Victor Arvay

1933 – 2019

It is with great sadness that the family of Victor Arvay, beloved husband of Elsie Arvay, announce his passing, on October 8, 2019, at the age of 85 years, in Lethbridge, Alberta. Victor was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, October 28, 1933 and resided in Saskatchewan his whole life until moving to Lethbridge in 2006 to be closer to his grandchildren and son/ daughter in-law. He started his career on the farm. Farming and discussing farming was a passion throughout his life. While living in Yorkton Victor worked at RAM industries, City Taxi, and ended his career as a city bus driver for Westerhaug Bus lines. He enjoyed his job as a bus driver and interacting with the public. Victor was a giving man and would always lend a helping hand to others. He loved watching sports like football (Riders), hockey (Canucks) and even wrestling. Victor was funny, loved to socialize and enjoyed his outings to the casino. He truly relished his retirement years. Besides his loving wife Elsie, Victor is survived by his son Sheldon Arvay, Sheldon’s wife Nicole, and grandchildren Zoe and Lyrek Arvay of Lethbridge; as well as numerous brother/sister in-laws, nephews/nieces and their families. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00pm, on Friday, October 11, 2019, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610- 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta.

BULL SHIELDS

JORDAN PATRICK BULL SHIELDS, of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully with friends and family by his side at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Thursday, October 3, 2019 at the age of 39 years.

CAMPBELL

It is with many heavy hearts we announce the passing of CHARMAINE CAMPBELL (nee Agnew) on September 24, 2019.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 26 years, Phil Proust; son Sandy (Monique) and their children Alax and J’Lynn; daughter Tammy (Paul) and their son Mike (Kendal); brother Earl (Deneen); her many dear nieces and nephews as well as her cherished fur babies, Casey and Suzy.

Charmaine was welcomed with open arms and reunited with her mom, dad and siblings: Tommy, Barry, Bobbi and Mary Anne.

Char was born in Invermere, BC on August 19, 1951 to parents, Wayne and Marjorie Agnew. She grew up in Canal Flats which she considered her home to this day. She had a passion for life and family and had her own unique relationship with every person. Char loved to cook and bake and always shared her recipes (unless they were her dads). She made sure to give many goodies and care packages away.

Char had a contagious smile and laugh, a sense of humour that would either make you laugh hysterically or go beat red from embarrassment. She was a wonderful listener, brutally honest, full of information and spoke her mind but always found a nice way of saying it.

Char enjoyed keeping in contact with everyone via text message and everyone enjoyed receiving them. She found joy in camping and Sunday drives with a picnic. OH! and an ice cold Kokanee on any day of the week.

Her passing has left a huge hole in many lives and a love like hers will never be replaced. Char will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.

At this time there will be no funeral service. A family celebration will follow at a later date.

CODD

SHIRLEY CODD, 84, of Lethbridge, passed away October 8, 2019, with her family by her side.

Left to mourn her passing are her husband Ken and her four children; daughter Connie (Jim) of Lethbridge, son Lorrie of Glenwood, son Terry (Linda) of Red Deer, son Ken Jr. (Terri) of Lethbridge; sister Colleen Masson of Lethbridge; one brother-in-law Tom (Sharon) of High River, along with 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents Vede and Audrey Bennion, three sisters and two brothers.

Most of Shirley’s working career was with the Alberta government – first with AGT, then working at the Alberta Treasury Branch bank in Cardston, Alberta for 24 years. She was also a lead hand on the ranch, helping her husband Ken, especially at calving time.

Shirley was immensely proud of her family, and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories. Her family meals were legendary and she loved to feed all those who dropped by the farm. She was a wonderful friend, mentor, mother, wife, and grandmother.

Shirley will be sadly missed by all those who knew her. May you rest in peace. God be with you until we meet again.

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, October 15th, at 11:00 am at Legacy Funeral Home in Cardston, AB (107 – 6th Street West).

FOX

BERNICE JOAN FOX (Singing in the Water – “Iitsooyainihkii”), beloved wife of the late Floyd Charles Fox (“Kayiihtsipikkimaan” – Spotted Eagle Feather) from Kainai, passed away peacefully at the Edith Cavell Care Centre on Monday, October 7, 2019 at the age of 86 years old. Bernice will be called home to her parents, Isabel and Jim Big Throat; husband, Floyd Fox; eldest son, Clement Fox and her youngest daughter and baby, Melody Fox; grandsons, Jamie Robin Fox and Kendall Charles Fox; and her brother Roland Big Throat, also Roland Jr. Big Throat, Jim Big Throat, Jimmy Shot Both Sides and all her relations who have gone home to Creator before her.

Bernice was born on March 31, 1933 at the Blood Indian Hospital, to her parents the late Isabel (Berry Child) and Jim Big Throat. Bernice grew up in Browning, Montana where her mother Isabel was born. Bernice also grew up on her father’s reservation – the Blood Indian Reserve. Bernice received her education from the St. Albert Convent as well as the Mount Royal College, where she studied Early Childhood Education. Excelling in her studies, Bernice was often called upon to assist her college instructors with teaching the program. Bernice was a certified florist, creating beautiful floral arrangements for many people in the various Southern Alberta communities. Bernice was a very skilled seamstress, meanwhile teaching others various skills such as sewing, crocheting, knitting and baking. Bernice loved taking care of her family as a homemaker, sewing for her children and cooking for everyone. Bernice also had a deep love for music, as she played several instruments including: violin, organ, piano, guitar and accordion; thereby, ensuring her three sons followed in her footsteps attaining their own musical and artistic abilities. In another area of her career pathway, Bernice maintained a position with Indian Affairs as a Native Liaison Case Worker, supporting families and children, in addition to working as a reporter for Kainai News. Bernice was close with her siblings and had many wonderful memories raising their children together and socializing with her sisters. The matriarchal bond Bernice shared with her sisters, she carried forward with many cherished moments, and time spent visiting with her daughters and granddaughters.

As a child, Bernice was involved in athletics as a fast cross country runner and accomplished horsewoman. Bernice loved competing in many rodeos as a champion barrel racer, winning two I.R.C.A. Championship titles in 1964 and 1967 with her horse, Buttons. Bernice was also a skilled racehorse trainer in Fort Benton, Montana, alongside her husband, Floyd and her father Jim. One of Bernice’s most memorable trips was traveling with her family into California through to the Redwood Forest and further on to see the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Bernice had a very friendly and sociable personality, making many friends wherever she travelled. She loved to laugh and tell jokes with her family and friends, and always had a twinkle in her eyes and a kind smile to everyone she met. Bernice was a confident, creative, gifted, smart and strong Blackfeet/Blackfoot woman – who always worked hard throughout her lifetime taking care of her children/grandchildren and spending time with her many grandchildren. She was a devout Catholic who dedicated her faith and prayers especially to the Rosary and the Blessed Virgin Mother Mary. Bernice was a fluent Blackfoot speaker and proud of her Blackfoot culture and heritage.

Bernice is survived by sons: Gordon Alex Fox (Mary), Eugene Fox; daughters Anna-Joyce Frank (Randy Frank), Marsha Fox, Carmen Fox (Mike Low), and Cheryle Fox. Grandchildren: Shane Little Bear (Sherry), Corey Fox, Jan Fox, Alex Fox-North Peigan; Lennie Fox, Shaneen Fox (Neal Thunder Chief), Andrea True Joy Fox; Shayla Shot Both Sides; Kristian Frank (Tyler Goodstriker), Karmen Frank; Logan Fox, Dylan Fox, Rory Fox, Zachariah Fox, Noah Fox; Terrelle Fox-Grey, Elizabeth Fox-Grey, Eden Fox-Grey; Jobe Fox, Julienn Fox-King. Siblings: Verna Fox, Joanne Davis-Spearson, Frisco Little Light, Eugene Creighton, Randy Bottle, and Carrie First Rider; sister in-law, Peggy Big Throat, also Fabian (Trish) Shot Both Sides, LeeAnne (Darcy) Russelle, Lorand (Kelly Marie) Big Throat, Desi (Julie) Big Throat, Rolanda Big Throat.*We would like to make special mention of one of her best friends throughout her lifetime, Lena Russell.

We would also like to acknowledge the love Bernice had for her many great-grand children, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends from the Blood Tribe and Browning, Montana.

A Family Service will be held at Legacy Funeral Home, Cardston on Friday, October 11th, from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. followed by the Wake Service at Legacy Funeral Home from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Blood Reserve on Saturday, October 12th at 11:00 a.m. Interment in the Blood Band Cemetery.

Leonard Kirsch

1927 – 2019

Mr. Leonard Kirsch of Shaughnessy, beloved husband of the late Mrs. Elizabeth Kirsch, passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital on Monday, October 7, 2019 at the age of 92 years. Leo was born in Emiuke, Ukraine on January 9, 1927 to Leopold and Olga Kirsch. Leo’s father was taken from the family when Leo was very young, leaving Leo, his mother and 3 sisters to provide for themselves. After living in Poland for a few months they escaped to Leinburg Hyde in Germany. In 1953, Leo and his family immigrated to Canada residing in the Picture Butte area. On April 18, 1961, Leo married Elizabeth, and on December 31, 1965, their son Reinhold was born. Leo was a hard-working man. When first arriving in Canada, he hoed beets for local farmers. Shortly after, be built his own home and then years later built his second home which he resided in until his passing. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects from 10:00am to 11:00am on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 STREET SOUTH, Lethbridge, Alberta. MACKAY

ALAN FREDERICK MACKAY, beloved husband of Evelyn MacKay, passed away peacefully at the Prairie Ridge Good Samaritans Society in Raymond, AB on Monday, October 7, 2019 at the age of 85 years.

Alan is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn, and their children; daughter Connie (Dave) Carlson, their children, Jason (Meghan) Davis (and their children, Mercedes, Auston and Tucker) and Curtis (Cynthia) Davis (and their daughter, Addison); son Kal MacKay; and son Dennis (Cheri Beech) MacKay (and their son, Bryce MacKay).

He was predeceased by his parents, George & Alice MacKay, his older brother, Bill and Bill’s wife, Margaret. Also gone before him is his oldest son, Wesley MacKay, who passed away while on a peace time tour of duty with the Royal Canadian Airforce Snow Birds.

Alan was the second son born to George & Alice MacKay in Turner Valley, AB on February 11, 1934. He attended Mercury School and South Turner Valley High School in Royalties, AB. After his high school graduation in 1951, he enrolled in Electrical Technologies at the Provincial Institute of Technology & Art in Calgary, which he completed in 1954.

He met his beloved Evelyn at a dance hosted by the Institute, and the couple was married on August 10, 1955. Alan went on to work for Calgary Power after his schooling until 1958, at which point he and Evelyn moved back to her family’s farm. In 1964, he started again with Calgary Power—known as Transalta today—and worked there until his retirement in 1991.

Alan & Evelyn’s retirement years were spent traveling and doing the hobbies they enjoyed. For Alan, those hobbies were leather work, lapidary and wood carving—he excelled at all three. Alan’s last years were spent with Evelyn at Prairie Ridge Lodge in Raymond, AB.

Alan was known and loved by many and he will be sadly missed.

A Funeral Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Marion Martin officiating.

He will be laid to rest in the summer of 2020.
