BAILIE, PATRICIA ELLEN

JULY 31, 1925 – APRIL 16, 2019

Pat passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 after struggling with COPD in recent years. Pat was born and raised in New Brigden, AB and had fond memories of her farm-life childhood in spite of growing up in the Depression. She obtained her teaching certificate and while working at the Skiff School, Pat met and married Ted Bailie in 1947. They spent the next years farming and raising four daughters until retiring to Calgary in 1985. She was an active community member and was known for her kind heart and good humour. Pat made friends wherever she went and always had time for a coffee and a chat. Family share many memories of wicked board games followed by homemade pie. Pat was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Pat was predeceased by her husband Ted; her parents Jack and Bessie Doolan; and her siblings Mary, Bill, and Jim. She was the best of friends to her daughters: Maureen (Leonard), Joan, Gail, Shiela (Tom); ten grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the wonderful caring staff at Southwood Intercare Fairview Unit seniors residence who made Pat’s final two years as comfortable as possible. JAMES “JIM” GEORGE SCOTT DAVIS, beloved husband of Lynne Davis, passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital, on Sunday, April 21, 2019 at the age of 76 years.

Besides his wife Lynne, Jim is survived by his daughter Terri Davis (Daryl Dyck) and son Mark Davis; and grandchildren Breanna Maley, Chase Maley and Ainsleigh Davis. He is also survived by his brother Roger (Joni) Davis and sisters Margaret Dicker, Beverley (Alvin) Bolokoski, Eleanor Lloyd and Marlene (Clifford) Brown.

Jim was predeceased by his parents John Rogers Davis and Mary Barrie; brother John Davis; sisters Mary Pat and Marion Ober; and brothers-in-law Norman Ober and Wayne Lloyd.

Jim was born May 27, 1942 in Lethbridge. Growing up, he attended school in Coalhurst. On October 23, 1965, he married the love of his life, Lynne Easton in Lethbridge, and started their family together.

Jim farmed all his life, operated a gravel business as well as many other businesses. He was usually seen driving around the farm with a truck full of dogs. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Coalhurst Branch.

Jim loved his family and was very proud of them. He was known for his sense of humour, especially with his nieces, nephews and friends of his kids whom he always enjoyed. He will be dearly missed.

Ivanka Dimnik

1922 – 2019

Ivanka Dimnik of Lethbridge, Alberta, beloved wife of the late Anton (Tony) Dimnik, passed away on April 22, 2019 at the age of 96 years. Born in Gorica Vas, Slovenia on August 4, 1922, Ivanka was the 10th child of Jakob and Ana Maté. She resided in Slovenia until near the end of World War II when, to escape the ravages of war, she and her younger sister were sent by their family to seek temporary refuge in Austria. That temporary refuge lasted for three years, after which Ivanka and her sister emigrated to Canada. Ivanka eventually settled in Lethbridge to be with her future husband, Tony. Ivanka met Tony just months before leaving Austria. That short time together led to a year long courtship consisting of eloquent poetic love letters to each other until Tony emigrated to Canada. Ivanka and Tony reunited in 1949 and married in 1950. Throughout her life, Ivanka displayed a strong personality which included characteristics of tenacity, determination, selflessness, responsibility for others and a strong instinct to survive. All of that was coupled with a very strong faith in God and prayer. Ivanka’s instinct to survive was evident not only in the struggle she endured as a non-English speaking immigrant to Canada, but also in facing serious health challenges. This included a near death experience in 1958 when after her heart and breathing stopped and she started to “move toward the bright light,” she turned back thinking that she could not die leaving her husband alone with five young children. After that experience, she rallied from and conquered other illnesses, including lung cancer and a stroke. In addition to her strong personality Ivanka, especially in her later years, was known as a lady of grace, elegance, beauty and a person with a warm and welcoming smile. While all of Ivanka’s formal education was in Slovenia, including college level education where she excelled in the area of mathematics, she was a life long learner and encouraged her children to be the same. All six of her children have excelled in educational endeavours leading to multiple post secondary and graduate degrees. Ivanka was a member of the Our Lady of Assumption Church serving in various ministries over the years and a long- time member of the Catholic Women’s League. Ivanka’s memory will be cherished and she will be dearly missed by her children: Tony Dimnik of Belleville, Ontario; Martha (Ralph) Ottenbreit of Regina, Saskatchewan; Stan (Jane) Dimnik of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Hedy (Michael) Lemiski of Calgary, Alberta; Barbara (Dave) Snopek of Cranbrook, British Columbia; and Michael (Michelle) Dimnik of Lethbridge, Alberta. Ivanka is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and several in-laws. Ivanka was predeceased by her loving husband Tony, her cherished daughter-in-law Judith, her parents and her 10 siblings. A Vigil Rites (Prayer Service) will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 29, 2019 at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CHURCH, 2405 – 12 Avenue South, Lethbridge AB, with Father Kevin Tumback, Celebrant. William “Bill” Erickson

1925- 2019

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William “Bill” Erickson, at the age of 94 years on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at the Chinook Regional Hospital due to complications from the flu. JOYCE (GHOLZ) FELLNER

July 22, 1947 – April 23, 2019

JOYCE FELLNER passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family at St. Michael’s Health Centre Palliative Care Unit on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at the age of 71 years, after a courageous battle with ALS.

Joyce was born and raised in Bakersfield, California. She attended public schools in Bakersfield and graduated with honors from high school in 1965. Throughout her junior and senior high school and Bakersfield College careers, she played the French horn and, in 1966, marched with the Bakersfield College Band in the Rose Bowl Parade. For a number of years she played in the Lethbridge Gold Band. In the summer of 1964, she was an exchange student in Mexico City where she attended the University of Mexico to study Spanish. From 1967 to 1969, she attended the University of Oregon-Eugene and majored in German, the language she studied throughout high school and college. She graduated from the University of Oregon in 1969 with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Oregon for high academic honors.

In 1968 she met her future husband, Erwin Fellner, at the University of Oregon. On New Year’s Eve, Erwin and Joyce were engaged and on March 27, 1969 the two were married in Bakersfield. During the summer of 1969, they moved to Lethbridge where Joyce continued her studies to become a teacher. On April 18, 1970, Suzanne was born at St. Michael’s Hospital. Joyce’s teaching career started at Hamilton Jr. High School where she taught for two years. From 1973 to 1975, she lived in Germany where Erwin was appointed Vice Principal of the Department of National Defence’s Junior School in Baden Sölingen, Germany. In July 1975, the family returned to Lethbridge. Shortly after arriving in Lethbridge, Heidi was born and, in 1976, Joyce returned to teaching and was appointed to Gilbert Paterson Junior High School where she stayed for most of her 22 years teaching career.

In 1993, Erwin retired and Joyce took a one-year leave of absence so they could both attend the University of Klagenfurt in Austria. Upon their return to Lethbridge, Joyce taught third and fourth grade for two years. In 1996, Joyce and Erwin accepted a two-year teaching position as the founding staff of the Dresden International School in Dresden, Germany. Joyce’s fluency in German was an asset in German-speaking countries as well in fitting in with Erwin’s many Austrian relatives. Soon after returning to Lethbridge, Joyce retired from teaching in 2000.

During the many years living in Europe, Joyce and Erwin travelled extensively. After their retirements, they travelled to many parts of the world. Besides travelling, Joyce was a devoted grandmother and an avid quilter.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Erwin, daughters Suzanne Schleindlhuber and Heidi Wood (Dylan), stepchildren Craig and Sandra Fellner (Lori), grandchildren Lukas, Lia, Spencer and Miles, nephews Andrew Schuchardt (Tiffany) and Nathan Gholz (Sara), and nieces Anita Ryder (Dan) and Laurel Gholz.

She was predeceased by her father, Charles Gholz (1983), her mother, Florence Gholz (2007) and her brother, Lee Alan Gholz (1999).

A Celebration of Joyce’s Life will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at 2:00 P.M.

BILL HAND

WILLIAM H. HAND, beloved spouse to Lori Hand, passed away April 25, 2019 at the age of 75 years. HARTMAN

PATRICIA ANN HARTMAN, beloved wife of Gerhardt Hartman, of Coaldale, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital, on Sunday, April 14, 2019 at the age of 78 years.

Besides her loving husband Gerhardt, Patricia is survived by her children: Shelley (John) Lohues of Coaldale, Juanita Hartman of Lethbridge and Michael (Crystal) Hartman of Lethbridge; 12 grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Melba (Jim) Copithorne of Cochrane, AB, and Beverley (Doug) Dean of Elkford, B.C.; and sisters-in-law Dorothy McKeown and Delores McKeown.

Patricia was predeceased by her parents Florence and Jack McKeown, sister Faith Dahlberg and brothers Patrick, Paul and Lonnard McKeown.

Patricia was born May 29, 1940 in Cut Knife, Saskatchewan. After completing high school, she enrolled in the nursing training program of St. Paul’s School of Nursing in Saskatoon. She graduated in May 1961 and began nursing at St. Paul’s Hospital. She also served at St. Michael’s in Lethbridge, Municipal Hospital in Medicine Hat and later assisted with handicapped children in a school in Sherwood Park, all the while raising three active children.

Patricia used her talents to help with the Girl Guides, the Rosary Guild and was a member of a local Christian Life Community, serving also as district rep on National Council. She was part of a Bridge club in Lethbridge, always ready to serve drinks if she was ‘dummy’.

VIOLA KACER, beloved mother of Darren, of Lethbridge, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, April 23rd, 2019, at the age of 86 years.

Viola was predeceased by her husband, Joe, on September 25, 2016. They were married in 1961 and farmed in the Cranford area until retiring to Lethbridge in 1995.

Viola will be lovingly remembered by her son Darren, and her sister, Mary Ann.

Mr. Johannes Mans of Picture Butte, beloved husband of Mrs. Huibertje Mans, passed away surrounded by his loving family at Bethesda Care Home on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at the age of 88 years. Johannes was born in Aalburg, the Netherlands on December 25, 1930. Together with his family he immigrated to Canada in 1982 and settled in Nobleford area where he farmed and lived till his retirement in 2014. Besides his loving wife Huibertje of 64 years, Johannes is survived by his children Andries (Coby) Mans, Anneke (Henk) Van Ginkle, Arjan (Joanne) Mans, Joost (Caroline) Mans, Henk (Rita) Mans, Toos (Harry) Vandenberg, and Els (Ed) Van Hierden; 39 grandchildren; 63 great grandchildren and one sister Mrs. E Van Essen of Picture Butte. Johannes was predeceased by his brother, numerous brother’s in-law, and sister’s in-law all from the Netherlands. MAXIM, Mary Magdalene (nee Kark)

September 7, 1925 – April 20, 2019

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Mary Maxim on Saturday April 20, 2019, at the age of 93 years. Born September 7, 1925 in Nyircsaholy, Hungary, Mary was three years of age when she immigrated to Canada with her parents, Julius and Anna Kark. As a young girl she lived and worked in Lethbridge, Alberta. Mary married James Maxim on August 30, 1947 and moved to Calgary, Alberta where they built their life together. Our Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother was a strong woman with an optimism and a sense of joy that she expressed each and every day. Mary had an amazing work ethic and worked at the Hudson’s Bay Company for over 35 years. She was a fantastic cook, an avid gardener and was a great conversationalist who was most willing to express her opinion on the world’s daily events. She enriched and touched your life just by knowing her. Mary is predeceased by her husband James, and is survived by her son, James Maxim (Frances Lecky), her granddaughter Alicia Maxim-Welsh (Daley Welsh), and her great granddaughter Evie; her son, Robert Maxim (Anne Isbister), her granddaughter, Heather Russell (Dwight Russell), and her great grandchildren, Alaura, Jillian, Layne, and Seth. Mary will be greatly missed by her sister, Irene Onody (Alex) of Lethbridge, and countless relatives and friends in Canada, the USA, and Hungary. Allan Nielsen of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at the age of 79 years. Allan was born in Calgary, AB on July 13, 1939. Allan met the love of his life Pauline Bovey when they were teenagers. They married in 1961 and remained devoted to each other until Pauline’s passing in 2006. Allan was a quiet, honest, hardworking man. He spent many years working for the City Transit departments in Calgary, Vancouver and Lethbridge. Allan will always be remembered for the love and devotion he gave to his wife and family. The love he shared with the numerous family pets and his wonderful sense of humour will never be forgotten. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Neal Minoru Sakamoto, of Lethbridge, AB. on April 26, 2019 at the age of 69 years.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ken Sakamoto (February 13, 1975) and Amy Sakamoto (September 23, 2007).

Neal was born on June 1, 1949 in Taber, AB. He moved to Lethbridge in 1972 where he resided until his passing.

ZAROWNY

Apr. 12, 1940 – Apr. 20, 2019

The Lord, our Saviour, called ANTHONY “TONY” TERRY ZAROWNY to his forever home at the age of 79 years.

He will be missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Sherri-Lyn of 60 years; daughters Sharon of White Rock, BC and Sandy of Toronto, ON.; grandson Sean (Jill) of Oakville, ON. and granddaughter Holly of Langley, BC.

He will also be missed by his sisters: Stella Barter, Lorae Lovick, Lucille Minnis and Roze Zubacz and brothers Aubin (friend Mary) and Ralph; brother-in-law Walter and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Tony was predeceased by his son Roger Anthony, parents Katherina and John, sisters Joyce, Jean (Genolfa), Emilia, Annie and Nellie and brothers Mike, Edward and Walter.

He was a hard worker and had a heart filled with kindness, compassion and love for adventure. He loved to ski, fish and even sky dived with his family. Travel was like, “Let’s go” and he did; to the Yukon, Alaska, Hawaii, Barbados and falling in love with Paradise Island in Nassau. He went some places several times over.

Tony was proud to be a member of the Union of Operating Engineers, Local 115 Burnaby, B.C. By trade, Tony operated hydraulic, conventional and rough terrain cranes. He worked for over 28 years on bridges, dams, power and gas plants and erected towers for pipelines. After he retired, he drove big rigs, doing low bed U.S./Canada hauls for almost five years. This took him to all 48 states and he called it his paid holiday, his “million mile plus” tour. He worked hard and played hard. May he rest in peace.

Per Tony’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. His immediate family will have a Celebration of Life at a later date in BC.
