Premier Danielle Smith’s rhetoric that the recalls are being organized by unions and the NDP is simply not true.

“Having been in touch with every recall, not one of them has been initiated, organized or directed by either unions or the NDP.”

While the Lethbridge-East recall is legal, according to the recall legislation, Tokar says those in the constituency are unable to have their voice heard.

“It all comes down to the fact that Lethbridge-East, their democratic rights have been taken from them.”

She adds that due to the serious nature of these democratic rights, she, and many others, will not allow this to be swept under the rug.

There is a rally being planned for Feb. 22 outside of Neudorf’s office as a protest to the voices of Lethbridge East being silence by this recall.
