Family Day is back, and Lethbridge is bursting with ways to celebrate together—whether you head out into the city or stay cozy at home. From hands-on science to campus explorations, parks, or even living-room adventures, there’s something for every family.

First celebrated in Saskatchewan in 1990, Family Day was created to encourage families to spend quality time together. Over the years, the tradition has spread across provinces, giving communities the perfect excuse to explore, play, and enjoy each other’s company.

With many places like the Lethbridge Public Library closed for the holiday, here are places families can go for a day filled with fun, learning, and connection—without the distractions of work or school.

The University of Lethbridge (U of L) invites families to Play Day 2026 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Co-op Centre for Sport & Wellness. Play Day is billed as Southern Alberta’s largest free Family Day event.

This year’s “Building Blocks” theme features hands-on activity zones including LEGO and cardboard building, bouncy castles, climbing walls, swimming in the Max Bell Aquatic Centre, a toddler Fitastic Play zone, a Toonie BBQ, and face painting. Families are encouraged to bring gym shoes, comfortable clothing, and swimsuits.

Play Day visitors can also explore the U of L campus with tours of science labs, art exhibits, and interactive STEM demonstrations from Destination Exploration, Let’s Talk Science, iGEM, and a LEGO/DUPLO “Little Lux” sensory room, while meeting professors and students. Attendees can also take advantage of 10% off U of L summer camps during the event.

The Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge invites families to celebrate Family Fun Day 2026 at Casa (230 8 St S, Lethbridge) on Monday, February 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a free afternoon of drop-in activities including Box City, button making, community painting, drawing, and interactive sessions like Drawing to Music and World Drumming with the U of L Conservatory of Music, plus early summer camp registration.

The Helen Schuler Nature Centre (1 Indian Battle Rd. S.) is hosting a free, drop-in event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering a relaxed, family-friendly outing. Families can discover, play and learn at their own pace while exploring indoor and outdoor activities, including the Winter Wild Neighbours exhibit on local wildlife, The Power of Play exhibit featuring dress-up, building and art stations, and interactive outdoor stations along the river valley. Everyone is welcome.

For a cozy, budget-friendly outing, The Movie Mill (1710 Mayor Magrath Dr S) is featuring $3 Family Morning Movies for Family Day and Reading Week on Feb. 16, 18, and 19, 2026. The lineup includes family favourites at approximately 10:00 a.m., such as The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, Megamind, and The Care Bears Movie.

If fresh air is calling, parks, walking trails, and the river valley offer a natural playground for all ages. Bundle up and turn a simple stroll into a mini adventure. Some local community centres may also host drop-in games and crafts for families looking for something relaxed and low-cost.

Prefer to stay in? Board games, backyard scavenger hunts, DIY craft projects, or even a family movie marathon can create just as many lasting memories. A living room can be just as lively as a gymnasium, and a kitchen table can spark just as much joy as a museum exhibit.

In the end, it doesn’t matter whether you stay home or head out and about, spend the day indoors or outdoors. What matters most is that you’re spending it together. The location—campus, theatre, trail, or couch—is simply the backdrop. The real celebration is the connection.

No matter how you choose to mark the day—high-energy or low-key, bundled up outside or cozy inside—Family Day is about shared time, shared laughter, and moments that become family stories.
