ALTIERI, Antonietta (nee Valerio)

Antonietta passed away peacefully early Thursday morning at the Brentwood Extended Care Centre, at the age of 91 years.

She aged with grace and dignity. A powerfully courageous, bright and kind woman, who exemplified what it means to be human. “No” never escaped from her lips. Morally and ethically she always knew what to do; not because she had to, but because it was right. Antonietta was loved by many.

At 29, she, along with two very young daughters, sailed from Naples to Halifax, then travelled west to reunite with her husband. Before moving to Calgary, she lived in Cowley and Lethbridge.

Her raison d’etre was her unwavering love for her family, often displayed in the form of food. Antonietta was most happy when she was having people over, for whom she could cook. By friends and family, we were often reminded of her exemplary culinary skills. She was a master chef and baker; a sous chef only to our father when they made cheese, sausages, wine and while nurturing the most amazing garden.

She initially taught herself English by reading cookbooks and later watching cooking shows. Growing up, we were regularly the recipients of her sartorial skills. Every event, including the first and last day of school, we had new outfits, either self-designed or copied from a catalogue. At a time when it was uncommon for women to work outside of the home, especially Italian women, Antonietta hoed sugar beets, worked at Broader’s Canning Factory before becoming the cook at the Devon Nursing Home in Lethbridge. For a period, she belonged to the Catholic Women’s League.

Loving remembered and forever in our hearts, Antonietta is survived by her daughters, Costanza Altieri of Vancouver, and Flora Altieri (Tony Bromhead) of Calgary; granddaughter Ramona Lisell of Red Deer; sister-in-law Antonietta Evangelista; and numerous nieces and nephews in Calgary, Italy, Switzerland, Argentina, and Brazil. She was predeceased by her husband Antimo in October of 2006; and her sister Cecilia Di Marra of Italy.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (640 – 19th Avenue N.W.) on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 8:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (640 – 19th Avenue N.W.) on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Violet Fusae Horii at St. Michael’s Health Centre on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at the age of 97 years.
