If you’re wandering downtown and caught a whiff of something sweet drifting from the corner of Fifth St and 4th Ave, you’ll know why: Grammie’s Little Bakery has officially opened, and the aroma and sight of freshly baked treats is impossible to ignore.
What started as a humble kitchen experiment in 2023 quickly became a favorite at local farmers markets and has now found a permanent home on what locals are already calling “the sweetest corner” of Lethbridge.
It’s a story as comforting as warm cupcakes fresh from the oven. The bakery began in Angela Calvin’s kitchen, with flour-dusted countertops and a dream bigger than a triple-layer cake.
Regulars at farmers markets would line up for her signature baked goods which included cupcakes, cinnamon buns, carrot cakes and brownies and soon it became clear: Grammie’s needed more than a stall at market; it needed a downtown address of its own.
“When we started, it was just our kitchen and a booth at the farmers market,” says Calvin. “We never imagined we’d end up here on Fifth Street. The support from our community has meant everything to us.”
That address now sits proudly in the heart of the city and the official ribbon cutting Saturday brought together neighbors, fellow downtown merchants, elected officials…fans of all things sugary.
The ceremonial ribbon cutting included the Chamber of Commerce, Councilor Jenn Schmidt-Rempel, and MP Rachael Thomas all praising the small business for its role in energizing the downtown core.
“It’s always exciting to see a new venture in our downtown,” Councilor Schmidt-Rempel said. “Small businesses like Grammie’s are the backbone of our local economy, and every new eatery helps revitalize the streets, bring in foot traffic, and create a vibrant community space.”
The bakery itself is a cozy, whimsical space, with glass cases brimming with cupcakes, tarts, and cookies that look too pretty to eat—but don’t worry, the temptation is real. For owner Calvin, opening a downtown location has been a mix of thrill and risk.
“I’m so proud to open this beautiful little shop. It’s something unique for the city, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible team working alongside me and the support of our friends and customers,” she says.
MP Rachael Thomas was on hand to celebrate the milestone, noting that small businesses are the backbone of Canada’s economy.
“Not only do ventures like Grammie’s offer delicious treats, they also showcase talent, hard work, and entrepreneurial spirit,”Thomas said. “Each new business downtown strengthens the community, creates jobs, and inspires others to take risks and invest in our city.”
The excitement around the bakery isn’t just about cupcakes, although they are undoubtedly a star attraction. It’s also about what businesses like Grammie’s bring to downtown: jobs, energy, and a reason for people to keep coming back.
In a city where every storefront counts, each new opening contributes to a ripple effect that benefits neighboring shops, restaurants, and cafes.
The customers who were already lined-up there, even before the ribbon was cut and the first customers lined up, made it clear Grammie’s Little Bakery is poised to become a downtown staple.
The space feels warm and inviting, like the baked goods themselves—carefully crafted, a little indulgent, and impossible not to love. For locals who have watched this venture grow from market stall to full-fledged bakery, it’s a sweet success story in every sense of the word.
Whether you’re a devoted sweet tooth or just downtown for a stroll, this corner now offers a delicious excuse to linger a little longer. And as Grammie’s team serves up treats with a side of smiles, one thing is certain: the downtown corridor has never tasted so sweet.
