Joyce Andreachuk

1930 – 2019

It is with profound sadness that the family of JOYCE MARIE ANDREACHUK announce her passing on May 22, 2019, at the age of 89 years. Joyce was the beloved wife for 67 years of William “Bill” Andreachuk. She was the devoted and proud mother of Lori Andreachuk (Harlow Otto), Randy Andreachuk (Pamela) and Leslie Meli (Joe). Joyce is also survived by her cherished grandchildren Lindsay Meli, Ashley Meli, Mitchell Andreachuk (Chelsea Gallagher) and her furry Coco. Joyce worked as an Executive Secretary for many years. However, her family’s needs were her top priority. She always had a welcoming and immaculate home and had many pastimes, especially reading a good book. Joyce and Bill enjoyed many winters with friends in Phoenix, Arizona. She was an avid sports and TV fan, loved watching her children and grandchildren in their many pursuits and rooting for the Blue Jays with Bill. Predeceased by her parents; and her sisters Joan and Patricia. Respecting Joyce’s wishes, a private family Celebration of Life will follow at a later date. ARIE “ART” REINDERT de GRAAF rode the last mile on his beloved Harley just before sunrise on May 20, 2019, passing away at the St. Michael’s Health Centre in Lethbridge at the age of 87.

He leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Thea; his children, Jane (Don), Sid (Mel) and Archie; his grandchildren, Tara, Sabrielle, Tori, Kaelin, Lian and great-grandchild, Bodhi.

Art was born in Julianadorp, North Holland on February 27, 1932. After marrying Thea in 1957, the young couple immigrated to Edmonton with $200 and not a word of English.

In 1968 Art brought his family to Lethbridge to supervise the construction of the the city’s first shopping mall, College (Woolco) Mall, the city’s first high rise, Frandsen Manor (now Skyline Terrace), and one of Lethbridge’s first fine-dining establishments, Hy’s Steak House (at the location of the current Montana’s). He was also involved in building countless houses and apartments throughout the city. He worked on many projects in Alberta and BC, including several schools, warehouses and the Hudson Hope Dam. Art was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, quadding, and snowmobiling. He played golf at the Country Club with his golf friends, but his real passion was motorcycles. He cherished the trips to BC and the southern U.S. with his bike buddies.

Art had a good run and proved that mileage is more important than years. Ride on Opa.

The family would like to thank the Palliative Care team including Jennifer, Celeste, Brenda and Dr. Stewart.

Frank Di Michele

1948 – 2019

Frank Robert Di Michele passed away peacefully on May 21, 2019 at the age of 70 surrounded by loved ones. Born in Cellara, Cozensa, Italy, Frank moved to Canada at the age of two with his parents Giuseppe and Teresa. He lived in Sault Ste Marie until 1998 when he and his ex-wife, Jo Anne, moved to Alberta and settled in Coalhurst. He continued his business, Honey Do Window Cleaning, until his illness made it impossible for him to do so. He loved the work but more so the people. Besides his loving partner Louisa, Frank is survived by his son Joe; grandson Matthew; brother John (Elaine); niece Cheryl Esposito (Mike) and their children; nephew John (Kara) and their children and his cousin, Anna. Frank will be remembered for his love of cooking and his big heart. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 217 – 50th Avenue, Coalhurst, Alberta.

Garrett-Blatz

Verda LaVon Garrett-Blatz of Coalhurst, Alberta passed away surrounded by her family at Chinook Regional Hospital on May 21, 2019 at the age of 76 years. She is the loving mother to Norman (Margaret) Garrett, Gary (Linda) Garrett, Keith (Christina) Garrett and Cindy Seiller. LaVon was also a devoted grandmother to Kevin, Lori, Jordon, Michelle, Kevin, Trevor, Nikki, Tiffany, Michael, Shawn, Kelly-Lynn, Taylor and 17 great grandchildren. She will be lovingly missed by her 3 brothers Roy (Suzeanne), Heber (Florence) and Glen also her sister-in-law Dorothy. She was predeceased by her parents Hyrum and Verda Pilling, her brother Elmer J. Pilling and her brother-in-law William Garrett. Friends may meet the family on Saturday, May 25, 2019 from 10:00 – 10:45 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Picture Butte Chapel, 801 Willow Avenue, Picture Butte. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. After the luncheon all are welcome to attend the interment at the Kimball Cemetery. GODLONTON

JUDITH “JUDY” ANN GODLONTON, beloved wife of Kirk Godlonton, passed away at St. Michael’s Health Centre Palliative Care Unit, on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at the age of 65 years.

Besides her husband Kirk, Judy is survived by her children Carrie (Gord) Larson of Magrath and Codey Godlonton of Lethbridge and three grandchildren: Aspen Larson (Austin) of Magrath, Mickyla Larson of Magrath and Kirk Brent Godlonton of Magrath. She is also survived by two brothers Monte (Gerrie) Shaw of Lethbridge and Tim (Shelley) Shaw of Lethbridge and Kirk’s family as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Judy was predeceased by her parents Ruby and Ernest, and an infant brother Frankie.

Judy was proud to be the Executive Director of the Lethbridge Legal Guidance Society and was honoured in 2013 with the YWCA Women of Distinction Award, for her involvement in community leadership and enhancement. She spent many hours quilting, sewing and cooking and always loved spending time with family and friends.

At Judy’s request, there will be no formal funeral service. In memory of Judy, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, #200, 325 Manning Road N.E., Calgary, AB, T2E 2P5.

HURD

PEGGY DIANNE EDWARDS HURD, of Lethbridge, Alberta, passed away at age 57 from cancer, on May 21, 2019, in Saint Michael’s Palliative Care Center. She is survived by her husband Bob Hurd, her 5 children; Stephanie (Dennis) Jones, Melanie (Aaron) Nalder, Selena (Michael) Atkins, Wesley Hurd (fiancé Sam Kolasko), Bradley Hurd, her 2 grandchildren; Beckett Atkins and Valerie Jones, her 3 siblings; Terry (Melynda) Edwards, Julie (Randy) Fajnor, Greg (Tina) Edwards. She helped raise Sarah Bisgaard (fiancé Daylen Tidmarsh). She also loved Bob’s 5 children and 11 grandchildren from his first marriage. Peggy was born on September 9, 1961 to Clarence and Jane Edwards in Lethbridge at Saint Michael’s Hospital. After a short time in California her family moved back to Barnwell. She went to school in Barnwell and Taber. Then, following her older brother’s example, went to Rick’s College and BYU, completing a degree in chemistry. She was working at the Research Station when she met Bob at a Single’s function in Taber. She loved math and tutored high school students as a part time job while raising her own children. She was very active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints always magnifying her calling and reaching out to help others. Her favourite calling was teaching early morning Seminary and was very saddened when her illness became too debilitating to let her continue. The Funeral is on Friday, May 31, 2019 at 10:30 am in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, COPPERWOOD CHAPEL, 9 Keystone Terrace West, Lethbridge. There will be a lunch provided. The burial is in Barnwell at 2:30pm.

LANDERYOU

It is with great sadness that family and friends announce the passing of JOHN CHARLES LANDERYOU at St. Therese Villa on May 14, 2019 at the age of 93 years.

John is survived by his loving wife, Betty and five children: Pat Lichter, Jack Landeryou, Susan Supina, Gordon (Jen) Landeryou and Karen Landeryou, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, John & Emma Landeryou, his stepmother, Ruth Landeryou and his three sisters, Hazel (Jim) Lemoal, Juanita (Bill) McNabb and Joan (Steve) Suetta.

John was born in St. Louis, Missouri on July 13, 1925. He served in the American Air Force during World War II. John met and married the love of his life, Betty, in 1947.

After graduating from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Commerce, he sold life insurance in Toronto for ten years. Later, he moved to Lethbridge and taught at Winston Churchill High School for 26 years.

He will be fondly remembered for his love of playing Bridge, as he was a Life Master at it. This pursuit, along with many fishing trips, filled much of his retirement.

Cremation has been entrusted to Cornerstone Funeral Home.

A Family Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

ORTLIEB

KAREN JANE ORTLIEB, of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully in her sleep at St. Michael’s Health Centre on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at the age of 56, after a brave and quiet battle with cancer.

She is lovingly remembered by her dear companion and best friend of 29 years, Dennis Stringam, her stepdaughters, Stacey (Chad) Lysak and Chelsea Stringam (Jeff Ainscough) and grandchild, Rosealynn. She is also survived by her parents, Walter & Violet Ortlieb, her brothers, Ronald (Jodie) Ortlieb and Kevin Ortlieb, her nieces and nephew, Amber, Leslie, Ashley and Jason (Russet) Ortlieb and grandnieces, Gracie, Hannah, Alexandria and Lucy.

Karen was born on March 22, 1963 in Edmonton to Walter & Violet Ortlieb. She instantly became their beloved daughter as well as a beloved sister to Ronald and Kevin – her twin. She worked in the family business, Classic Carpets, for 26 years.

Karen loved nature; she would spend time watching and nurturing the wild rabbits and birds in her yard. She especially loved her dog, Buddy, who predeceased her. Gardening – specifically flowers – was a passionate hobby. History and politics were also areas of interest that sparked both learning and dynamic conversations.

Karen loved to travel; specifically, she enjoyed the time she spent in Kauai with Dennis, as well as a Mediterranean cruise with her mom. She travelled with her family to her parents’ homeland, Germany in 1972.

Furthermore, Karen enjoyed working with her hands. She crocheted, baked and experimented with many recipes and was generous in sharing her creations. This past Christmas, she crocheted beautiful Christmas stockings for each of her nephew’s children and had already begun working on their Christmas gifts for 2019. In the end, Karen’s family sparked much joy as she shared her talents and gifts.

A Celebration of Karen’s Life will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Monday, May 27, 2019 at 2:00 P.M.

Interment will follow at the Mountain View Cemetery.

Gerald Pierson
1945 – 2019

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a father, grandfather, brother and son, Gerald Grant Pierson, at home in Coaldale on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at the age of 74 years. Gerald was a strong and proud man who ferociously battled adversity and illness in the final years of his life.

Gerald is survived by his children Kimberley (Gregory) Wikenheiser of Lethbridge and their children Zachary and Delaney; Cam Pierson of Coaldale; Chad Pierson of Coaldale and his children Terry, Tristan and Haylee. He is also survived by his Mother Lavern Pierson of Taber; brothers Joel (Marilyn) Pierson of Lethbridge and Roy (Barb) Pierson of Taber; brother-in-law Robert (Marilyn) Perini of Carsland; sister-in-law Gloria Frizzell of Vancouver, British Columbia; mother-in-law Kay Biholar of Taber and by numerous nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased by his wife June Pierson, father Ray Pierson and father-in-law John Biholar.
Gerald was born in Taber in 1945, where he resided during his formative years. He met his soulmate June and they married in 1967. Soon after, they began a family and moved to Calgary.
Gerald was a hard worker and was promoted quickly within the Revelstoke Concrete Company. In 1981 he had the opportunity to move back to his roots and take over the Lethbridge office. The family settled in Coaldale and began a new chapter. After a fire destroyed the Revelstoke plant, he moved on to become the Dispatch Foreman at Lafarge and remained there until his retirement.
His hard work paid off and he and June were able to golf all summer and to become ‘snowbirds’ in the winter. They made many wonderful friends throughout their life together and created amazing memories, which he cherished.
Gerald was an active and proud father and grandfather, spending many hours coaching, teaching and playing with his children and grandchildren. He took wonderful care of his family and could always be counted on to fix what needed repair. He was not one to sit idle. Gerald was a boxer and a boxing coach, raced cars , coached hockey and baseball. He was the family mechanic, plumber, carpenter and electrician. He loved and hated to golf.
Gerald was loved and will be greatly missed by all.

Emma Schigelski

1920 – 2019

Mrs. Emma Schigelski of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Mr. John Schigelski (1993) passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, May 20, 2019 at the age of 98. Emma was born into a Christian family to Johann and Adeline Wellert on July 14, 1920, one of five sisters and 4 brothers. In 1950 Emma immigrated from Germany to Canada where she married her loving husband, John Schigelski. Together they farmed in Wrentham and in 1962 they purchased a farm in the Magrath area and moved there in 1964. It was a picture- perfect place where they took a lot of pride in building and maintaining the farmstead. They loved to travel and went to many places around the world. In 1986 they retired and moved to their new home in Lethbridge where they made many new friends. Emma enjoyed her garden, flowers, needlepoint and crocheting. She was a meticulous housekeeper and great cook as she invited the entire neighborhood to visit and eat at their home. She enjoyed company and loved to entertain. Emma loved her Lord and was actively involved in the Lutheran Church. In February 2003, Emma moved into her condo where she met more friends and continued to entertain. Then in 2011 she moved into Sunrise Village where she made even more new friends. Due to failing health, in July 2017 Emma moved to St. Therese Villa where she resided until her passing. The family is grateful to the staff of St. Therese for the care she received. Emma is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Flowers are gratefully declined.
