Helen Angyal

July 20, 1929 – February 2, 2019

Helen (Huszar) Angyal of Milk River, beloved wife of the late Steve Angyal, passed away peacefully with her family by her side after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Helen was born on July 20, 1929, in Hungary to Frank and Theresa Huszar, their second child and only daughter. She came to Canada in 1938 with her mother and her brothers Simon and John to join their father in Rosedale, Alberta. The family later moved to Lethbridge and Helen worked at the Lethbridge Laundry where she met some of her lifelong friends.

In 1945 Helen was introduced to Steve Angyal who was home on leave from the army. He had come with his parents to visit the Huszar family who were from the same village in Hungary. They were married on Remembrance Day in 1946 and celebrated their 67th anniversary before Steve’s passing in 2014.

Steve and Helen settled on the farm in 1-17 west of Milk River and raised five children while growing the farm. Helen learned to be a terrific cook, baker and hostess. She escaped to the garden when she needed peace and quiet. As well as being a devout Catholic, she was a member of the CWL and earned her 60-year pin. She and her friends established a Birthday Club and enjoyed every celebration. When they moved into Milk River in 1980, Helen learned to play golf and volunteered at the Travel Alberta site.

Helen always had a good book to read and she loved to dance and listen to music. She and Steve travelled extensively but the highlights of her life were family events and spending time with her grandchildren and her great grandchildren.

Helen is survived by her children Christine Barnhart, Ron (Barbara) Angyal, Kathy (Gord) McCarthy, Sheila (John) Mazutinec; nine grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; her brother Frank (Grace) Huszar and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her loving husband Steve, Helen was predeceased by her son Greg, parents Frank and Theresa Huszar, and brothers Simon and John.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Milk River Health Centre for their excellent care and for making the last nine years of Helen’s life happy and comfortable. Her family is forever grateful for the kindness and professionalism.

SHURTZ

BYRON ALFRED SHURTZ of Raymond, beloved husband of Nola (Orr) Shurtz, after a struggle with illness passed away peacefully, on Wednesday February 20th, at the age of 85 years. He was born February 26, 1933 in Calgary, then adopted by Rudolph and Maud (Romeril) Shurtz and raised in Lethbridge with his adopted siblings. He met Nola, who he affectionately called “Mike,” and they married in October 1952 in Lethbridge. They were later sealed in the Cardston temple. A short time later he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Eastern Canada. Nola stayed home in Lethbridge and supported him by working as a telephone operator. After his mission in 1956 they started their family, and he began working as a ballroom dance instructor simply as a means to provide for his family; however, it didn’t take long for him to discover an amazing gift for dancing and he was soon winning international awards. In addition to owning a dance studio, he also hosted a weekly dance program on local television called “Bop ‘n’ Talk.” There are literally thousands of men and women across Western Canada today who can credit their ability to waltz, jive and foxtrot, to Byron and Nola Shurtz. When he retired from dancing, Byron worked many years for Mo-Tires in Lethbridge and then worked for himself selling Nutcracker lubricant until he retired several years ago, leaving the business to his sons. He adored his family and loved spending time with them, playing games and just visiting, and he was an amazing example of Christ-like, unconditional love. His testimony of the Gospel was unshakable. He had a great sense of humor and the simplest things made him laugh. He also loved music and won awards singing duets with his sister, Coral, and he sang barbershop with his sons and a friend, who called themselves “Three Shurtz and a Sock.” He loved American politics and was an artist and carpenter. During his final days at the Raymond Care Centre he was upbeat and positive, and we are beyond grateful for all the caregivers who so lovingly attended to him like he was their own father! Byron is survived by his wife Nola (Orr), daughter Terry (Craig Clifton), sons Delon (Sue West), and Dan (Connie Oranchuk), brother Royden (Alene), sister Coral (Doug Terry), 18 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. Byron was predeceased by, and now reunited with, his son Barry, daughter Kim, his parents Rudolph and Maud, his sister Madeline and brother Don.

Friends may meet the family on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 from 7:00 – 8:00 pm or prior to the service on Thursday, February 28, 2019 from 1:00 – 1:45 pm at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Taylor Street Chapel, 221 N 400 W, Raymond, Alberta, the Funeral Service will follow at 2:00pm with Bishop Corry Tolman officiating. Interment to follow in the Temple Hill Cemetery, Raymond, Alberta.

SMITH

On Friday, February 22, 2019 we said goodbye to our beloved husband, father and grandfather, BYRON CHARLES SMITH.

We, his family, will miss our loving patriarch. Dad is survived by his eternal companion of over 72 years, Roberta (Billingsley); children Craig (Colleen) of Glenwood, Wendy (Dave) Miller of Coalhurst, Barbara (Robert) Nish of Lethbridge, Aileen (John) Duncan of Austin, TX, Kevin (Kelly) of Glenwood, Danny (Wanda) of Bow City, Drew (Ross Robinson) of Seattle, WA, and Julie (Marc) Walker of Highland, UT; 35 grandchildren, 69 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild; and brother Bryce of Bow Island.

We have faith that Dad has been welcomed home by family and dear friends who preceded him including his parents Clarence and Elizabeth, brothers Thaine, Grant and Cleon, and grandchildren David, Sariah, Andrew and Nathan.

Dad was born in Cardston on April 11, 1926 and spent almost his entire life in the Glenwood area. As the middle of 5 sons, he began farming with his Dad and brothers at a young age and it became his passion and vocation. He attended school in Glenwood where he made friends lasting a lifetime. With them he enjoyed playing baseball and basketball, riding horses, going fishing and later going dancing.

Near the end of WWII, Dad joined the armed forces and served within Canada until March 1946. He returned home and married his sweetheart on Sept. 12, 1946 in the Cardston Temple. Together they raised 8 children who in turn gave them a grand posterity.

After spending a few of their early married years working in Welling, Dad and Mom returned to Glenwood where they eventually started a dairy with Dad’s parents and brothers. He worked tirelessly on the farm to support his family while still finding time to devote to church and community, serving on the Cardston School Board for 18 years and in ward and stake callings throughout his life. He and Mom served in the Cardston Temple and then a mission together in the Canadian Maritimes.

Dad’s greatest joys were his family, his membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and life on the farm in Glenwood. He was devoted to the love of his life, Roberta, who misses him deeply.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to many wonderful friends and extended family who have enriched Dad’s life and supported us in our grief, to the church and community of Glenwood for being his lifelong home, and to the compassionate caregivers who have helped ease his way at the end of his earthly journey.

The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Glenwood. Friends are invited to meet with the family at the church prior to the service from 9:45-10:45 am. Interment to follow in the Glenwood Cemetery.
