FISHER

CLARENCE ALBERT FISHER, of Crowsnest Pass, AB, passed away peacefully February 4, 2019 at the age of 77 years.

Clarence was born in Sylvan Lake, Alberta on May 30, 1941. He spent his working years operating heavy equipment. In 1959, Clarence married Erma Wall and they had four daughters. It gave him joy giving his time to all who knew him.

Left to remember him are Erma, Cheryl (Doug) Steinky, Alanna (Kim) Cosman, Beverly Heppner and Dallas (Darren) Smaniotto as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

MILLER

DERALD EUGENE MILLER, beloved husband of the late Eleanor Rushfeldt Miller, passed away peacefully at the Good Samaritan Society-Garden Vista in Magrath, Alberta on Tuesday, January 29, 2019.

Derald is survived by his children: Janice (W. Jack) Stone, Robert (Margo) Miller, Cameron (Jana) Miller, Sharon (Michael) Ryan, and Kevin Miller, as well as 27 grandchildren, and 90 great grand-children. Derald is also survived by his brother-in-law Donald G. Walker. He was predeceased by his brothers A. Glen Miller, Martin Miller, Clifford Miller and K. Leron Miller; and his sisters Vera Head, Belva Miller, A. Laretta Orr, Myrtle Miller, Martha Miller, Thelma Miller and Dorothy Bennett.

Derald was born January 3, 1921 to Alma and Annie Bushman Miller, the eleventh in a family of 13 children. He was lovingly raised in a Magrath pioneer family and learned from an early age to work hard thinning sugar beets and planting and harvesting two large vegetable gardens. His life-long love of gardening continued through his 97th summer. As a young man he was a natural athlete and participated on many sports teams in Magrath with his older brother Glen as his coach. After high school he attended Calgary Normal School for a term and with the outbreak of World War II he trained and served as an outstanding flight instructor in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

In 1948 Derald met and married the love of his life, Irene Eleanor Rushfeldt, a beautiful nurse from Heinsburg, Alberta. They made their home in Raymond where they worked together to raise their growing family.

Derald’s life was devoted to his family, church and community. He prepared further for his teaching career by attending Oregon State College in Corvallis, Oregon where he earned his Bachelor and Master degrees while Irene supported the family by working in her nursing profession. Returning to Raymond in 1957, Derald enthusiastically built up the industrial arts program in the Raymond High School. Through many years he taught hundreds of boys and many girls the practical skills of drafting, woodworking, metal lathing and leather tooling. More importantly, he taught them patience and kindness and became a hero to many. Later in his career he was principal of Raymond Jr. High School and also taught for a time at the Wolf Creek Hutterite Colony and briefly in Foremost, Alberta.

Derald was a great contributor to his community, serving several years as president of the Raymond Civic Improvement Association. He served on many committees to spearhead the building and maintaining of the Raymond golf course and the Raymond swimming pool. Along the way he found time to coach basketball teams and enjoyed golfing and fishing with his many friends.

Derald joyfully participated in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints extending his love and service to all. He and Irene served in the Cardston Alberta Temple for 23 years as well as a family history mission in Salt Lake City, Utah with their son, Kevin.

Derald’s life was devoted to his large posterity but especially to his youngest son, Kevin, who was his best friend. His zest for life, sense of humour and outstanding example of love, service and caring blessed everyone. Derald was our great treasure and we will all miss him.

Derald’s family would like to thank the staff of the Good Samaritan Society-Garden Vista for the special care and attention given in the last two months of his life.

Friends may meet the family prior to the Funeral Service on Friday, February 8, from 10:00-10:45 a.m. at the church.

The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 8, 2019 at 11.00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; TAYLOR STREET CHAPEL, 221 North 400 West, Raymond Alberta, with Bishop Michael Stone officiating.

RAGAN

Revelations 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying and neither shall there be anymore pain, for it will pass and they shall know peace.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Alma Mary Ragan at the Chinook Regional Hospital on February 3, 2019. She was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Mary Bublait, her husband, John Ragan, brother-in-law Ken Bartz and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Betty and Joe Juris. Mom was born on March 25, 1931 in Lethbridge at the Galt Hospital. She was an honest, hardworking, woman who loved the simple things in life. Her love for God and her family meant more to her than life itself. She cherished every moment with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, friends and family. Some of her favorite memories are of going to Creston to pick cherries and stopping and fishing along the way. She loved going for drives just to be out in the mountains and fresh air. She will be sadly missed by her children – Leonard Ragan, Jim (Vivian) Ragan, Linda (Sid) Websdale and her grandchildren and great grandchildren – Mandy (Dave), Mackenzie and Kayleigh Shannon, Ritchie (Amber), Kourtney, Scarlet, Isabella and Charlee Ragan, Jesse (Kristen) Ragan, Jaclyn (Brian) and Jade Hamilton, Lyle (Colleen), Kayden, Kiera and Hunter Websdale, Neil (Shelley), Isla and Sydney Websdale, Crystal, Austin and Tyler Maslen and sister Alvinia Bartz and sister-in-law Anne Christiansen. As per Mom’s wishes, there will be a private funeral.

SLOOT

MRS. MARIA SLOOT, passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2019 in Fort Macleod at the age of 90 years, and her husband MR. REINDER SLOOT, passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 in Fort Macleod at the age of 92 years.

Together, they will be laid to rest in the Granum Cemetery during a Private Family Interment.

SMITH

Marlene Joyce Smith passed away at Bethany Riverview in Calgary on Sunday February 3, 2019 at the age of 81 years. Marlene was predeceased by her loving husband Harry “Merv” Smith and her parents Mike and Alice Yackulic. She leaves to cherish her memory her sister Carol (John) Savery of Wickenburg, Arizona, her brother Darryl Yackulic of Calgary, and her daughters Maureen (Trent) Elton of Simme, Marilyn (Les) Wickenheiser of Medicine Hat, and Michelle (Robert) Keewatin-Smith of Medicine Hat. Marlene was incredibly proud of her grandchildren Colin (Nicole), Candice, Josef, Katelyn, Karlee, Kailey, and Kody and of her great grandchildren Brooklyn, Carson, and Brock. Marlene was born on January 6, 1938 in Lethbridge and spent her early years in Barons where her parents owned a local restaurant. In her youth she was an active participant in basketball and the Girl Guides. At the age of 18 she married Merv and they settled in Champion where he owned a plumbing business which Marlene worked at as well. All three of their girls were born in the nearby Carmangay hospital and the girls spent their early years in Champion. Marlene was a leader in the local Girl Guides program, which all three of her daughters participated in. In 1976, the family relocated for Merv’s work to Medicine Hat and Marlene continued her association with the Girl Guides becoming the local commissioner. In Medicine Hat, Marlene also took on a new challenge as a real estate agent. She was never one to back down from a challenge. In Medicine Hat, the couple was also involved with the local Legion and Elks chapters. As their girls grew older and moved out they ensured the house would stay busy with their beloved Boxer dogs – King and Queeny. Marlene and Merv also enjoyed time in nature both at their condo in Fairmont Hot Springs and camping in their trailer at Elkwater. In her later years Marlene relocated to Lethbridge to be closer to her centenarian Uncle George and friends in the Champion area. In particular, she benefitted from the love and companionship of her incredible friend Elaine Buchan. Go rest high on that mountain Mom/Sister/Friend/Grandma/Great-Grandma – your work on earth is done. Ingeborg “Inge” Tope

1933 – 2019

Mrs. Ingeborg “Inge” Tope of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Mr. Leonard Tope, passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital, on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at the age of 86 years. Ingeborg was born in 1933 in Berlin, Germany. The darkest and most tragic period of the twentieth century in Europe. She was the oldest of three girls. When she was 5 years old, her father was suddenly taken away from her. He was approached by two secret police men, who allowed him to take his daughter home and after that he was taken to the local police station and soon after sent to a notorious concentration camp. No warranted arrest, no charges, no defense lawyer. That was the grim reality of Nazi Germany. The beginning of the end of freedom for millions of people. After 18 months of unimaginable suffering, Ingeborg’s father died. The family was left destitute and had to rely mostly on welfare. Ingeborg and her sisters remained fatherless, even though her mother eventually married again and gave birth to two sons some years later. The loss of Ingeborg’s father remained in her memory all her life. At the age of nine years old, she had to be in hiding, while her mother went to work during the day. At that time, her mother became pregnant, and before the air raids started, women and children were sent into the countryside, as we had relatives in the country, we were sent to stay with them. After the end of the war, the family returned to Berlin. Her mother eventually moved to another city and Ingeborg decided to remain in Berlin. As jobs were scarce and hard to find, she decided to travel to England, domestic workers were wanted there. She traveled alone, with little knowledge of English. She obtained work in an isolation hospital and found other German girls working there, which was a powerful help. After several months there, Leonard became a staff member, he had a diploma in infectious diseases nursing. He soon became the love of her life. After a short engagement, they married in 1953 in Exeter, England. In 1955, they decided to emigrate to Canada and lived in Calgary for eight years. After that time, Len decided to get his registered nurse qualification in New Zealand, as it was possible there to learn and earn. Therefore, it took 4 years, until he finished his training. During their time there, Inge worked in a lawyer’s office. In 1967 it was decided to return to Canada, via Europe to visit relatives. The return to Canada took place in 1968. Len accepted a position in St. Michael’s Hospital and Inge eventually obtained work in the Lethbridge Public Library. After living in Lethbridge for a brief time, they moved to Coaldale into their first home. In 1974, a new phase in their life began when they adopted Byron at the age of nearly seven years old. After being a twosome for many years, parenthood became a great challenge. During the following years, Len’s health regretfully deteriorated, he therefore worked in the E.R. and I.C.U. due to the fact surgery was needed on his legs which was deemed not possible due to elevated risk. He was a very dedicated and compassionate nurse and had a profound impact on the patients he nursed. To his great regret, he had to take early retirement in 1984, at the age of 56. While he was retired, he volunteered at St. Michael’s, and took charge of shopping and cooking. In 2001, he had a fall, which sadly resulted in him becoming confined to a wheelchair. During the time that Len retired, Inge had to have surgery, which had a serious complication and due to Len’s intervention, he saved her life, as she had an arrest, which Len dealt with, before help came, therefore saved her life, due to previous work experience. The most tragic event occurred, when Len had to leave home and became a resident of an assisted living facility. Without a doubt, time there proved to be the most frustrating and unhappy experience of their lives. After long and much suffering, Len died in 2010. Inge found, that life without Len would and could never be the same again. She would miss him, as long as she lived. She had moved from Coaldale to West Lethbridge in 2006 and lived there until 2013, at which time she moved to the south side of Lethbridge. She lived an extraordinary life. While living in Coaldale, her late husband, Len, converted to Catholicism, which she did also. She preferred one on one relationships, she had many friends and was always ready to make more. She befriended a middle-aged lady for many years, a young male refugee from Myanmar in Lethbridge named Aung; and also supported a foster child in Peru. Inge is survived by her only child Byron (Heather) Tope; granddaughter Amanda; grandson Braydon all of Lethbridge; as well as her brother Dieter Naujokat of Germany. Inge was predeceased by her husband Leonard Tope. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta. Inge’s cremated remains will be placed with her husband Leonard in the spring of 2019 in the Mountain View Cemetery.
