ALYRE THERRIAULT
Alyre Antoine Therriault passed away peacefully in Pincher Creek on Wednesday February 11th, 2015 at the age of 94. Alyre was the second child of homesteaders Denis and Agnes Therriault. He was born on May 10th, 1920 on the family farm in the Robert Kerr District in the MD of Pincher Creek. Alyre attended boarding school at the Kermaria Convent for Grades 1 and 2 and then attended the one room Robert Kerr School for grades 3 till 9. Alyre and his brother Edwin went to school by horse and buggy during the summer months and by cutter during the winter. He boarded in town for grades 10 and 11 but returned to the family farm before completing Grade 12 as his father was in ill health. In 1937 Alyre purchased a John Deere Threshing machine, hiring a crew and contracted out for custom threshing. On October 18th 1954 he married Jacqueline Bechtel and they raised four children. Alyre began to raise a herd of Black Angus cattle that he was very proud of. Alyre was one of the original “Big Ten” – this was a group of 10 local ranchers that formed the Butcher Creek Grazing Association. Alyre also held a permit in Castle River Forest Reserve for over 60 years, and was also an original shareholder in Stoney Bar Grazing Association. Alyre was so proud to become a grandfather to nine wonderful grandchildren and a great grandfather to ten great-grandchildren. He loved family get togethers and playing Crib, Five Hundred and Shanghai Rummy with family and friends. He also had a love of music and dancing. Alyre was active in the community as a Trustee for St. Michaels RC School Division, a member of Western Stock Growers, United Grain Growers, Pincher Creek Lions, Pincher Creek Community Hall Board and the Pincher Creek Recreation Board. Alyre took great pride in his family – his heritage and his community. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Jacqueline; his daughter Marie (Jim) Cameron and children Scott, Michael, Jenny (Chris); daughter Audrey (Robert) Jackson and children Shari (Shaun), Robyn (Eric); daughter Jackie (Frank) Marsh and children Jerett (Kathryn), Nicole (Dylan), Kelsey (Adam) and son Tim (Jan) Therriault. He is also survived by one sister Jeannette Therriault of Fairbanks, Alaska and Sister-in-law Sally(Doug) Connelly. He was predeceased by his parents Denis and Agnes Therriault his brothers Edwin and Patrick and sisters Kathleen Poff and Agnes Fischbuch. DOELL
GARY DOELL, beloved husband of Rosa Doell, passed away at the St. Michael¹s Health Palliative Care on Friday, February 13, 2015 at the age of 67 years. He is the loving father of: Dawn Doell (Wally) of Calgary, Renay Doell of Calgary; grandfather of Kayla-Rae Doell; stepsons: Bill (Jodi) Brzostowski and baby Kingston of Calgary, Mike Hanson (Leanne) of Calgary, and Pat Hanson (Jenn) of Lethbridge. Gary is also survived by his mother Irene Doell, his sister Karen (Gerald) and his brothers Dwayne (Shirley) and Darrell.
He is predeceased by his father Isaac Peter Doell. Gary passed away peacefully following a brief illness.
He was dedicated to his career at Brinks Canada for 27 years. His favorite pastimes included sun tanning, listening to music, making homemade wine with Frank and of course, collecting old vehicles. Gary loved to travel with Rosa and spending time with his family and friends. A Celebration of Gary¹s life will be held for family and friends on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Branch #275 Forest Lawn Legion, 755-40 Street SE, Calgary. The family would like to thank Lethbridge Home Care and St. Michael¹s Palliative Care for their assistance during this difficult time. Narcisse Blood (Tatsikiistamik), of the Blood Reserve, passed away suddenly on Tuesday February 10, 2015 in Regina, Saskatchewan. In celebration of Narcisse¹s life, his legacy and memory will live on through his Wife Alvine. Narcisse was predeceased by; his parents Mary and Narcisse Blood Sr., his brothers Marvin Blood, Johnny Blood. His Mother In-law Shirley Mountain Horse, and brother in-law Michael Mountain Horse.His niece Nicole Red Crow.His paternal grandmother Rosie Pace, Grandfather Alfred Blood, his maternal grandparents Joe (Henry) and Clara Heavy Head and many aunts and uncles. Narcisse¹s formal education began at the age of 6 years old at the St. Mary¹s Residential School until the age of 17. He received his post secondary education at the University of Lethbridge and as a visiting student at the University of Alberta. His impressive work history began right after high school as Supervisor at St. Mary¹s Residential School. Liaison Officer Š Š Then his work began at the National level with the Assembly of First Nations, the World Council of Indigenous People with Marie Small Face-Marule and George Manual. Later choosing to work closer to home, Narcisse became the Treaty 7 Vice-President of the Indian Association of Alberta. He served as a member on the Blood Tribe Chief and Council for 10 and one half years. He was the former director of Kainai Studies at the Red Crow Community College where he is recognized as an Eminent Scholar and where he was presently employed as a researcher and instructor. His 19 years of research experience include traditional knowledge, cultural heritage and museums. With his interest in museums Narcisse had been a big influence in the development of the current Repatriation Act in the province of Alberta and this also resulted in his involvement from 1990 ­ 2014 with repatriation of many of the Blood Tribes ceremonial artifacts and ceremonial bundles from museums in Canada and the United States. He was also very involved in museum visits to the United Kingdom like the British Museum, London, Pitt Rivers in Oxford, Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Cambridge, and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter, England to do an inventory of the Blackfoot collection that are in storage in these museums. In visiting these places he was also a guest Lecturer at Pitt Rivers, University of Aberdeen in Scotland and Exeter, England. Over the past twenty-five years Narcisse, has earned the reputation of being a respected leader, a distinguished scholar, an innovative researcher, an experienced educator, a commanding orator, a humorous storyteller, and an award winning documentary filmographer. As an accomplished filmographer he makes films related to the Blackfoot culture and history, and the community¹s relations with museums. As a traditional elder engaged in Indigenous research he has had numerous academic publications and director of many films and directed the award winning film ³Round Up². Not only was Narcisse a Blackfoot scholar, philosopher, teacher, activist, ceremonialist, family man, and friend he was a very outstanding athlete. He played football, golf, and basketball, which took him to places like Ireland and numerous other places. Because of his outstanding athletic abilities he won the prestigious Tom Longboat Award which is awarded to young outstanding female and male provincial athletes ­ an award he was very humble about and not very many people knew he had won the award.
Narcisse was very involved in the traditional societies of his community. He was a member of the Iitskinaiksi (Sacred Horn Society) with his wife and his longtime friend Giles. Then he was the owner of a thunder pipe bundle (Ninaimskaiksi) with his wife, his son Myles, and daughter Michelle. He was really involved in the traditional Blackfoot ways, which is a testament to why his children and grandchildren have already taken on a significant responsibility to carry the Blackfoot culture forward to the next generation. Narcisse and his wife presented their children and grandchildren to the world the same way he presented the culture, his knowledge, resources, compassion with such pride and joy, love and respect. Narcisse led a very extraordinary full life to share all that he has done for his community and the global world. Narcisse comes from a very large extended family and relatives, which include the families of the Beebes, Bruised Heads, Crow Chiefs, Day Chiefs, Eagle Childs, Eagle Bears, English, Foxes, Heavy Heads, Heavy Runners, Heavy Shields, Kicking Woman, Knifes, Little Bears, Many Fingers, Merchants, Mills, Pace, and Yellow Owls. Because of a very large extended family, we apologize if any families were missed as this was not intentional. A Wake Service will be held at the Kainai High School, Blood Reserve on Tuesday, Feb. 17th from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at the Kainai High School, Blood Reserve on Wednesday, Feb.18th at 11:00 a.m. Interment in the Family Plot Farm Four Cemetery, Blood Reserve.

ROY LEONARD
1939 ~ 2015
With saddened hearts we announce the passing of Roy Leonard on February 12, 2015 at age of 75 years. Roy passed away at home, holding the hand of Marge, his loving wife of 52 years. Roy was born in Calgary on December 20, 1939, received schooling in Lethbridge, and later graduated from Pillsbury Military Academy in Owatonna, Minnesota. Roy loved life to the fullest. He will be remembered for his sense of humour, but even more so for his loyalty to his friends. He had great empathy for all. We would like to thank Dr. Strank , Dr. Shields, Dr. Smuts and the Palliative Team, Home Care, Lethbridge Family Services, Dr. Brigden and the staff of the Cancer Clinic for the wonderful care Roy received. Besides his loving wife, Marge, Roy is survived by his brother Bob (Kathy) Leonard of Lethbridge, sister Marilyn (Barry) Cole of Bend, Oregon, sisters-in-law Patricia (Slim) Wiebe of Calgary and Shirley (Irvin) Hinds of High River. Roy leaves nieces and nephews who were all a great source of happiness and pride to him, as well as many friends. Roy was predeceased by his parents Ralph and Mary, and brother-in-law Dave Richardson.

SLEMKO
STEVE SLEMKO, of Coaldale, beloved husband of Frances Slemko, passed away at the Coaldale Long Term Care Centre on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at the age of 97 years. Steve is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances; son Ken (Kathy), three daughters Mary Coles (Walter), Loretta Simmill (Kevin), Rosanna Stevens (Tom); grandchildren Ken Coles (Dana), Angela Hope (Nick), Mike Coles, Sarah and Kris Slemko, Steven Simmill (Kathy), Lisa Orton (Jeff), David Simmill (Brittany), Tom and James Funk; 9 great grandchildren; two brothers Pete (Diana) and Bill (Jean). Parents Sam and Pearl Slemko, siblings Anne, John and Mary predeceased him. Steve was born on September 13, 1917 in Coalhurst, AB but raised in Lethbridge until Grade 8 when his family moved to a farm in the Coaldale area. He really enjoyed life on the farm working and playing together as a family unit. He attended Garbutt Business College in Lethbridge and became a bookkeeper and stenographer. He enlisted in 1940 with the Southern Alberta Regiment and because of his training became the ³little Radar O¹Rielly² in a mobile armoured unit. He received his discharge in1946 and returned to Coaldale. He married Frances Wadden on June 30,1951, built a house on a farm in the Coaldale area and raised their four children. Steve farmed until 1971 when he became a county councillor for the County of Lethbridge. He and Frances developed many strong and lasting friendships within the county. Always steadfast in their faith, they joined the Sisters of St. Martha Association. Steve was secretary-treasurer of St.Joseph¹s School from 1969-1994. He loved being around all the children and had a pocket full of coins to hand out. In recognition of his contribution to the community and country, Steve received Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee medals. Steve and Frances travelled the world during their retirement years. His children and grandchildren always returned to the farm for holidays enjoying farm life, card playing and family games. Steve and Frances moved from the farm to a senior¹s residence in Lethbridge in 2012 after Steve experienced deficits from a stroke. He will be remembered with a smile and greatly missed by his family and friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Marvin Hull Torrie in 2001, by one great-grandson, Wayne Julien Torrie, and by six sisters, one brother and their spouses. Guinivere, the daughter of William and Irene (nee Smellie) Redd, was born and raised in Raymond. She attended Normal school in Calgary and taught in various Southern Alberta schools before obtaining her Bachelor degree in Education (majoring in Mathematics and Chemistry) from the University of Alberta in 1944. She was married in 1946 to Marvin Hull Torrie of Grassy Lake. They raised their family on the ranch in Grassy Lake, instilling in them a love of the Lord and of the land, the value of work, of doing their best, and an appreciation for their pioneer heritage. Guinivere grew enormous gardens, baked wonderful bread, made delicious puddings, cinnamon buns and chiliburgers. She was active in her community, being involved in the Women¹s Institute, the Grassy Lake Cemetery Society, and Grassy Lake Seniors. She was also the Village Secretary and school PTA president. She will be remembered for her many humorous readings and for her frequent and encouraging phone calls to friends and loved ones. She taught her family to love and appreciate poetry and great literature and music. She had an amazing memory, memorizing poetry and hundreds of scriptures. She had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and served faithfully in many church callings, including three full-time missions with her husband, Marvin. Her family was her greatest joy.
