COBY WALDREN
Passed away, at the age of 94, Coby, (Jacoba) Elizabeth Waldren, nee Van Bronswyck, a beloved mother, grandmother (Oma) and great- grandmother. Coby was born on Feb. 10, 1920, in Vlissingen, Holland, to a merchant marine, Jacobus van Bronswyck and his wife, Lies (Beuker). She and her family, including her brother Leo and sister Marie, moved to The Hague a few years later. By the late 1930¹s, Coby had taken the trade of a hairdresser. During World War II, Coby had to work on farms to provide food for the family. After the Liberation in 1945, she met Canadian Army Private Homer “Wally” Waldren whom she married when she moved to Lethbridge in 1948. They had a son (Robert) a year later and a daughter (Deborah) in 1955. By 1956, she opened the well-known “Coby¹s Beauty Shop” on 13 St. N. She added a beauty school, a children¹s and a women¹s clothing shop to the business. She also owned stores in other locations, such as a beauty school on 7th St. S., and the “Cinderella Children¹s Clothing Store” on 3rd Ave. S. Coby also bought and sold many houses in town, turning them into successful rental properties. Her husband Wally predeceased her in 1970. After her retirement in 1980, Coby travelled extensively. She took many cruises and enjoyed long stays in Hawaii and Holland. She and her friends Finn Miller and George Vickers (and their dogs) drove through the Southwest U.S. in the early 1980s. She settled down to spend winters at the Sky Valley Park, in Desert Hot Springs, California, from 1986-2011, a true snow bird. In her last few years, she enjoyed playing bridge and crib at the local seniors¹ centres, and the Casino. She resided comfortably at St. Therese Villa. She died in her sleep on December 24, 2014. She had a long life well-lived, working hard, and always enjoyed her freedom and friends. Coby was tough and independent, but generous and hospitable in spirit, always supportive of those around her.
She is survived by her son Robert Waldren, her daughter Debra Leinweber (Phillip), her three grandchildren Maya, Allan and Bryan (Leah) and two great-grandchildren Lily and Jude. A Funeral Mass will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 10th at Assumption Roman Catholic Church, Lethbridge. DORCHAK HEATHER ARDELLE
August 12, 1991 - January 5, 2015
³In our lives for too brief a time in our hearts forever²
Daughter, sister, beautiful human being.
Heather is the beloved daughter of Joel and Gwen and sister to Holly (Kelton) Coates and Curtis. Heather will be sadly missed by her grandmothers; LaBelle Dixon and Vicki Dorchak, by her large extended family and many friends. Heather was predeceased by her grandfathers Stewart Dorchak and Hiram Dixon, and by her aunt Lynne Dorchak. Heather was a fifth generation ³Enchant Dorchak². She attended Enchant School to grade 8, graduated from Vauxhall High School in 2009 and received a diploma from the Lethbridge College Special Needs Educational Assistant program in 2013. A diagnosis of medulloblastoma at the age of eight changed Heather¹s life but did not define it rather than dwell on the limitations that childhood cancer imposed, Heather focused on living and enjoying life on the family farm. Education was important to Heather – with a strong work ethic and determination she achieved her goals. Heather was passionate about books, her cats and dogs. All who were privileged enough to know Heather appreciated her quick wit, positive attitude and calm demeanor. Heather¹s family is thankful to each and every person who touched her life. A Funeral Service will be held at the ENCHANT COMMUNITY HALL on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Jakob Pillibeit officiating.
Reception to follow. In remembrance of Heather, donations may be made to a charity of your choice, or simply share the joy of reading with a child.

Dr. MARIE SMALLFACE MARULE (Isstoikamo¹saakii: Winter Thief Woman) passed away in Lethbridge, Alberta on December 31st, 2014 at the age of 70 years. A woman who spent her life building communities of cultural knowledge: Marie Smallface-Marule of the Blood Reserve. Education had long been important to Marie Smallface-Marule, a member of the Blood Nation of the Blackfoot Confederacy. She saw it as an integral part of community development. ³My father wanted me to fight for First Nations causes,² she said. ³He knew education was needed to do that effectively. I wanted to get a good education as a means to an end Š People have to inform and empower themselves to facilitate real community development.² Marie was one of the first First Nations women to gain a BA in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Alberta, where she completed her Masters¹ course work in Anthropology. She was one of the first First Nations women to travel to Africa with CUSO as a volunteer in Community Development and Adult Literacy in Zambia. It was as a result of these travels that she began her quest to work on human rights issues. Upon her return, she was the Executive Assistant to Grand Chief George Manuel, and was later the Executive Director of the National Indian Brotherhood, the forerunner of the Assembly of First Nations. Despite her success at school, Smallface-Marule recognized that education encouraging assimilation and indoctrination did not serve aboriginal students well. She worked on developing education that respected cultural heritage and included indigenous identity. Marie became president of Red Crow Community College, a tribal college on the Blood Reserve, in 1991. As president of RCCC, Smallface-Marule developed an institution designed to meet the needs of aboriginal students. ³It is important that our culture, traditions and knowledge as Kainai (Blackfoot people) be transferred to future generations through our own institutions,² she said. ³We need to make education more relevant to our community.² This philosophy led to the development of the Kainai Studies Program at RCCC. Marie helped spearhead the Niitsitapi Teacher Education program. The first group of First Nations teachers trained in Blackfoot Education curriculum (a degree granted jointly by RCCC and the University of Lethbridge) graduated in June 2006. ³We are linking First Nations knowledge and culture to other programs such as nursing, agriculture, and science,² Smallface-Marule said, ³to make it part of people¹s lives in more conscious and academic ways.² In addition to teaching at institutions such as the University of Lethbridge, for over a decade, she also served as chief administrator of the World Council of Indigenous Peoples. She was also founder and president of the First Nations Adult Higher Education Consortium (FNAHEC) and was vice-chair of the National Association of Indigenous Institutions of Higher Learning (NAIIHL). Her other activities include acting as Chair and Vice-Chair of the Blood Tribe Police Commission; Chair and Member of the Blood Tribe Elections Appeal Board; Chair and Vice-Chair of Indian News Media; Secretary of the Indian Association of Alberta; and Chief Administrator of the World Council of Indigenous Peoples. Over the years, Ms. Smallface-Marule has traveled extensively in Europe, Africa and South America to gain respect for indigenous voices around the world. For her work as an educator and advocate of human rights for Aboriginal people around the world, Smallface-Marule was presented with the 1995 National Aboriginal Achievement Award for education. She was also honoured with the Queen¹s Jubilee Medal for outstanding community and educational service. In 2005, Marie received the Centennial Medal of Alberta for her work in Education & Community Development. In 2006 the Athabasca University awarded Marie a Doctor of Letters for her achievements and in June 2010 Marie also received from the University of Calgary a Doctor of Law for her achievements. At the Red Crow Community College 25th Anniversary, she was given an upright headdress through a transfer ceremony conducted by members of the College¹s Elders Council. Most recently, in April 2014, she received the Esqoao Dorothy McDonald Leadership Award and the Circle of Honour. Marie leaves behind her three loving daughters, Tsuaki Marule, Debbie Minyard, and Refilwe Marule McLean, her former husband, Jacob Marule and their grandchildren, Kristen, Logan, London, Madyson, and Jack. Her sons-in-law Paul McLean, Christopher Hegg, and Dallas Ducharme. Her siblings Laura Gervais, and brother-in-law Floyd (Bob) Gervais, Charlie Smallface and wife Marge Fox Smallface, Geraldine Many Fingers, Georgette Fox. Nieces and nephews J.R. GERALD DOUGLAS ROBERTS,
husband of Deirdre Coma, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 4, 2015 at the age of 74.
Gerry was born August 2, 1940 in Edmonton to parents Anna and Edward Roberts. He was the fifth child of seven children and was raised in Edmonton. He married Sonja Johnson in 1962 and had daughter Kimberly in 1972. He worked for Alberta Government Telephones for 36 years in many different capacities, which also included a stint at the Alberta Legislature, until his retirement in 1993. While in Edmonton, he was instrumental in getting the Big Brother Program started and cherished his time as a Board Member for the Good Samaritan Society. When Sonja passed away in 1992, he met Deirdre, left the big city and moved to Fort Macleod in 1994. Here they ran Mackenzie House Bed and Breakfast together. Gerry took to small-town life like a duck to water. During his 22 years in Fort Macleod, he loved his daily walks near Union Cemetery which for many years were done with his dog Major. He enjoyed talking with people he met on these daily walks. He had his beloved Model T for many years. He had a love for golf, and was generous with his time mentoring several young people in this sport. He always looked forward to visits from his four grandchildren. He performed many acts of generosity in the community that he would rather only the recipients knew about rather than the general public. Whenever he saw a need, he filled it, especially if it involved young people. He always lent an informative ear to people who needed advice. He will be greatly missed by his wife Deirdre, daughter Kimberly (Dean), grandchildren Luke, James, Sonja and Julia. He is survived by four brothers, Ed, Bill, John and Jim and a sister, Joan. Gerry was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Sonja and his brother George. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday January 13, 2015 at CHRIST CHURCH ANGLICAN, 320 21st, Fort Macleod, AB with reverend Pilar Gateman officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

GILLETT
ROGER MALCOLM GILLETT, beloved husband of Florence Gillett, passed away surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at the age of 81 years after a long and wonderfully successful life.
Roger is survived by his wife Florence – together for 60 years, their five children, Michael (Andree), Bruce (Sharon), Donna (Don), Pam (Brian), Susan (Tim), ten grandchildren (Kadi, Alli, Quinn, Jennifer, Sarah, Jodi, Jessica, Jacob, Eve, PJ), and four great grandchildren (Cole, Dylan, Reid, Olivia).
Roger was born and raised in Lethbridge, Alberta. He worked as a carpenter, construction superintendent and eventually co-owned Gillett Construction with his brother Joe. Roger finished his career working with his son Bruce running RBG construction. Roger married Florrie in 1954 in Lethbridge and together they lived in Calgary, Medicine Hat, Prince George and back to Lethbridge in 1967 where they settled to finish raising their family. Roger was very proud of his family and took great joy in watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren grow. Roger had a very strong work ethic and was very generous with his time and property, both evident in the Whitefish cabin that he and Florrie built back in 1987. Nothing gave him more joy than to know his cabin and backyard pool were being enjoyed by his family and friendsŠ unless it was hitting an eagle or hole-in-one. Roger¹s third home was Henderson Lake Golf Course where he shared his passion for golf with everyone. He and Florrie enjoyed time together golfing in their retirement years. Roger nurtured a questionable sense of humor. He was forever repeating shaggy dog stories, and today we only have to repeat the punch line to generate a laugh. No party was complete without him getting everyone to play ³I see a bar? Over thar?² which would end up with party-goers laying on the floor. His smile, his generosity, his handy hands and his friendship will be missed. A Celebration of his life will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME – 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Glenda Wert Officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Children¹s Hospital – 1820 Richmond Road SW, Calgary, Alberta, T2T 5T7

MINTZ
RONALD HOWARD MINTZ, beloved husband of Sandra Mintz, of Lethbridge, Alberta, passed away following a hard-fought, ten-year battle with cancer, on Saturday, January 3rd, 2015, at 48 years of age.
Besides his loving wife, Ron is survived by his teenage sons, Brandon and Ethan Mintz, of Lethbridge, AB., his mother, Dorothy Mintz, of Edmonton, AB., and his siblings, Gary Mintz (Debbie Senner) of Edmonton, AB., and Dianne Arndt (Guy), of Powell River, BC. Ron was pre-deceased by his father, Edwin Mintz. Relatives and friends are invited to a Prayer Service, which will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME – 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB., on Friday, January 9, 2015 at 7:00 P.M. with Deacon Cliff Bogdan officiating. A Funeral Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 6:00 P.M. with Reverend Glenda Wert officiating. Reception to follow. Ron and Sandra wish to express immense gratitude and thanks to the Lethbridge physicians, and their teammates, who supported them so well, making a tremendous difference in their lives, namely- Dr. Brenda Ireland, Dr. Abdul Shukkoor, Dr. Dinesh Witharana, Dr. Patrick Oviatt, Dr. Abhijit Ghose, Dr. Xander VanderPoll, Dr. Wendy Takeda, and Dr. Brad Hagen, as well as BJ Milman-Fritz, and the staff of St. Michael’s Palliative Care Centre. You are each angels on earth, and we give thanks for you all. Ron was a born and raised Edmontonian, who fell in love with Lethbridge, where his in-laws lived. Ron enjoyed a career with Don Wheaton Chev Olds in Edmonton, at their flagship dealership, as a Red Seal, GrandMaster Automotive Mechanic. What he enjoyed even more, was restoring classic vehicles, and building his own race cars. He took tremendous pride and enjoyment in this work, and the prevalent “car scene” in Lethbridge was just one of the factors that drove him to insist on a family move to Lethbridge in 2008. Ron wholly embraced fatherhood, and his sons were a tremendous source of love, pride, joy and focus in his life. He adored his sons from the minute they were born, and was very grateful for the time that he was able to have with them, shaping, nurturing, guiding, and loving them. He would have liked many more years with them, but was relieved and grateful for each extra year that he was given, thanks to his excellent medical care. Ron felt that if one didn’t do a great job in parenting their children, then no other life accomplishments much mattered. Ron was much loved by his family and friends. He was universally considered to be a really great guy; the kind of person who was liked and respected by all who knew him. Ron was honourable, kind, fun to be around, and had a gentle disposition. Ron¹s sweetness and pureness of heart and spirit makes his tragic loss especially difficult to bear. He will be honoured, loved and remembered in perpetuity. In memory of Ron, donations may be made to Kidney Cancer Canada – 4936 Yonge Street, Suite 226, Toronto, ON M2N 6S3, an invaluable source of support to Ron and Sandra. ROBERT WALLACE TRAIN
(March 15, 1936-January 6, 2015)
“If more people would hug instead of push away, there would be less trouble in the world” (Bob Train).
The legacy of “Grampy” Bob Train lives on in the strong thread of love he has woven throughout the lives he has touched. He gave of himself in all areas of his life and instilled in his family a love for one another and the direction to “serve your community and those around you”. Southern Alberta was such a big part of Bob, he travelled all over throughout his trucking career and made friends wherever he went. He believed strongly in giving to your community and believed strongly in the people of Fort Macleod. Bob worked at Vanee Livestock for 38 years and was more than just a truck driver, he was family. He loved trucking, loved driving and loved the people he met along the way. Bob was also a very active member of the Fort Macleod Lions club for many years. If you ever ate the mouthwatering roast beef cooked by the Lion’s Club, it was likely Bob had a hand in it.
