Coby Iwaasa is pretty handy with a racquet.
His four consecutive national U18 junior singles titles, and his 2015 Sherman Greenfield award for the male athlete who best exemplifies personal excellence and sportsmanship both on and off the court, should provide sufficient proof of that.
Lethbridge’s Iwaasa recently returned from the Canadian Junior National Racquetball Championships, held in Valleyfield, Que. late last month, with two new gold medals.
He won his second gold in the U18 Doubles Division by teaming up with Nicholas Bousquet, his opponent whom he beat for the individual gold.
After proceeding to the finals with an unblemished 3-0 record, Iwaasa, the No. 1 junior player in Canada, defeated Bousquet, who is from Quebec, 15-9 and 15-8. Â
It was the final tournament of Iwaasa’s junior career, where he won 11 gold medals, nine in singles and two in doubles.
Iwaasa is scheduled to next compete at the Canadian Nationals in Burnaby, B.C. from May 17-23.
It will also be his final qualification to be part of the racquetball team for the 2015 Pan Am Games.
Alexis Iwaasa, Coby Iwaasa’s cousin, won the U16 Girls Singles in Quebec. She was undefeated in the entire individual tournament, and also earned silver in the U16-U18 girls doubles.
