Patricia Blanche Broadbent

1929 – 2019

Patricia Blanche Broadbent (née Sambell) Died January 18, 2019, Lethbridge, Alberta The most inspiring, supportive and encouraging person in our lives took her final breath at the age of 89 years. Patricia is survived by her husband Michael Broadbent, her daughter Jane (Greg) Senda and her grandchildren Mika Senda and Teio Senda, as well as brothers Bernard Sambell and Reginald Sambell, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Keith, parents Rose and Frank, brothers Leonard, Edward, Benjamin, John, Keith, Albert, and her sister Rosina. Patricia was born to Rose and Frank Sambell on June 2, 1929 in London, England. It was here where she started a long career as a seamstress. As a young apprentice she had the opportunity to participate in the hand stitching of Queen Elizabeth II’s wedding dress. Patricia’s husband Michael tells a story of how they met. He relates “I ‘stalked’ that beautiful girl on the bus”. Two years later they were wed. Patricia and Michael had 70 years of happily married life. In 1952, she and Michael brought their children Keith and Jane to Canada, to London and then to Windsor, Ontario Canada where she and Michael resided for 50 years. As well as being an expert seamstress, Patricia sold real estate and nurtured a spectacular garden. However, her main focus in life was her family and raising, supporting and encouraging her children and grandchildren. She was, more than anything, an elegant, spirited and strongly capable woman way ahead of her times. There is no funeral by request. If desired, memorial donations can be made to the charity of your choice.

Wanting to find a better life for their young family, they decided to immigrate to Canada in the winter of 1959. Josephine and Albert settled in Taber to raise their sons and remained there until retiring to Lethbridge. While Albert worked as a carpenter, Josephine ran the household and made sure that her boys were well fed and cared for until they moved away and had families of their own. Although she loved life in Canada, she missed home and was so happy when her relatives from the “Old Country” would call. Josephine loved to garden and always had the most impressive flower beds in the neighbourhood. The world seems a little less colorful now that she is gone. She has returned home but will never be forgotten.

He began his life on his mother and father’s homestead on the Piikanii reserve and attended Sacred Heart School. He did this until he met the love of his life (Theresa) and began his own farming operation in 1970 and did this until the early 2000’s. His family grew and so did his love for farming which he continued to build on by adding cattle and many other endeavours as well. He enjoyed farming and the cattle ranch; from seeding and cattle brandings in the spring, haying in the summertime, to taking off the crops in the fall, and the yearly round ups in the fall, and using his tractor to remove snow from the roadways and feed his cattle in the winter. He was well known in his younger years for enjoying fishing and hunting with his friends and family. He was always ready to help his community, friends, and family. He served as a member of the Piikanii Chief and Council (1982). As his son (the late Dan Pard) got older, they developed a strong team which was evident in their success in the horse racing industry, cattle ranching, and farming. He also worked along side his son (Troy) with mechanics and farming. He had a very close relationship with his daughter (Cathy) who worked with him in ranching. When he was not working on the farm, he would spend all his free time with family and friends but enjoyed family gatherings through the year where he would be with all his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

John Zalik
1961 – 2019

John Steve Zalik, beloved husband of Jeanette Leusink, passed away unexpectedly in Lethbridge on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at the age of 57 years.
The Service will be held at the Exhibition Park, North Pavilion, 3401 Parkside Drive South, Lethbridge on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at http://www.southlandfuneral.com.
Besides his loving wife Jeanette, John is survived by his son Scott Leusink (Jennifer Kehoe) of Lethbridge, his sister Sylvia Zalik of Coaldale and his mother Anne Zalik of Coaldale. He will also be fondly remembered by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, by Jeanette’s family and many close friends.
He was predeceased by his father Steve Zalik, his brother-in-law Henk Leusink and numerous relatives and friends.
John was born in Coaldale on May 7, 1961 to Steve and Anne Zalik. He got the ‘work bug’ early in life. His first job was at Agway Feeds. Then at the age of eighteen, John started his own business, JASS Transport, hauling grain feeds for Shurgain until 1989. John loved driving truck and in 1991, he was hired on with Lafarge in Lethbridge. That same year, he met the love of his life Jeanette and together they worked to create a loving
home to raise Scott. John worked hard his whole life but always took time to travel and explore new places, he especially loved Texas. John loved people, to him there were no strangers, only new people to get to know. John will be sadly missed by all.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in John’s name may be made directly to the charitable cause of one’s choosing.
The family would like to thank everyone for their ‘shower of love’ during this very sad time.
