DOUGLAS ROY ELLIOTT, of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, February 25, 2019 at the age of 73 years.

JENSEN

Reed Carlos Jensen was born on September 17, 1923 in Aetna, Alberta and is the second of seven children born to Einar and Lenore Jensen. He is the twin brother to Reece. They lived in Aetna until Reed was about 5 ½ years old, and then they moved to Barnwell, Alberta. Here Reed and his siblings grew up on the family farm 1 mile east of Barnwell. On the farm he learned to work and care for animals. Reed loved the farm, loved animals, and loved to work. There were lots of chores and other work to do and having a household of boys helped to get that work done. In November 1941, Reed and Reece enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, went to Ontario to begin their training, and then were stationed in England until the end of WW II in 1945. During this time, Reed and Reece were never separated, and Reed was always grateful that they were able to serve together the entire time. At the end of the war, they came home and started looking for work, careers, and wives. On Oct. 28, 1953 Reed married Arma Jean Francis in the Cardston Alberta Temple. They lived in Barnwell at first, and then moved to Taber, where they lived from 1958 to 1970, where they farmed/ranched just west of Taber. In 1970 they bought a farm north of Barnwell, moved there, and continued farming/ranching until 1997. Reed and Jean were happy to have been able to raise their 9 children on the farm, to be able to teach them how to work, and to serve others. After retiring from the farm, they built a home in Barnwell and enjoyed hosting family gatherings. Reed was an active and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in various roles and capacities in the church throughout his life and enjoyed whatever opportunity he had to serve. He was a counselor in a Bishopric, the Ward Welfare Farm Coordinator, and later in life, a Scout Leader. He also enjoyed working with Jean in the temple. Reed was predeceased by his parents, Einar & Lenore Jensen. His siblings, Vance, Reece, Thea, Devon, Dwin and Arden. He was also predeceased by his wife Jean, 2 grandsons, Jesse Jensen and Tyler Williams, and 1 granddaughter, Hannah Jensen. He is survived by his children, Kathy (Jordan) Samhuri, Carlos (Julie) Jensen, Nola (David) Williams, LoAnne Bajowa, Susan (Robert) Berezay, Alan (Jeannette) Jensen, Corinne (Tony) Yee, Eric (Chrystal) Jensen, and Carolyn (David) Crockett. He has 37 grandchildren, and 29 great grandchildren, with more on the way. Family was everything to Reed, and he always enjoyed having his children and grandchildren around. Nothing made him happier. The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 11:00 am at the Barnwell Chapel, with Bishop Troy Anderson officiating. Friends may meet the family Friday Mar 8, 2019 from 7:00-8:30 pm, at the Barnwell Chapel, or Saturday Mar 9, 2019, prior to the service, from 10:00-10:45 am. Internment will follow the service in the Barnwell Cemetery.

JOHN ROGERSON KNOX, beloved husband of Helen Knox, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at the age of 92 years.

MCLAFFERTY

MARIE ANNE MCLAFFERTY, the Original Irish Washerwoman, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family after a brief illness on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at the age of 95 years.

Mom was born in Bellevue, in the Blue Canadian Rockies, on April 22, 1923.

She married Hugh Patrick McLafferty on October 30, 1946. For 65 years, they had a special bond and were forever a team, first living in Bellevue and then moving to Lethbridge in 1955 after the mines closed.

Mom was the perpetual worker bee and, to this day, thinks her retired daughters should have jobs.

Upon her retirement in 1985 from Microtel (Automatic Electric), she and Hugh began a new life in Calgary. They built a beautiful new home with new adventures in mind. They were very active with ballroom dancing, exploring Calgary and following the family in their athletic pursuits, as they were their biggest fans. In 2003, they returned to Lethbridge to be closer to their growing extended family.

After Dad passed away in 2011, Mom – though legally blind – continued to live independently at Martha’s House and participated in the weekly blind bowling league. She was full of energy; she would walk the halls with her pedometer and count the miles. She was always entertaining people with her witty remarks. Everyone has heard her say, “Go straight home and don’t talk to strangers!”

Our “Special Mom and Grandma”, who was so proud of her family, will be forever missed by her daughters: Sheryl Holthe of Lethbridge and Colleen (Grant) Frier of Blairmore; her granddaughters, Kelly (Tom) Mortlock of Medicine Hat and Shannon (Cheyno) Finnie of Lethbridge; her seven great-grandchildren, Marcus, Russell, Nathyn and Jordan Mortlock of Medicine Hat and Marshall, Emmitt and Payton Finnie of Lethbridge.

Mom is also survived by her favourite younger sister, Eileen Jensen of Calgary.

She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Ron Holthe of Lethbridge, in 2010.

Mom will be forever remembered as a feisty, tiny woman. As she always said, “Good things come in small packages” and she was dynamite!

Her death leaves a heartache no one can heal

Her love leaves a memory no one can steal

A special thank-you to the awesome staff on 4C at the Chinook Regional Hospital for the wonderful comforting care and to her new friend, Susan, for the laughter and kindness.

VAN LUYK

God called David home because he needed him to fix something.

DAVID WAYNE VAN LUYK, of Lethbridge, passed away suddenly in a tragic accident on Friday, March 1, 2019 at the age of 51 years.

He is survived by his beloved parents, Jacob & Maria Van Luyk; his sisters, Cheryl Van Luyk and Anita (Tony) Van Ee; his niece and nephews, Tony Jr., Eric and Kristie Van Ee, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by his grandparents, Tekla & John Melnyk and Jean & Peter Van Luyk.

David was a quiet, gentle and hardworking soul who was always riding his bike in the coulees or golfing in the greens. He was a man of many talents who loved to help everyone. He will be immensely missed by everyone who loved him.

A Celebration of David’s Life will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Monday, March 11, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Glenda Wert officiating.

WEASEL HEAD

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend WADE EVERETT ‘Pahk’siikaikiinahsoyii’ WEASEL HEAD (Wells) at the age of 46 on March, 2, 2019.

Left to mourn his passing are his friend Shannon Day Chief; his children; Tay-lynne (J.C) Hunt, Shalaine , Jadelyn, and Bransen Weasel Head; adopted son Travis (Chanel) ES; siblings; Jolie (Fagan), Lydia (Emerson), Sherri (Mike Jr.), Sheila (Paul), Christy, Nathan (Shyanne), Larissa and Anita (Gary); nieces; Heidi (Drake), Madison, Chaliss, Lexus, Coby, Amerie, Angelica, Mikal, Kadence, Tylee, Mia and Veda ES; nephews; Griffin, Chapel, Noah, Kyzer (Cheyenne), Lyle, and Tim Jr. (Jolen) ES; grand-daughter Ophelia and grand-son Xavier; adopted sister’s: Tina ES, Darlene Davis and Candace Shade (MB).

Wade was born on January 12, 1973 in Cardston AB to the late Jordan Wells and the late Marilyn Weasel Head (Moses). He was raised on the Blood Reserve, where he would often stay with many relatives and friends. Wade attended school at Stand-off Elementary school, St.Mary’s Jr and Sr High School. He attended Red Crow Community College where he received his GED. Later in his life, he attended the University of Lethbridge where he was working towards obtaining his Bachelor of Management Degree. His work accomplishments include: working as a summer student with the Standoff Superette, BT Recreation, BT Public Works, BT Lands Department, KDL security, Lethbridge Homeless Shelter and contracting for BT Housing. He enjoyed roofing with his auntie Puncho.

At an early age, Wade developed a love for the game of hockey. Even before he learned to skate, he would always be seen with a cut hockey stick. His father Jordan taught him how to skate at the age of 3 and since then has always had a passion and love for the game of hockey. The love for hockey, lead him to be a real “rink-rat”. He would spend countless hours at the rink where he would end the day off playing with the oldtimers. Throughout his hockey career he played on numerous teams and brought home many league and provincial championships. A highlight of his hockey career was when he played for the Kainai Golden Chief Organization and they battled against Russia and Sweden. Wade showed tremendous leadership on and off the ice. His second favorite sport was playing slo-pitch. Wade and Lionel Weasel Head put together the Dust Devil’s slo-pitch team where they were both captains and often were looked up to as leaders. Along-side the Dust Devil’s, Wade travelled to Tri-City in Washington to play in the Slo-Pitch World Series. Wade was a natural athlete and caught on to many sports he tried and always brought home many MVP’s, Allstar’s and Championships. His athletic ability gave him the opportunity to travel throughout Canada where he met and developed life-long friendships and family.

Wade had many accomplishments he was proud of, but the proudest moments of his life were when he became a father to his children Tay-lynne, Shalaine, Jadelyn, and Bransen. He loved his babies more than words can express and he had a special bond with each and every one of them. In every conversation he would be heard speaking of his children and the love he had for them. His family meant a lot to him. Him being the oldest and only boy, he was a real momma’s boy. He had a special bond with his step-dad Charlie whom he referred to as “Moses”. Along side Marilyn, Charlie, his sisters, and his late grandmother Annie, he travelled across the US to play hand-games. He and his late uncle Tyrone “Jesus” shared a favorite hand-game song. Wade made his cursillo in 1995. Wade had a tender heart. He loved and treated everyone he met with compassion and respect. Wade referred to all his friends and family as his brothers and sisters. His memory will live on in everyone he knew and met. His family will miss him dearly.

His aunts; Theresa MC, Nina B, Randa (Danny) WH, Brenda (Tina) WH, Jennifer WH, Delores SA, Donna P, Gloria WH, Carol F, Mary WH, Ernestine WH, Rose (Pat) F, Doreen (Jeff) DR, and Noreen (Lloyd) P. His great-uncles; Pete (Wanda) WH and Tony F. His great-aunts; Harriet and Beauty W, Celestine MB.

He was predeceased by his mother Marilyn Weasel Head (Moses) and father Jordan Wells. His maternal grand-parents Annie Plume and Patrick WH Jr. Paternal grand-parents Jim and Molly W. His brother Tim (Roxanne) ES and sister Gina HS. His uncles; Fred, David and Tyrone WH, Jim and Edwin W, and Eric B. His Aunts; Loretta ES, Marlene WH, Florence BR, Joan W, Anna W, Shirley CR, Shirley MH and Darlene Pilling(Wells). A Family Service will be at Legacy Funeral Home, Cardston on Friday, March 8th at 4:00 p.m. followed by the Wake Service at the White Calf Hall, Standoff from 6:00 – 11:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Blood Reserve on Saturday, March 9th, at 11:00 a.m.

Karen Willoughby (Sterling)

1947- 2019

Mrs. Karen Lee Willoughby (Sterling), beloved wife of Mr. Lee Willoughby of Lethbridge passed away on Monday, March 4, 2019 at St. Michaels Health Centre at the age of 71 years. Karen was born in Melita Manitoba, on September 20, 1947 to Jean and Pat Sterling. She completed school in Melita and moved to Winnipeg then Calgary where she took a key punch operator course. Bored… she joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1967 as a Navy Radio Operator and was posted to Mill Cove N.S. Karen realized the limits of being a Naval Radio Operator and changed trades to Teletype Operator. Eager to see something other than a teletype machine she requested and was accepted as a flight attendant with the Canadian Forces. She spent 4 years flying everybody, from the Prime Minister to the Queen of England, literally! After returning from flying, bored again she volunteered for a UN posting in Egypt and was one of the first females to be accepted. Upon returning she moved around and then got bored and volunteered to be the Senior Flight attendant and was again off flying. After returning she was eventually posted to Penhold where she met Lee. Lee was eventually posted to Colorado Springs and her to Goose Bay Labrador. They decided this wasn’t working too well, and Karen took her release to join Lee in Colorado, soaking in the hot tub, cutting grass, and chasing squirrels for the last two years there. After Colorado they were posted to Vancouver and eventually Ottawa where they decided to call it quits and move to Lethbridge to be close to family. Karen took a part time job at Safeway to keep busy in retirement and eventually retired from that to look after her beloved black lab “Mika”. Her most memorable times she would say were definitely flying with the Royal Family and Prime Ministers and Governor Generals. She enjoyed golfing curling and playing ball in her younger days. The family cannot thank the nurses and staff at Palliative Care at St. Michaels enough, as well as Dr. Walsh and Vicky Dixon at Home Care for their devotion to Karen’s wellbeing in her time of need. Karen is survived by her husband Lee and Stepdaughter Jan (Chad) and their children, her mother Jean Sterling; sisters Patricia Downey and Ruth Zahrodney; brothers Bill (Cheryl) Sterling and Stephen (Darlene) Sterling, along with numerous nieces and nephews Karen is predeceased by her father Pat Sterling and brother Robert Sterling, brothers in law Francis Downey, and Larry Zahrodney. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 960 19 St S, Lethbridge, AB T1J 1W5. At Karen’s request there will be no Service. There will be a private Celebration of her Life in Melita Manitoba in the spring when she will be interred with her family.
