In stark contrast to Tuesday’s game between the teams, defence and pitching were showcased Wednesday at Spitz Stadium.
At least for the first five innings.
Then Regina scored six runs — three of them off Bulls’ wild pitches and two off overthrows to first — in the top of the sixth, and the game blew open.
Lethbridge ultimately prevailed 9-8 over the Red Sox. In doing so, the Bulls became the first WMBL team to post 30 wins on the season.
The Bulls scored four in the sixth, four more in the seventh, and one more in the bottom of the ninth when an Evan Comeau single drove home Ryan Pidhaichuk to secure the victory.
Cody Stewart was 3-4 with three singles, while Mitch Grisbrook had two doubles and three RBIs.
After the scorekeepers apparently the took the first five innings off, Bulls starting pitcher Tyler Gibson loaded the bases in the top of the sixth.
He then threw two wild pitches — each leading to a run scored — to Regina’s Bryson Shelton.
Gibson also walked Shelton, and was promptly replaced by Matthew Beaton, who allowed an RBI single by Tanner Stokey.
Beaton threw another wild pitch, which led to another run. Regina went up 6-0.
The Red Sox lead didn’t last long, however.
Comeau and Stewart had back to back singles in the bottom of the sixth. Comeau scored on a Brandon Bufton double, and Stewart scored on Mitch Dornblut’s infield hit.
Bufton and Dornblut scored on a double by Grisbrook, which brought Lethbridge within two runs.
A Bretton Gouthro odd bunt-turned-infield hit started the seventh inning rally. He advanced to second on a passed ball, then to third on another Comeau single and scored on another Stewart single, to make it 6-5.
Lethbridge tied it 6-6 on a sacrifice fly by Bufton. Then a Trace Hansen bunt put him on base and loaded the bases with no outs.
Grisbrook drove two runs in on an infield hit and throwing error.
Regina, now 19-21 on the season, scored two in the top of the ninth.
Lethbridge will now embark on a four-game Saskatchewan road trip, with games in Weyburn tonight and Friday night, then in Moose Jaw on Saturday and Sunday.
After a game in Medicine Hat on Tuesday, the Bulls will return home a week from today to host Okotoks.
