Fast start carries U of L women

A fast start and a strong finished paced the University of Lethbridge
Pronghorns women to an 84-67 victory over the Brandon Bobcats in
Canada West women’s basketball action Friday night.
Horns started the game on a 10-0 run before Brandon answered back to
narrow the margin to 18-14 after the first quarter.
After Brandon got within two points midway through the second quarter,
the Horns went on a 12-0 run to extend their lead at the half to 37-26.
The Horns then held the Bobcats scoreless for over three minutes to
start the fourth quarter before the Bobcats battled back, outscoring
Lethbridge in the final frame.
Jessica Haenni led the Pronghorns with 22 points on eight-of-10
shooting twos and two-for-four from beyond the arc. Kacie Bosch was
next with 15 points on six-of-seven shooting from two and one-of-two
from three, while also contributing seven steals.
Alexa Pobitzer followed with 12 points while Katie Keith had eight
points and 12 rebounds as every player hit the scoresheet.
Overall, Horns shot 56.4 per cent from the floor, 50 per cent from
beyond the arc and 71 per cent from the line.
The Horns outrebounded the Bobcats 33-29.
The win improves Lethbridge’s record to 2-1, while Brandon remains
winless at 0-3.
In men’s action, the Pronghorns fell to 0-3 after a 103-89 loss to
the Bobcats.
Horns trailed 28-24 after one quarter and were down 50-41 at the half.
Chad Oviatt and Keanu Funa led the Horns with 21 points apiece and
Oviatt also chipped in with 10 rebounds. Jeffrey Rodehutskors was next
with 14 points while Colton Gibb added 11.
Horns shot 43 per cent from the field and only hit on six of 26 three-
point attempts.
The two teams meet again tonight in Brandon with the women’s game at
5 p.m. and the men to follow at 7 p.m. local time.
