Founded in June 1976, McNally began with portable asphalt operations out of Fort Macleod before following work across Western Canada. In 2004, the company established permanent operations in Lethbridge.
McNally has been part of the Volker Stevin family of companies since 2011, and in recent years, closer alignment across the organization has created more opportunities to share expertise and support projects across the region.
Peter Principalli, Regional Manager South with Volker Stevin Construction said McNally Contractors, along with other long-standing Alberta businesses, is now operating under the Volker Stevin name, bringing added scale and flexibility while keeping Lethbridge as a key centre of operations.
“The work, the people, and the community matter here. Being part of Volker Stevin gives us more room to grow, without losing what’s always worked for us,” said Principalli.
Current and completed projects in Southern Alberta include the Henderson Lake Trail, Akamina Parkway, City of Lethbridge sanitary upgrades, Lethbridge Airport runway, and regional industrial and renewable energy developments.
When talking about the changes, Principalli said this alignment strengthens their clarity and stability.
“It brings focus on doing the best work that we possibly can, providing for the local communities and continuing to be the recognized name in Alberta,” said Principalli.
He added that the largest change will be from the outside looking in, bringing a more structured look to the organization.
“When you call us, we’re bringing all of our years of experience and knowledge to whatever projects we’re constructing on and a broad scope,” said Principalli.
He said by operating under the Volker Stevin name, they have access to expertise from other branches and this allows them to leverage skills, workers, machinery, etc. to tackle any job across the province.
“What we may not do internally here in Lethbridge, we might do internally at one of our other locations, so we can bring that expertise here,” said Principalli.
He said their commitment extends beyond the job site. The company has a long history of supporting community organizations and initiatives, including Threads of Life, CANstruction, and local sports, cultural, and safety-focused charities.
In December, its annual support of the Lethbridge Food Bank reached new heights. Traditionally funded through a staff-led raffle that raised approximately $2,000 each year, the effort was expanded in 2025 when Volker Stevin increased the contribution to $10,000.
