BRIERE

LUCIEN BRIERE passed away at St. Therese Villa after a valiant effort for life on Sunday, May 12, 2019, at the age of 93 years, only a few hours before his 94th birthday. Lucien is survived by his granddaughter, Pearl Linda-Marie Osit of Delta, BC and his surrogate family, the Middletons of Picture Butte, who loved him like their own. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Margaret Vance Holmes. Lucien robbed banks; he spent most of his life in prison and he was always deemed to be ‘unrehabilitable’. However, he made every effort he could to improve the quality of his life and of those around him. In prison, he would fix toys and perform as Santa during the holidays and as ‘Smiley the Clown’ whenever a smile or laugh was needed. Though he carried a criminal record, Lucien was loved dearly by his wife, Mary. The couple met at a bus stop while on probation and they connected instantly. Not long after on May 13, 1988, they were married in Victoria, BC and stayed together until her passing in 2010. He was also cherished by his granddaughter, Pearl, who was his biggest fan. Whenever he and Pearl were together, they would affectionately refer to each other as ‘#1’. They spent many hours with each other while watching their favourite show — Bonanza. Lucien was a compulsive volunteer; he was always active in community parades and he delivered newspapers for the Lethbridge Herald for over ten years. He had a unique sense of humour and quick wit which stayed with him until his final breath. He was well-loved by his wife, granddaughter, the Middletons and those who cared for him at St. Therese Villa. Pearl expresses a great thank-you to all who befriended and loved her grandpa. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of RICHARD “RICK” FRENCH, beloved husband of Connie French of Lethbridge, surrounded by his family at St. Michael’s Health Centre – Palliative Care Unit on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at the age of 62 years. Rick is survived by his best friend and loving wife, Connie French; his mother, Margaret French; his siblings, Chris (Arlene) McDonald of Lethbridge, Bill (Anita) McDonald of Red Deer, Michael (Wendy) McDonald of Lethbridge, Pat (Andy) MacNamara of Lethbridge, John (Melissa) McDonald of Lethbridge, Jackie French (Tim) of Lethbridge; his sister-in-law Sharon (Jerry) Cash of Lebanon Oregon, brother-in-law Randy (Brenda) Wurzer of Lethbridge, sister-in-law Karol (Perry) Miller of Coaldale, brother-in-law Greg (Kathy) Wurzer of Warden, Washington; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and his special little friend, Jade Card. Rick is predeceased by his father, Ken French; his parents-in-law, Gerald & Betty Wurzer; and his brother-in-law, Ed Wurzer of Warden, Washington. One of Rick’s greatest loves was his 1957 Chevy which he put countless hours into restoring. He also enjoyed many years of motorcycle riding and vacationing in Hawaii with Connie. His career as a truck driver started as a cattle hauler for Ken French Livestock where he worked for over a decade. Rick’s journey completed as a proud truck driver for Logic Lumber Ltd. A Celebration of Rick’s Life will be held at NORD-BRIDGE SENIORS CENTRE, 1904 – 13 Avenue North, Lethbridge, AB on Saturday, May 25, 2019 from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. SONYA JUSTINA KINSLOW, the beloved wife of Jayson Leong of Lethbridge, passed away with her family at her side in Lethbridge on Monday, May 13, 2019 at the age of 39 years. She will be greatly missed by her husband, Jayson Leong, her parents, Israel and Edith Kinslow, one brother, Justin, sister-in-laws Sheri Kinslow, Muoi Leong, nephews Sheldon Leong and Owen Kinslow, niece Kayla Leong, mother-in-law Lily Leong, brother-in-laws Jamie and Anthony Leong. She is also survived by her dear pets, Bella, Tyson and Misty. Sonya was a compassionate, thoughtful and honorable woman who loved her family and animal companions. She loved to travel and enjoyed her most recent trip to Newfoundland. Her love of life and people touched the lives of all those who knew her. Her quiet courage, strength of spirit, creativity and sense of humor will be carried forward by those who knew and loved her. Ernest Mercer

1927 – 2019

Mr. Ernest W.R (Ernie) Mercer of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Mrs. Kay Mercer, passed away in Lethbridge at Fairmont Extendicare on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at the age of 91 years. Ernie was born in Lethbridge on June 26, 1927 and attended White School and farmed in that area for all of his life. He filled his life with family, farming, fishing trips, goose hunting, and building a home in Vancouver. Besides his loving wife Kay, Ernie is survived by his son Tyler, grandson Jason, siblings Della Katan, Audrey (Dale) Wilson, Myrna Olshaski, Lloyd (Edna) Mercer, and Clayton (Diane) Mercer, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by father Ernest Sr, his mother Marion, brother Don, and young son Wayne Ernest. Thank you to the staff at Extendicare for taking such great care of Ernie during his time there. PROEHL

SOPHIE PROEHL, beloved wife of the late Adolf Proehl, passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Monday, May 13, 2019 at the age of 86 years. Sophie is survived by her children, Rita (George) Boltezar, Gerald (Karen) Proehl and Lori Proehl and her grandchildren, Stuart, Russell, Ashlyn and Sonya, who will miss their Grandma very much. She is predeceased by her husband, Adolf and her sisters, Dagmar, Lydia and Olga. Sophie was born January 25, 1933 in Beresowka, Ukraine into a farming family. After being raised in Germany, she immigrated with her family to Canada in 1951 where they settled near Lethbridge. She has remained steadfast in her love of Lethbridge and area. Mom has been a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for 68 years. She appreciated and enjoyed the spiritual counsel of Pastors Richard Brown and Lee Loveridge. Mom was head cook at St. Michael’s Hospital for almost 40 years. Her love of cooking was only surpassed by her love of family. She prepared Sunday dinner for all of us each week – it was always delicious! Mom enjoyed gardening and especially loved her flowers. Traveling was something she also really enjoyed, having visited India, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Thailand, Hawaii, Belize and several other places in Canada, the United States and Central America. Her favourite vacations were spent cruising the ocean; she was particularly fond of South America. We will always be grateful for the love of family and friends that Mom instilled in us. Her strong work ethic, business sense and love of the land will never be forgotten. BURDETTE GARNET “SANDY” SANFORD, beloved husband of Mylene Sanford, passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at the age of 78 years. He was born on January 13, 1941 in Yellow Grass, SK. Sandy is survived by his loving wife, Mylene; his stepsons, Jeff (Lorna) Roberts and Dwayne Roberts; his grandchildren, Michael, Emily and Thomas; a brother, Gordon Sanford of Moose Jaw, SK; a sister, Darlene Lowenberg of Moose Jaw, SK; a sister-in-law, Joan Sanford of Cranbrook, BC, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. Roger (Rochgus) Van Dellen

October 21, 1929 – May 15, 2019

Roger Van Dellen was called home to glory and into the arms of his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at the age of 89 years after a long period of deteriorating health. Roger was born in Stitswerd, Groningen, the Netherlands and raised on the family farm. In the spring of 1952 at age 21, he left behind his entire family and immigrated alone to Canada and began working on his uncle’s farm west of Nobleford. A few years later, he attended SAIT and earned his Journeyman ticket as a mechanic and worked for Barton Motors in Picture Butte for several years. In 1962 he married Annie Teerling and they made their home in Lethbridge where Roger worked for Beny’s Chevrolet. In 1966 he was again able to pursue his farming dream with the purchase of 2 quarters of farmland west of Nobleford, in 1974 he was able to purchase another quarter of land and moved the family out to the farm. That same year he also moved to Subway Automotive where he continued to mechanic until his retirement in the 1990’s. Roger continued farming until 2006 when he and Annie retired to Lethbridge. Roger was predeceased by his wife Annie; father Rindert Van Dellen; mother Aukje Van Dellen; brothers Idzert, Thies, Jan Thies, Thies Jan Van Dellen; sisters Antje and Jantine Van Dellen. He is survived by his daughter Sheila (Gerald) Williamson of Granum; grand daughters Laura and Kimberly Williamson; son Edward (Darlene) Van Dellen of Lethbridge and grand children Katie (Tim) Ahrenholz, Kalisse (Jack) Evert, Jenaya, Judson, Kylan, Kienna, Kayden and Kyatt Van Dellen. Special thanks to Dr. Colin Walsh for the wonderful care he provided to Roger over the years. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm, on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at TRINITY REFORMED CHURCH, 1100 40 Avenue North, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Reverend Thomas Albaugh officiating.

Darlene Williams
1943 – 2019
Marcia Darlene Williams, beloved wife of Art Williams, passed away peacefully with her family by her side in Taber on Sunday, May 12, 2019 at the age of 75 years.

Darlene is survived by Art, her loving husband of fifty five years as well as her five children Tom Williams (Bonnie) of Quebec and their children Ella, Elijah, Elias, Everest, Elia, Emarie and Ehva, former daughter-in-law Debbie Duncan of Taber and their children Jaylene and Jared; Angela Williams of Taber and her son Jesse; Corry (Ken) Moline of Taber and their daughters Sam and Megan; Cheryl Williams of Calgary; Kyla Williams (Bill) of Victoria and their sons Liam, Tyler and Shane, former son-in-law Brian Bowers of Edmonton and their son Byrnes. She is also survived by her sister Georgia (Ron) Almack of Westbank and their son Craig, as well she will be remembered fondly by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
She was predeceased by her parents Tom and Mary Kerrison; parents-in-law Ken and Freda Williams.
Darlene was born September 12, 1943 in Taber. She was raised in Nelson, British Columbia but spent many summers back in Taber with family. Upon high school graduation, Darlene relocated to Lethbridge to attend Business School where she graduated at the top of her class.
On November 9, 1963, Darlene married Art, the love of her life. They made a home on the family farm outside Taber where they have remained until her passing. Darlene worked with her husband as a team on many entrepreneurial adventures. Whether it be plowing the field on the old Allis-Chalmers tractor with a baby on her knee or handling all the bookkeeping duties for anything from water hauling to a restaurant. Darlene was active in her children’s activities, serving as Chairwoman and on committees for the Taber Figure Skating Club as well as Badge Secretary for the Girl Guides for many years.
A highlight in her retirement years was an RV trip from coast to coast with her husband where she discovered how huge and beautiful this country is.
