With only eight games remaining in the regular season, the Lethbridge Hurricanes are hoping for some success down the stretch.
Lethbridge (17-40-2-1) will hit the road this weekend for a two-game trip through southern Saskatchewan this weekend with games against the Regina Pats (23-29-6-1) and Moose Jaw Warriors (21-33-5-2)
The Hurricanes are coming off a 6-0 loss to the Edmonton Oil Kings on Saturday night at Roger’s Place in Edmonton.
Head coach Matt Anholt says the Hurricanes will need to bring their best in both games.
“I thought against Edmonton, I didn’t think our execution was very good in our system play. I think we’re playing two teams that are going to be really desperate. Obviously, Regina wouldn’t be very happy with their outcome last night against Medicine Hat. Two teams that are really vying for those last two spots with Red Deer, so they’re gonna be really hungry. It’ll be a two game test for our guys.”
Lethbridge has split their two meetings so far this season against Regina, with the home team being victorious in both matchups. The Warriors have taken two of three meetings in the season series against the Hurricanes. Moose Jaw snapped a lengthy nine game losing streak with a 7-2 win at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena back on Feb. 25.
Anholt says the game was closer then the scoreboard would indicate.
“Not giving them as much time and space. I can’t remember exactly what the shots were in the game, but I know the chances were pretty close. They just had some elite shots that led to goals. We didn’t have an overall high compete in the third period in that game. For me, a lot of it had to do with our response after that third goal for them. I think it’s a lot closer game than the score indicated.”
With eight games remaining on their schedule, the Hurricanes can reach a maximum of 53 points if they were to win out the rest of the way. Red Deer currently holds the eighth and final playoff spot with 50 points while Moose Jaw, who is in ninth, is one point back with 49.
For Lethbridge to make the playoffs, the Hurricanes would need to take care of business and get plenty of help on the out of town scoreboard.
Anholt says Lethbridge is just focusing on what they can do each and every night.
“The odds are heavily stacked against us. That’s on us for putting us in the spot that we have. Specifically myself, a lot of the season falls on my shoulders big time. All we can do is control what we can control. Today we control getting better in practice and having a fun, energetic practice. Friday, all we can do is go out and try to play one game and try to get two points and that’s all we can do.”
Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. Alberta time in Regina on Friday.
