Bulls sweep series — Lethbridge hosts Regina Tuesday

By Lethbridge Herald on July 20, 2015.

LETHBRIDGE HERALD
As the long, tough road that is the Western Major Baseball League season rolls on, it can’t be easy to stay focused.
The Lethbridge Bulls have had some up-and-down results over the past week, but in consecutive games Saturday and Sunday at Spitz Stadium, they showed fans that there’s no give-up in their giddy-up.
The Bulls could have folded tents on Saturday and Sunday against the Yorkton Cardinals. A pair of games against a non-division opponent at the tail end of a long road trip wouldn’t have hurt the league-leading Bulls in the standings and it certainly would not have tarnished an already impressive season.
On Saturday, the Bulls denied the Cardinals in the 11th inning when Taylor Hutchison hit home Mitch Dornblut in an inning which also featured catcher Jacob Caples getting pinch-hit for by Cody Stewart, the usual starting centrefielder. The Bulls were up 9-1 at one point Saturday but the pesky Cardinals kept swinging away at the lead.
Dornblut had four hits in the game and Caples hit his second home run of the season.
The 29-10 Bulls don’t need to tax their bullpen and pitching staff for what could ultimately be a meaningless game. But they did.
Then on Sunday, after pitching two and two-thirds innings the night before, local product Chris Stodolka got the final out with the bases loaded for a 4-3 Bulls win over the Cardinals.
Stodolka relieved closer Jake Hansen of Fort Macleod after he gave up a run to bring Yorkton too close. It was Stodolka’s fifth save. He’s also got four wins in relief.
Clark Grisbrook started on Sunday, going eight innings and giving up two runs, one of them earned. Brandon Bufton hit his 16th double of the season, going 2-for-4 and lifting his average to .371. Yorkton didn’t score until they put up two in the eighth inning.
The weekend wins came after a 2-3 stretch for the Bulls, who are home against Regina on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
