A new partnership – Central Farms RNG – is bringing renewable energy production to Coaldale.

The renewable energy project is one of several across the province that’s being supported by the Alberta government with $28 million invested in new technologies to help increase energy production while decreasing environmental impacts.

In an announcement on Feb. 12, project partners, government representatives, dignitaries and guests gathered at the Kasko Cattle Co. headquarters in Coaldale to hear details on the new renewable natural gas (RNG) facility, that will be located on-site at the Kasko Cattle Co. home lot.

“This funding will help build a brand new facility that turns agricultural by-products into renewable natural gas – literally turning waste into energy, and they’ll pair it with carbon capture to reduce emissions along the way,” said Grant Hunter, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas.

“This funding will also test a new technology never used in Canada before, to make pipelines safer and more secure. It will test ways to help companies get more energy out of existing wells and clean up sites faster when they’re done.”

Central Farms RNG is a collaboration between Kasko Cattle Co. Ltd., KCL Cattle Company Ltd., and Taurus RNG.

Through the industry-funded Technology, Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) program, Alberta’s government is investing $28 million to support six projects using technologies that will help energy companies save money, reduce environmental impacts and stay globally competitive.

Those projects, spanning the province’s energy sector and economy, include those  in Calgary, Edmonton, Suffield, Yellowhead County, Leduc County and Coaldale.

Investments range from $625,000 to $12 million per project, with the projects creating about 1,000 jobs and adding almost $167 million to Alberta’s economy by 2027.

Emissions Reduction Alberta board chair Kelly Ogle, who was one of four speakers at the announcement, noted the impact of the Coaldale project.

“Here in Coaldale the team at Central Farms is demonstrating how agricultural by-products can be used more effectively by transforming materials that would otherwise be discarded, into valuable new resources,” said Ogle.

He said if successful, the six projects announced Thursday, are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 72,000 tonnes each year.

The flagship project in Coaldale will be the world’s first integrated anaerobic digestion and carbon sequestration facility producing renewable natural gas (RNG), and will transform 130,000 tonnes of manure per year into 360,000 GJ of renewable natural gas (RNG) at the Taurus RNG facility constructed on-site at the Kasko Cattle Co. home lot.

Coaldale Mayor Jack Van Rijn said this project puts the region on the world stage.

“Being home to the first fully integrated anaerobic digestion and carbon capture facility demonstrates that southern Alberta is leading the future of renewable energy and sustainable agriculture.”

He also noted the impact the project and RNG facility will have in Coaldale and across the region.

“A $70.5 million investment of this scale is a major win for Lethbridge County, Coaldale, and the entire region, reinforcing our position as a hub for agricultural innovation and energy development,” said Van Rijn. “With Coaldale being the nearest municipality to the construction site, our community will see direct economic benefits through construction activity, skilled trades, and long-term operational employment.”

Construction of the RNG project will begin later this year and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

“We are thrilled to be receiving support from the Government of Alberta through Emissions Reduction Alberta. With this support and our capital commitment, we can proceed with a first-of-its-kind fully integrated renewable energy and carbon capture and sequestration project in the heart of Alberta’s cattle farming region in partnership with Kasko Cattle and KCL Cattle companies,” said Phillip Abrary, CEO and president of Taurus Canada Renewable Natural Gas Corp. “This will pave the way for establishing a globally leading region in renewable energy and sustainable farming practices.”

He noted the facility will produce renewable natural gas that will power about 4,000 households.

“We’ll be capturing and sequestering 15,000 tonnes of C02 every year below ground,” said Abrary, noting the collaboration between government and industry, working together to create more sustainable agricultural practices. “Energy, sustainability and economic activity in a rural community – it’s a win-win for everyone.”

Ryan Kasko, CEO of Kasko Cattle Co. shared a bit of the company’s history in Coaldale, at Thursday’s announcement, and spoke about the exciting opportunity for all Albertans.

“I think for the future of what we’re trying to do as Kasko Cattle, this is a perfect compliment. We want to be able to produce more food with less resources, lower our environmental impact and create partnerships for our community and all of Alberta,” said Kasko.
