SILAS BENJAMIN MOSES GINN

July 27th, 1973 – August 31, 2018

Born in Toronto and lived in Vancouver, Grande Prairie, Ft. McMurray, Calgary and Lethbridge.

It is with the deepest of sorrow that we share the passing of Silas, beloved son of Elizabeth M. Ginn and brother to Muffy McKay and uncle to nephews Auren McKay and Benjamin McKay. Silas also leaves his sister Amanda Perillo and her family in Seattle, WA, and many relatives in Ontario. He also leaves his step-daughter Ever Mee in B.C.

His death has left us all in shock and happened very quickly due to complications from illness. Silas was looking forward to the future and talked about travelling with his Mom this month back to Fogo Island, Nfld and Labrador.

Always a friend to those in need, including his beloved dog Charlie and family dogs over the years; his beloved cat Kermode and others in the rescue of the Last Chance Cat Ranch, Silas was always there to help animals in need. From a very young age, he rescued reptiles, fish, rabbits and spiders. A passionate Vegan for the majority of his life, he saw no purpose in treating all creatures, including flies, without respect for their lives. He loved gardening and caring for his many houseplants. Animal companions aside, he was a friend to many. Silas was a compassionate, giving and caring guy.

He was also passionate about motorcycles and was working on rebuilding some. He belonged to a Motorcycle Forum that had members all over the world. Condolences are coming in from South Africa, Great Britain, Europe and all-over North America. He had an incredible gift for writing and had been encouraged to write and publish by many, including former teachers in high school and college.

Silas suffered from a debilitating back injury for the past 20 years and yet was always there to help those in need. He was grateful for what he had and supported his mother in her endeavors as an artist and writer. A gifted mind, a stable and passionate love for the earth, Silas distained the acquisition of material wealth in absence of concern for the vulnerable. He leaves a next to zero carbon footprint as he was a fanatic recycler, but he does leave a large footprint on the hearts of many.

Silas did not want a funeral per se. He opted for a green ending with his ashes to become the strength for the growth of a tree. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date for family and friends.

NOGAMINE

It is with great sadness that the family of Reiko Nogamine announce her passing on Friday, August 31, 2018 at the age of 83 years with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of Shigeru Nogamine of Lethbridge, loving mother of Mary (Ken Nishi) of Calgary and Bachan to Jordan, Carly and Kevin Nishi. She is also survived by her brothers Shinobu (Tamiko) of Osaka, Japan; Tom (Setsuko) of Lethbridge and Tsukasa (Chiyoko) of Miyazaki, Japan and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Jim, parents Yukichi and Fumi, brother Isamu and sister Kyoko.

Reiko was born on April 1, 1935 in Kagoshima, Japan. She and Shigeru with Jim and Mary immigrated to the Vauxhall area in September, 1967 as part of the first group of Japanese to be allowed to immigrate to Canada, post-war. This group formed their extended “Canadian family” and in 2017, they celebrated their 50th anniversary of being in Canada with their children and grandchildren. They lived and worked in the Vauxhall and Taber area from 1967 – 1976 after which they bought their own farm west of Burdett. They farmed from 1976 to 2007. She also worked outside the farm at Shimbashi’s and Lamb Weston potato facilities where she made many friends – celebrating their birthdays with gifts of home made sushi, pickles and desserts.

She was an avid gardener throughout her life – toiling for hours to produce bountiful amounts of vegetables which she generously shared with her family, friends and neighbours. She was also known for the many kinds of Japanese pickles – tsukemono which she also shared with family and friends.

After retirement, they moved to Lethbridge, where the back yard did not provide enough room to grow all the produce she wanted to grow, so they rented a community garden plot to continue to produce enough vegetables to share. She was a hard working, caring and generous person, always thinking of others before herself and always calling to see how the grandkids were doing in school and whether they got home safely from their many school and sporting events and their commutes to university. She always had delicious Japanese meals ready to eat whenever the grandkids would visit with extra home made munju and sushi to take home with them.

Friends may meet with the family on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at CHRISTENSEN SALMON GENERATIONS FUNERAL HOME, 703 – 13 Street North, Lethbridge.

The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Christensen Salmon GENERATIONS Funeral Home, 703 – 13 Street North, Lethbridge. Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery, Lethbridge at 2 p.m.

We wish to extend our sincere gratitude and thanks to the entire nursing staff and Palliative Care Doctors at the Chinook Regional Hospital and St. Michael’s Health Centre Palliative Care Unit for the all the comfort and care they provided to her.

At an early age, Eddy was stricken with polio. His right leg and torso were in a full plaster cast. He was unable to participate in any childhood activities. A doctor suggested to Eddy’s mother that riding horses would be good therapy for him, so Roanie was purchased for twenty dollars by his mother, who also got him a job herding one hundred head of cows which were grazed on open prairie north of Taber. He was paid fifteen a month.
Eddy was a talented calf roper, artist, singer, historian, writer, speaker and he loved to dance. He had several articles published in various magazines and had an article written about him in Cornelson’s publication Antelope Trails (2007). In 1965 Eddy married Patricia Rombough and started raising registered quarter horses. He was the founding member of the Sugar Town Saddle Club, the Taber Roping Club, Taber Equestrian Club, Southern Alberta Roping and Riding Clubs, Chinook Rodeo Association and the Taber Exhibition Association. Eddy and Pat’s greatest accomplishment was receiving the Legacy award from the American Quarter Horse Association for fifty years of raising registered Quarter Horses.
Eddy had many friends and family who loved him dearly. If you wanted to know anything about the Taber area or horses he was the man to talk to. Eddy was a loving husband, brother and friend. He loved children. He always had time for coffee with family and friends at McDonald’s. Eddy always had time for his wife and her needs at the extended care. He was one of a kind. The world needs more good people like Eddy Sparks. He would probably say to everyone, “happy trails to you till we meet again”.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Eddy’s name may be made directly to STARS, 1441 Aviation Park NE, PO Box 570, Calgary, Alberta T2E 8M7 (http://www.stars.ca).
