The Lethbridge Y’s Men Miners ran their American Legion A baseball conference record to 5-1 with a trio of wins on the weekend.
“It’s always good to get a few wins in your pocket early in the season, expecially when you’re still trying things out,†said Miners coach Jared Ruff after his team swept a doubleheader from the Medicine Hat Knights on Sunday afternoon. “You never know when you’re going to need them down the road.â€
The Miners started the weekend with a Saturday marathon, playing two games in six and a half hours against Great Falls. They won the first game 20-15 before dropping the second 13-3.
They recovered to win twice over the Hat on Sunday, starting with a 6-5 victory that saw Kyle Bloor go six innings and give up five earned runs — all in the second inning. Ruff said that was fine, since he was great in the other five innings he pitched. Bloor wound up with five strikeouts before giving way to Jack Jensen for the save.
Ty Penner, Zach Goruk and Liam Leech each went 2-for-4 with Penner adding a run batted in and Goruk hitting two RBIs.
The Miners also won the second game, 12-6 nine players getting a hit. Bloor had three hits and an RBI, while Torrin Vaselenak had a pair of hits. Penner went four innings and allowed three earned runs and six hits while Vaselenak pitched the final three innings and didn’t surrender an earned run.
