PATRICK JOSEPH BREWER passed away at the Cardston Hospital on Monday, January 21, 2019 at the age of 80 years.
A Family Service will be held at Legacy Funeral Home, Cardston on Sunday, January 27, from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. followed by the Wake Service at the Gladstone Hall from 7:00 – 11:00 p.m.

CRAIG

After a week-long stay in hospital, JAMES ARTHUR “JIM” CRAIG lost his battle with cancer, flu and pneumonia on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at the age of 86 years.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 63 years, Lorelli, his sons, Scott and Mike, his grandchildren, Madison and Devun, his nephew, Lawrie and his niece, Tami of the United States, as well as numerous cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, Roy & Ruth Craig and his brother, Gordon.

James Arthur Craig was born on March 17, 1932 and lived on the family farm northwest of Barons. He attended the Barons School. On October 29, 1955, he married Lorelli and they farmed until 1963 before moving to Lethbridge. His big break came in 1967 when the University of Lethbridge accepted its first “mature” students. By 1970 the job market for teachers had dried up, causing him to abandon his dream; however, in the last week of August that year, he landed a job at Fleetwood-Bawden teaching the sixth grade, where he remained until his retirement in 1993. He had finished his degree in 1972, and he and Lorelli graduated together.

Retirement meant Jim could do all the things he enjoyed. He was a wonderful gardener and the backyard always looked like a pristine park. He was an avid reader of newspapers, fictions and biographies. He would start every day with a crossword puzzle and would end with a long walk or bike ride through Indian Battle Park – weather permitting. He played the piano and was known for his skills as a handyman. His tech support skills, on the other hand, were notorious for bringing out his “colourful” vocabulary. He cooked meals, baked bread and concocted delightful desserts.

The Craigs enjoyed having friends over, the symphony and University of Lethbridge productions. They also loved traveling, with New York and Italy topping the list of Jim’s favourite places.

We will miss Jim’s wit, his laid-back demeanor and his great ability to be a true friend. He embraced life and lived every day to the fullest.

By request, there will be no formal funeral service. Jim will be cremated and there will be a get-together at a later date.

Dr. Gerhard Driedger

MD, FRCPRSC, FACS

21 July 1925 – 23 Jan 2019

Born in Baaronhof in the Free City of Danzig, Gerhard was the second of three sons born to Walter and Helene Driedger.

In 1942 he enlisted in the German Army Medical Service. This enabled him to start his medical studies in 1943. While still a Prisoner of War in June 1945, he married Hilda Esau, his childhood sweetheart and wife for the next 72 years. The War over, he resumed his medical studies at the University of Kiel graduating in 1948. He interned at the Mennonite Central Committee hospital in Gronau and began a surgical residence in Coblenz.

In 1951, the family emigrated to Canada and settled in Lethbridge Alberta. After success in his Dominion Council Exams and working in General Practice for three years, he embarked on postgraduate Orthopaedics Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Returning to Lethbridge in 1960, he was made a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Canada. He became Chief of Surgery at the Municipal Hospital for 10 years, President of the Alberta Orthopaedics Society and founding president of the Lethbridge Surgical Society. He served as a medical missionary at the Lutheran Hospital in Yagaum, New Guinea in 1969-70. By 1988, he reduced his workload for health reasons and retired in 1995.

Always an avid history buff, he then wrote a history of his ancestoral homeland, “The Werder” (The Land of the Vistula River Delta).

The Driedger family were members of Christ Trinity Lutheran Church in Lethbridge since 1954. Gerhard served on the congregational council as well as the Evangelical Lutheran Church Council for many years.

Gerhard was predeceased by his wife, Hilda, in 2017, his parents in 1972 and 1985 and his brother, Walter, in 1944.

He is survived by children Walter (Takako), Renate Maria (John), Bernhard (Annette) and Peter (Linda (deceased), now Tatyana) as well as nine grand-children and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am at Christ Trinity Lutheran Church, 416 12 St S, Lethbridge, on 4 February, 2019. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the memorial fund of the church.

DUDLEY

Robert Earle “Bob” Dudley, beloved husband of the late Bessie (Orr) Dudley, passed away in Cardston, AB on Sunday, January 20th, 2019 at the age of 91. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 1st, 2019 at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints chapel located at 5927 Tipton Rd NW, Calgary, AB. Friends may meet the family at the Church from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the Service. Interment to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Calgary. Remembrances in his honour may be sent to the chapel the morning of the service.

KLOVANSKY
MIRK KLOVANSKY passed away on Friday January 25, 2019 in Raymond, Alberta at the age of 83 years.

Joe Kovach

1935 – 2019

Joe Kovach passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 18, 2019, at the age of 83 years. Our family is deeply saddened to inform you of the passing of our beloved uncle, but we know that Joe has lived a full, and happy life.

Joe was a devoted uncle, brother, and friend who was full of laughter and love and always the first one to help out anywhere that was needed. People who knew him, knew he was kind hearted, strong willed and a rock for family and friends. Joe lived his life to the fullest and family was very important to Joe. He could often be found surrounded by family and friends at Lethbridge Hurricanes games, having coffee, playing cards or involved in a game of cribbage. Joe’s zest for life touched everyone who knew him, and he will be missed dearly by all his friends and family.

Joe always enjoyed his morning coffee with friends at the Turin coffee shop and loved his days on the farm where he lived his entire life. He spent lots of time attending auction sales, and many of the surrounding community parades and events.

Joe was predeceased by his parents Joe and Mary Kovach, and his two brothers Frank and Paul. Joe was never married but always kept a close connection to his nieces and nephews, who will forever miss his laughter, visits and game playing on the holidays.

Sakae “Sak” Saruwatari

1928 – 2019

Sakae “Sak” Saruwatari, mechanic and farmer passed away on Wednesday January 23, 2019 at St. Therese Villa.

Dad was born January 5, 1928 on the family farm south of Raymond. Dad married May Nishiyama on February 19, 1955. Together they raised 5 children Richard (Wendy), Philip (Tammy), Joy (Darcy), Cary (Eileen), and Gaye (Kalvin). 12 grandchildren and soon to be 13 great- grandchildren.

Dad is survived by brother Tosh (Joyce), sisters Jeannie and Sady and sister in-law Mary. Predeceased by wife May, siblings Kashiko, Ritsuko, Toshiko, Takayuki, Mamoru, and Minoru.

SMITH

Chadwick Richard Smith was born July 3, 1974 and passed away peacefully in his home on January 22, 2019.

Chadwick is survived by his mother Cheryl Smith of Regina, SK, father Daryl Lennox (Wendy) of Fort Qu’Appelle, SK, his sister Crystal Smith (Sean Beardow) of New Westminster, BC and grandmother Lou Lennox of Fort Qu’Appelle, SK as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins and his extended family Tyler, Nicole, Tyson and Alexis Perkins of Lethbridge, SK and, of course, his beloved cat Rudi.

Chad is predeceased by his stepfather Ray Smith, brother Shane, his maternal grandparents Lee and Murial Halvorson, paternal grandfather John Lennox, his grandparents Raymond and Margret Smith, his uncles Earl Halvorson and Don Amberson, his aunt Marlene Virtue.

Chad was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and lived there until he moved to Lethbridge in 2004. A hard worker, Chad worked in various kitchens and manual labour positions for most of his life. Over the past 10 years, Chad has been a valued employee at Haul-All as a fabricator building different types of containers, including the wildlife-proof Hid-A-Bag that appears in parks across Canada. Chad’s work ethic was to be admired by many and he will truly be missed by the company and co-workers.

Chad loved animals of all kinds but none more than his partner in crime, Rudi the Cat. Anyone who knew Chad, knew of Rudi. Rudi will be moving in with Chad’s mother in Saskatchewan.

He also had a love of collecting coins and it was not uncommon for Chad to go through your change to make sure there was nothing special in the pile. He loved sports, especially his teams – the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Yankees, BC Lions and the Dallas Cowboys.

Chad was an avid pool player, often earning top spot in many tournaments. His pool league friends were like family to Chad and we know he will be deeply missed. Chad was a quiet man, but a kind and caring man and would give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need. If you needed a hand, he was often the first one to show up and the last one to leave. He will be missed by all that knew him.

STOUT

THOMPSON, RICHARD IVER

Passed away too soon on December 31, 2018 at his home in Langley BC at the age of 71.

Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Dad was humble about his U.S. military service in Vietnam, with the 704th Maintenance Battalion 4th infantry division, after which he continued his career as an aircraft maintenance engineer.

Besides being a great father, Dad was a husband, who dearly loved our Mom Garda, and didn’t want to do much without her by his side. He was the anchor of the family, a dedicated foster Dad for 25 years, and a proud Boppa. He was the oldest brother in the Thompson clan.

He was a big kid.

Dad was passionate about his Harley and the brotherhood of the legion riders.

He loved flying, fishing, horses, Mexico, “fixing” in his garage, camping in his motorhome, cooking (especially breakfast), harassing Mom, and all things shiny, just to name a few.

Dad was the salt of the earth, a man among men, he would go above and beyond for anyone in need. Brilliant, charming, he had a way with words, and would have done a much better job at writing this than us. Man, we will miss you!

There will be a combined American Legion Riders and Patriot Guard Ceremony potluck at the American Legion, Post 86, 4580 Legion Drive, Blaine, Washington on February 17, at 13:00 hours.

A celebration of life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, 324 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, Alberta on March the 09th from 13:00 to 17:00.

TOLLEY

MR. NORMAN DEWANE TOLLEY

February 9, 1932

– January 24, 2019

It is with deep sadness and a small measure of gentle relief we announce the passing of Norman Tolley at St. Michael’s Health Care Centre.

Besides his loving wife and companion, Dorothy Piekema, he is survived by her children; Cindy Dejager (Jason Thomas) and family, Roger Piekema (Jobina Antochow-Piekema) and family, his daughter; Kim Tolley and his brother; Elroy Tolley.

Norman was predeceased by his parents; Ralph and Vonda Tolley, sister; Judy Archibald and son; Mike Tolley.

Norman was a very competitive man who excelled at many sports especially bowling, golf and pool.

MORGAN ROBERT WIDDOP passed away January 17, 2019 in Raymond at the age of 27 years.

He is survived by his wife Ashley and three children; Bentley, Makayla and Bayne, his mother Linda (Corey Unrah) Delaney, his father Bill Widdop, brothers; Chris (Katrina) Delaney, Will (Sheila) Widdop and Dallas (Gaelyn) Widdop.
