Evelyn “Adele” Cotton, beloved wife of Roland Cotton, passed away on October 30, 2019 at the age of 79 Years. A Family Service will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Thursday November 7, 2019 at Eden’s Funeral Home, 2424 5th Ave, Fort Macleod, followed by a wake service between 7:00 P.M. and 11:00 P.M. at White Calf Hall, Stand Off, Alberta. 1934 – 2019

It is with deep sorrow and sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our loving Husband and Dad, Willi Geworsky of Lethbridge, Alberta, on Friday, November 1, 2019 at the age of 85 years.

Willi is survived by his wife Erika; daughter Rose (Dave Blair); sister Lydia Granson and brother in law William (Hedwig) Littau as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

JACOBUS JOCHEM “JAKE” GROENENBOOM

It is with gratitude for a life well-lived and a man much loved that we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather and great-grand father, JAKE GROENENBOOM at St. Therese Villa on October 31, 2019 at the age of 88 years.

Jake is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Betsie. He will be lovingly remembered by his five children: Martha (Rick) Johnson, Barb (Jim) McDonald, Rob (Linda) Groenenboom, Don (Elaine) Groenenboom and Sue (Mark) Wobick. He will also be dearly missed by his 13 grandchildren: Blake (Sarah), Brett (Michelle); Scott (Stephanie), Mike, Tyson; Nicole (Cory), Megan (Chris), Taylor (Hannah); Jed, Emily, Haley; Brynn and Carter, as well as his six great-grandchildren.

Jake was born on May 7, 1931 in Barendrecht, Netherlands. He was the eldest of 12 children who—along with their parents—immigrated to Canada in 1952. After working on several southern Alberta farms, the Groenenboom family was able to purchase their own farm in the Park Lake area.

Shortly after, Jake met the love of his life, Betsie. They married on August 27, 1960 and purchased their own farm west of Park Lake. In 1972, Jake & Betsie and their family moved to the farm west of Nobleford where they remained until 2009. Jake was a farmer, drywaller and later on in life pursued his true passion as a buyer in the cattle industry. Jake’s favorite hobby was his garden—he grew enough vegetables to feed his own family as well as a small village. He loved to sit out on a chair and watch his garden grow. With Jake’s gradual decline in health, they made the decision to move to Lethbridge. Jake was moved to St. Therese Villa in 2013 where he was lovingly cared for until his passing.

Jake could always be found seated in the front row of the many auction marts he attended. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, travelling, playing cards, and sitting in the backyard barbecuing that always perfect steak. Jake was very proud of his family and loved spending time with them. His grandchildren always put a big smile on his face.

Jake is also survived by his brother, Dan (Riet) Groenenboom, his sisters Jean deKreek, Henny Wiskerke, Ria (Joe) Fedyniak, Janny (Keith) Nugent, Truus Bolokoski, Cobie (Andrew) Oosterbroek, and Mieke (Bob) Rice, his sisters-in-law Margaret, Betty and Leny Groenenboom.

He was predeceased by his parents Huib and Marie Groenenboom, in-laws Marinus and Christina Wiskerke, his brothers Bas, Joe, and Huib Groenenboom, his brother-in-laws Marvin Bolokoski, Ad deKreek, Huib Wiskerke, and Casey Wiskerke.

A Funeral Service will be held at ST. ANDREWS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1818 – 5 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 12:00 Noon.

Prior to the Funeral Service, Jake will be laid to rest during a Private Interment in Mountain View Cemetery.

Diana “Diny” Hummel

1930 – 2019

DIANA (DINY) HUMMEL (nee MOES), beloved wife, mother, grandma and great grandma, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at the age of 89 years. Diny was born April 9, 1930 at home in Zuidwolde, Drenthe, the Netherlands. As a young girl and teenager, she worked on the family farm milking cows and helping with chores during the Second World War. In 1950, she sailed across the Atlantic Ocean with the Guichelaar family and worked as their nanny. When this family returned to Holland a year later, Diny stayed in Canada and worked as a housekeeper for the Lyons family in Barons. She was an avid seamstress and enjoyed knitting and crocheting; donating many of her hand-made items to various charities including Blankets for Canada and Immanuel Christian Schools. Diny married Willem (Bill) Hummel, her childhood sweetheart on May 17, 1951. Together they raised seven children on the family farm near Nobleford and worked side by side for many years. Diny is survived by her loving husband Bill of 68 years, children Lucas (Lamkje) and their children Jeremy (Kristi), Daniel (Moira), Joel (Rachel), Karla, Elizabeth (Justin) Den Toom and Emily (Kelsey) Bolink; Albert (Ellen) and their children Christopher (Lindsay), Edward (Mandy), Jodi (James Ebrey) and Andrew (Jessica); son-in-law Martin Meindertsma and children David (Vala) Meindertsma and Jolene (Robert) Lawrence; William; Bryan (Wendy) and their children Rachel and Mikaela; Jim (Carol) and their children Ainsley and Kaitlyn; and Tim (Benita) and their children Dayna (Nick) Hawkeye, Jaime (Taylen) Oancia, Michael (Sianna) and Matthew. As well as, 27 great grandchildren in whom she found great joy and pleasure. She is also survived by in-laws Roeli Moes of Edmonton, Joyce Moes of Westlock, Alice Moes of Calgary, Case and Tita Hummel of Diamond City, Lucas and Susan Hummel of Nobleford, Roelof Hummel of the Netherlands and many nieces and nephews in Canada, The United States and Holland. She was pre-deceased by her son Quincy, daughter Wilma Meindertsma, great-granddaughter Makenna Meindertsma, her parents and many brothers, sisters and in-laws. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at the Nobleford Christian Reformed Church, 522 Highway Avenue – Nobleford, Alberta. JOHNSON

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of DANIEL R. JOHNSON, beloved husband of Janis Johnson, of Lethbridge, on Saturday, November 2, 2019, at the age of 74 years.

Besides his loving wife Janis, Daniel will be remembered by his three children: Dona Johnson (Mark Tysowski) of Calgary, Chad (Anita) Johnson of Regina and Robert (Amy) Johnson of Regina; 19 grandchildren: Jack, Evan and Zoe Tysowski, Jessica (Josiah) Audette, Rebecca (Micaiah) Audette, Amanda, Julia, Erica, Maria, Daniel, Nathan, Joel and Johanna Johnson and Hannah, Emanuella, Eden, Laylah, Evangeline and Lydia Johnson; and three great-grandchildren: Chas, Raymond and Sabrina. He is also survived by his sister Eileen (Stan) Sundberg of Spearfish, South Dakota and Brian Johnson of Regina as well as several nieces and nephews, numerous cousins and more friends than we can mention.

Daniel was predeceased by his parents Sanford and Julia and brother Wesley.

Danny was born January 25, 1945 in Estevan, SK. He was raised on the family farm near Radville, SK. At the age of ten, his family moved to the current farm at Beaubier, SK, which he passionately took care of till the end.

Dan found Janis, the love of his life in 1966. It was clearly the most successful cold call of his life and he closed the deal in 1968. Dan went on to forge a very successful business and sales career, making so many friends along the way. He enjoyed playing sports, and cheered for the Yankees, Canadiens, and the Cowboys. But he cherished people the most; friends, family and especially all his grandchildren. But above all, he loved Jesus, his saviour, knowing with all certainty that he was going to meet Him and be reunited with his parents and little brother Wesley who he has waited so long to see.

A Funeral Service will be held at EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH OF LETHBRIDGE, 4717 – 24 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Dave Acree officiating. A Private family Interment will take place in Beaubier, SK at a later date.

Cornelius Plett, of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Ramona passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2019 at Good Samaritans Society (Park Meadows Village) in Lethbridge at the age of 84 years; 3 days short of his 85th birthday. SPITZER

1927 – 2019

SUSAN LOUISE SPITZER (née Messmer), beloved wife of the late Walter Spitzer, passed away at St. Michael’s Health Centre due to complications from a stroke on Thursday, October 31, 2019 at the age of 92 years.

Susan is survived by her children: Sharon (John) Davis, Robert (Myra) Spitzer, Ronald (Emma) Spitzer and Barbara (Ronald) Angyal; nine grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren; sister Barb Fisher of Calgary and brother Joe (Shirley) Messmer of Mississauga, Ontario as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her loving husband Walter, Susan was predeceased by her daughter Loralie, parents Michael and Barbara, sisters Litvena Peters and Mary Tittle, four brothers Dominick, Leo, Lawrence and Alphonse Messmer and many sisters and brothers-in-law.

Susan was born in Senate, Saskatchewan on January 28, 1927 to Michael and Barbara Messmer. She was the sixth of nine children and attended elementary school in Senate and Consul, completing Grade 12 in Foremost, Alberta. After her schooling, she began working as an uncertified nursing aid at St. Michael’s Hospital in Lethbridge. She met her future husband Walter at a dance and they were married on October 28, 1946. They had celebrated 52 years together before Walter passed on September 11, 1999.

Susan and Walter settled in north Lethbridge and raised five children. Susan worked various places, including Crystal Dairy, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Canada Safeway, and when Walter suffered a brain aneurysm in 1970, she went back to school, taking Secretarial Training at Henderson Business College. After college, she was employed at Empress Foods, working for 11 years. She retired to spend more time with Walter camping, fishing and travelling (Las Vegas and Wendover) before Walter became wheelchair bound. They sold the house in 1999 and moved to Grandview Condominiums. In 2012 when Susan felt she needed more assistance with daily living, she moved to Black Rock Terrace where she made many new friends.

Susan was a devout Catholic and a life member of the CWL. She was a terrific cook and could make the food stretch to feed all the hungry mouths at the supper table. She’ll be remembered for her spudnuts, cream puffs, cottage cheese perogies, and goose with rice dressing. In the winter she even enjoyed barbequing hamburgers on the deck for their poodle Benji. Susan loved to shoot darts and won many trophies. She always had a Harlequin book on her end table and loved to play crib and bingo with her friends at Blackrock. Fridays became her favorite day as her daughter Barb would pick her up from her apartment and they’d do shopping, lunch, and trips to the casino. Having her nails professionally done was also a highlight of Susan’s month. She loved being pampered.

The family would like to thank the health professionals at Chinook Regional Hospital, Milk River Long Term Care and St. Michael’s Health Centre Long Term Care for making Mom comfortable over the past nine months. We are forever grateful for the kindness shown to her.

A Funeral Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB on Thursday, November 7, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. with Deacon Frank Peta officiating. A Private Family Interment will take place immediately following the service at Mountain View Cemetery.
