MONTREAL — Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty is pushing back against racially abusive social media posts targeting the CF Montréal defender.
Marshall-Rutty posted several abusive posts to his Instagram account on Wednesday. Some of the posts contain racial slurs or monkey emojis.
Marshall-Rutty, who is of Jamaican, German, and Mi’kmaq descent, said in an Instagram post that the abuse has been going on for “a while” and he won’t let it continue.
In a statement supporting Marshall-Rutty, CF Montréal said it “strongly condemns” the comments and is in contact with Major League Soccer to review the situation.
The 21-year-old Marshall-Rutty was born in Brampton, Ont., and came up through the Toronto FC system before being traded to rival Montreal in 2024.
He spent the 2025 MLS season on loan to Charlotte and has since returned to Montreal.
