KERN, WILLIAM

William Kern died on Nov. 25 in St. John, New Brunswick. Bill was born in Springfield, MA, on June 22, 1943, son to Katherine and Otto Kern. Soon after high school he became a Canadian citizen and married Iris Berezniuk in October, 1961. They raised three children in Alberta, where Bill began a lifetime of wilderness hiking. He also became the classic sales rep, selling pharmaceuticals, eyeglasses, and more all across Canada,

After he and Iris divorced in 1996, Bill bounced between Alberta and the eastern provinces, living simply and walking many kilometers a day. He was always an active volunteer – preservation of rattlesnake habitat in Alberta, a portside visitor center in Miramichi, NB, and, after bypass surgery, in support groups for people undergoing major medical treatment. He continued this work long after he was diagnosed with ALS four years ago.

In his last weeks he could walk and care for himself only with difficulty, but he escaped the worst final stages of ALS with a fall and a fatal brain injury. Bill was pre-deceased by his son Reid, and he leaves his two other children, Andrea and Rian; his former wife Iris; and his brothers Otto in Hampden, MA, and Phil in Wilder, VT.

John Wayne Landry

Born In: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Born: April 14th, 1973

Passed in: Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Passed on: November 28th, 2015

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our son, brother, uncle, nephew and cousin, John Wayne Landry on Nov. 28, 2015.

John Wayne was born in Halifax on April 14, 1973 to parents, John Landry and Carolyn Stone; he was the grandson of the late Charlie and Eva Stone of St. Peter’s and the late Joseph and Mary Landry of Halifax.

John graduated from Riverview High in 1992. He was an avid music fan and enjoyed all genres of music. He was also a great fan of sports and was always on top of the latest sports news. His family and friends were very important to him and he always made the effort to keep in touch with his loved ones from his home in Alberta. Although he made Calgary his home, Cape Breton was very near and dear to his heart.

Besides his parents and step-mother Lisa Dyck, John is also survived by his brother, Aaron Landry and his sister, Carrie Anne Landry; his dear nieces, Breanna, Alberta, Beth, Emma and Eden Steele of Port Morien, many aunts, uncles and cousins. John will be sadly missed by his second family at the Trap and Gill in Calgary, where he worked.

His many friends are too numerous to mention, as he touched the heart of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His pure and beautiful soul has left a mark on us all and the world is a brighter place for his being a part of it. He always had a kind word and smile for everyone and treated all with dignity and respect. He was a true gentleman, a great man, and in the words of the late Ron Hynes, “a man of a thousand songs.”

Arrangements are being made by Martin Brothers in Lethbridge, Alta. and a Celebration of his Life will be held at a later date in Cape Breton.
