Another sailor has set sail for his next adventure. In the theme of his beloved boat Voyager 2 (and yes there is no small reference to his TV series Star Trek).

This journey is called Voyager 3. It was with great courage as with everything he did, that he made this leap into this most recent voyage. The last time I saw him I reminded him of the amazing ventures he has been on sailing from the Caribbean through the Panama Canal up to Vancouver. He then outfitted his sailboat and began his journey from Vancouver, to Mexico, across the South Pacific to New Zealand and then on to Australia by himself. He then bought Voyager 2 in Germany and sailed to the Mediterranean. He found Alayna Marina in Turkey where he enjoyed a rich social life playing tennis and enjoying the experience that is Turkey. He was most at home at the marinas that he has visited all over the world. He will be missed by all of his sailing companions and friends. He was a cross between McIver and Indiana Jones and we will all miss his stories and adventures. He was most happy on his boat with a beer in his hand looking into the horizon. He was basically a shy quiet man with a lovely slow smile that warms your heart. The sea called to him and he spent the last quarter century sailing the blue waters of the oceans, which was interesting for a man raised in southern Alberta on a farm. Doug loved the tropics and liked to be warm.

Not only was he an adventurer in spirit he shared himself with all those who loved him. He leaves behind his two children Michael and Karen, as well as his brother’s Jim and Dale, his sister Gail and his friend Irene.

It is impossible to sum up the totality of a life in a few words but he was a man that lived on his own terms, a sailor, a father, a husband, and friend. We who are left behind will look forward to joining him in the future to share with him his next adventure: Voyager 3.

DORIS (OLER) FLETCHER passed away peacefully, Friday, February 19, 2016 at the age of 91.

Doris was born September 23, 1924, and raised in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan with her 4 siblings. Her Parents were John and Mable Moscrip. She leaves behind her children Ty (Debbie) Oler, Charlotte (Rodney) Luchansky, Blair (Cathy) Oler, Dwight (Wanda) Oler. As well as her 8 step children; Reta Peterson, Colleen Pilling, Carmon Greep, Darlene Twa, Linda Fletcher, Shirley Blogorodow, Sylvia Orstien, and Bonnie Fletcher. And her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her son Terry Oler, grandson Ryan Luchansky and step son Dalmon Oler.

Doris had many hobbies which included piano, sewing, knitting, crocheting, Barbie dolls and painting. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and faithfully served in many callings. Doris was a wonderful example of Christ-like service and love, and was always finding ways to help someone. Doris will be sadly missed by all her friends and family, but they will take solace in that she is having a wonderful reunion with those who have gone before. The family wishes to express special thanks to Debbie for the way she was always there for Mom seeing to her needs, and to Shirley, Kelsey and Colleen for their special kindness towards her.

FORSYTH

GARTH DEAN FORSYTH age 88, beloved husband of Jean, rode off at sunrise February 18, 2016. “See ya later, Alligator. Don’t get your hum gum twisted over your huzzy guzzy!” He was born to Neil Snow and Chloe Roseltha (Hatch) Forsyth early in the morning of December 5, 1927 in Cardston, Alberta, Canada—just prior to a record-making blizzard. He stood 6’2”, with dark hair and intense blue eyes that could see into your soul. He met Elna Jean Campbell, daughter of William David and Elna (Bohne) Campbell, while both worked at the Rothe ranch. They married October 14, 1948 in Hillspring, Alberta, Canada. In 1951, on the ninth of January (Garth’s mother’s birthday) they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Cardston Alberta Temple. Every spring he sought the first crocuses, buttercups, and shooting stars, and brought them to Jean— usually before anyone else knew they were blooming. They purchased a home in the Kimball Valley in 1958 and raised cattle, hogs, sheep, chickens, an occasional goat, goose or turkey, and 11 children. Few could nurse a sick animal or comfort a child quite as tenderly as Garth – he felt reverence for every life.

He was apprenticed as a saddle maker as a boy, and at 12 bought his first horse (he would rather catch a horse than walk a block). He then got a job herding milk cows for the town of Cardston. Garth’s preferred occupation was cowboy; his children and grandchildren enjoyed riding, fixing fences, trapping gophers and learning to love nature alongside him. For many years he managed the Ross Lake Community Pasture from May through October. Other vocations supplementing this included: truck driver, sheep shearer, senior care assistant, retail clerk, carpenter and general contractor. He was an all-around handyman. If it was broken, he could fix it. A highlight of his life was assisting with renovations of the Cardston Alberta Temple. Though he built many bridges, houses, barns and quonsets, his real accomplishment was building a life of love, friendship and service. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as Branch President of the Blood Branch, a missionary with Jean in the Los Angeles Family History Centre, an ordinance worker in the temple, and in many other capacities through the years. He enjoyed learning every day and was a powerful example of faith, fortitude, service, and good cheer. He began to ski at age 50, joined Facebook at 80 and became proficient with Skype at 85! Garth is survived by 10 children, Rex (Betty Lou); Gene (Debbie Lyle); Randy (Kathy); Tim (Karyn); Linda (David) Ames; Shane (Sharon); Necia (Richard) Kittler; Scott (Teri); Becky (Kevin Penner); and Bonnie (Darcy) Erickson; his foster son Wilfred (Charlotte) Marks Sr.; 52 grandchildren, 125 great- grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. He is also survived by 2 brothers: Mylo (Matilda) and Bryce (June); and his only sister Ruth (Robert-deceased)) Horne. He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: Rex (Chic), Scott (Gladys), Ken (June), and Duane (Verna) Forsyth; two granddaughters: Tausha and Marie; and one great-grandson: Clayton.

The family expresses appreciation to all those whose kind words, visits, sincere regards, and reminiscing, cheered and lifted him recently – “the folks that call [him] friend.” We also express gratitude to Dr. Playfair, Dr. Tailfeathers, and other doctors, nurses and staff at the Cardston Hospital; staff at the Chinook Lodge; and other nursing staff and volunteers for their special concern and compassionate care.

Family will greet friends at the Legacy Funeral Home, on Friday, February 26th from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. or at the church from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.

Mrs. Dorothy Gedrasik of Stirling, beloved wife of the late Mr. John Gedrasik, passed away at Raymond Health Centre on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at the age of 77 years.

Janice McCubbin of Calgary passed away peacefully on Monday, February 22, 2016, at the Agape Hospice with her family by her side.

Janice was raised in Lethbridge by a loving family. From an early age she was drawn to music. Playing piano and teaching music was to become a lifelong passion for Janice. She moved to Calgary in 1958 to raise her family and continue her career in music. She earned degrees in music from the University of Western Ontario, and the University of Calgary. In 1996 she married Alec McCubbin, and moved to Whiterock, BC, where she enjoyed the happiest time of her life. She is already greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Janice is survived by her two sons Paul Milevic and Kim Milevic (Margie Klassen) and grandchildren Alexander and Katherine Milevic.

She was predeceased by parents Theodore and Pearl Thoreson, brother Robert, and husband Alec McCubbin.

OLSEN

JUNE LEAVITT OLSEN passed peacefully from this world on Saturday February 20, 2016 at the age of 89 years.

June was born on May 31, 1926 in Cardston, Alberta to Matthew Leavitt and Ella Broadbent Leavitt. She was raised in Leavitt Alberta with a beautiful view of the Rocky Mountains which she loved. On December 20, 1944 she married Ned James Olsen of Beazer in the Cardston Alberta Temple. June worked along side of her sweetheart on their farm outside of Cardston while being employed for 25 years in the Cardston Post Office. June spent her life in the service of others. She especially enjoyed sharing her gift of music as she played the piano for many appreciative people young and old in the community and church. June faithfully served in the LDS church throughout her life.

June is survived by her children Eric (Cheryl), LaRae (Murray) McKinnon, Merv (Melanie Leavitt), Thaine (Terry), Roy (Connie), Diana (Ed) Mackenzie; 23 Grandchildren and 39 Great Grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Ned, a son Marvin in infancy, daughter in-law Kathy Olsen, grandson Ryan Leavitt, great granddaughter Katherine Robertson.

Friends may meet the family at LEGACY FUNERAL HOME on Thursday, February 25th from 7-8 pm or at the church on Friday, February 26th from 10-10:45 am prior to the service.

MR. DARRELL LEON PASSEY, beloved companion of Patricia, passed away in Magrath on February 22, 2016 at the age of 81 years. According to Darrell’s wishes, no funeral service will be held.

GLORIA RED CROW (NEE SCOUT) was born on November 30th, 1943 at the Blood Indian Hospital on the Blood Reserve. Her Blackfoot name is “POKO’TAN” (Small Daughter). She passed into the Spirit World on February 19th, 2016 in Lethbridge, Alberta. Gloria is survived by her loving husband Alex (Jack) Red Crow. Her children Floyd (Maxine) Big Head, Leonard Big Head, Ivy Annie Big Head, Ramona Big Head, Emile (Noreen) Big Head, Bonnie Big Head, Jennifer (Terry) Ivins, Robbie (Roland) Rabbit, Carmelita (Mervin) Rabbit, Megan (TJ) Heavy Shields, and Alex Batoche. Her sister Elizabeth Big Head and her brothers, Oliver (Frankie) Scout and Glen Yellow Feet. Her aunt Cecile Spear Chief. Her God Children, Stanley Big Sorrel Horse, Marcus Vielle, Matthew Panther Bone & Heather Wolf Child. She was a matriarch of a very large family consisting of 23 Grandchildren and 41 Great Grandchildren.

“Glor”, as she is affectionately known by her family, was a devout Catholic and she loved to make rosaries which she would donate to the community. She also loved to cook berry soup and fry bread every summer in support of her children and grandchildren at the sacred Sundance ceremonies. She was a mother to many of her extended family and friends.

She fully supported her family and would make sure to attend graduations, baby showers, weddings and birthday parties. Glor was a homemaker and would spend her afternoons watching her favorite VHS movies such as The Golden Girls, Three’s Company, Sanford & Son and Columbo. Glor’s unique sense of humour, genuine kindness, grassroots humbleness and her quick wit will be missed by all who love her.

Gloria was predeceased by her parents, Ivy Spear Chief and George Scout. Her siblings, Beatrice (Gilbert) Big Sorrel Horse, Julia Striped Wolf, Warner Scout, David Yellow Feet, Irvin Yellow Feet, Iris Knife, Wayne Yellow Feet, Gerald and Eric Cold Weather; and her grandchildren, Galena Brave Rock and Jovian Big Head.
