BRYAN HARRIS

March 1, 1942 – December 1, 2019

Season Four of the “Life of Bryan Harris” concluded on December 1st, 2019 to really good reviews! Season One started off a little slow on March 1st 1942 when Bryan was born but got more interesting in Season two when he first experienced international travel in 1961 as an LDS Missionary in the storied country of France. Season Three started in 1964 where he quietly conducted the highs, lows, and steady notes of the newly released “Life’s Opera” performed by his beautiful wife Ann with a supporting cast of five young actors: Steven, Lisa, Kerry, Wendy and Barbara. Season Four was the most compelling as he maneuvered the peaks and valleys of life with multiple endeavours settling on the undulating Prairies of Taber, Alberta where his family’s farmland was now clothed by him in the silent power of the crops of his day. Bryan appeared to dominate no scene yet this gentle giant drew all eyes; then smiles and a familiar peace that comes from someone who can protect when necessary and comfort with grace when it is required. He loved humour and, had the script have allowed it, more would have known he was a great thinker, writer and poet. Always drawn to the theatre, movies became a destination he took all he loved on and also showed that, as no respecter of persons, he could shake a popcorn bag that left you feeling like you were sitting in D-Box! He was a faithful man and a humble servant who lead by example. Throughout the entirety of his life he was a firm and unshakable member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was loved and adored by his children, grandchildren, and all who knew him. He was a great supporting actor who stood behind many successes who will carry on his legacy in this life. He was a true man filled with love, kindness, gentleness, and a steady resolve to do good, he was a “Man for all Seasons”. Mrs. Lily Campbell of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Mr. Frederick Keith Campbell, passed away at Good Samaritans West Highlands on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at the age of 79 years. Lily will be privately remembered by family and friends.

Richard Chase

1946 – 2019

Mr. Richard Allen Chase, beloved husband of Alice Chase, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on November 26, 2019. He was born at the Galt Hospital in Lethbridge, Alberta, to I.L and Thora Chase of Masinasin, Alberta. He was raised on the family farm and attended school in Masinasin and Erle Rivers High School in Milk River. Richard continued his studies at the University of Lethbridge, graduating with a B.Ed in library science, awarded with distinction, and receiving the William Aberhart Gold Medal in Education. He began his teaching career in 1969 at Lakeview Elementary School where he was the teacher-librarian. He guided countless students and teachers with his expansive knowledge of books and technology. Richard loved the land, enjoying farming with his parents and exploring the many wonderful features of the Sweet Grass Hills and Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park. Richard and Alice (Turnbull) were married on December 23, 1970, at McKillop United Church. In 1976 they purchased property in the Gladstone Valley west of Pincher Creek and enjoyed its beauty for 42 years. Richard was a passionate advocate for children’s literature. In 2001, upon his retirement from Lakeview School, he began to promote the best of Canadian literature for young children through the Children’s Literature Roundtable, the Canadian Children’s Book Center, and the Rocky Mountain Book Award: The Alberta Children’s Choice Book Award Program. He hosted many outstanding Canadian authors in Lethbridge and often made arrangements to send them to small or remote schools and libraries that would not otherwise have had an opportunity to interact with a “real author” Richard is survived by his wife, Alice; his sister Wendy (Derek) Baron and their children Cam and Ryan; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Bev and Ed Potter; his niece Cathy Burke and her children Jillian (Jarett) and Ethan; and his nephew Trevor Potter (Becky Eckert) and their children Sophie and Naomi. Also surviving Richard are his brother-in-law Gordon Turnbull; his sister-in-law Carol-Ann Turnbull; his niece Shannon Scherger (Ken) and her children Tyler and Tomas; and Curtis (Nanette) Turnbull and their children Kimberly, Kelly and Dyllan. He was predeceased by his parents, Alice’s parents Annie and W.J. (Bill) Turnbull, and his brother-in-law Rodney Turnbull. A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at 11:00am, on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at the MCKILLOP UNITED CHURCH, 2329 15 Ave S, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Reverend Trevor Potter and Reverend Rebekah Eckert presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice or to the Rocky Mountain Book Award (RMBA), c/o Box 42 Station Main, Lethbridge, Alberta T1V 3Y4, to assist in the continued promotion of quality Canadian children’s literature, a cause to which Richard was deeply committed. A private family Graveside Service will be held prior in the Mountain View Cemetery.

MARTIN SAMUEL ENTZ, beloved husband of Paulina Entz, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital, on Sunday, December 1, 2019 at the age of 62 years.

GLENN HARDING

August 26, 1937 to November 30, 2019

The world just got a little less funny and amazing. Glenn Harding passed away quietly in his sleep on Saturday, November 30 at the age of 82. He is lovingly and eternally connected to his lovely wife Loyia; children Robert (Bonnie) Harding, Denise (Tyler) Mandin, Michael (Jaime) Harding, Janet (David) Thurgood, Carma (Rob) Leishman; parents William (Bill) and Jennie Harding; siblings Blaine (Martha) Harding, Joan (George) Taylor, Jim Harding, David (Gail) Harding, Keith (Kathy) Harding, Brenda Peoples; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends. He was predeceased by those indicated in italics above. Glenn was born in Taber and spent his life working on the family farm on Horsefly Road where he later raised his own family. He and Loyia had a bond that transcends time, and we take great comfort in the fact that they are now reunited for eternity. The funeral will take place on Saturday, December 7 at 11:00 A.M. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Taber Stake Centre (4709 50 Avenue, Taber, AB). TANAKA

TOSHIKO TANAKA died December 2, 2019 after a brief illness. Born November 22, 1918, she had just celebrated her 101st birthday.

She was predeceased by her husband Genye “Gene.” She is survived by her six children: Tomiye “Tammy” Tanaka of New York City, Eichi (Betty) Tanaka of Lethbridge; Masaye Tanaka of Calgary; David (Linda) Tanaka, Dorene Gordon and Terry Tanaka, all of Lethbridge; five grandchildren (Darcee Richardson, Kelly (Jeanne) Tanaka, Nikki Gordon, Dionne Gordon, Tracey (Ron) Parent; six great grandchildren (Anthony Richardson, Kristen Richardson, Victoria (Curtis) Doeve, Kynan Gordon, Kaiden Tanaka, Dylan Tanaka) and two great-great grandchildren (Drea Doeve, Mia Doeve). She was predeceased by siblings Shoji Koyata, Natsuko Sawada, Minoru Koyata and Hikoza Koyata and is survived by three siblings; Takeshi “Ted” Koyata of Lethbridge; Fumiko Sekiya of Edmonton and Isamu “Sam” Koyata of Toronto; and many nieces and nephews.

Toshiko’s parents, Takejiro and Isa Koyata, immigrated to Alberta from Japan in the early 1900s and homesteaded along the Milk River Ridge south of Raymond, Alberta. Toshiko was born there, the oldest of nine Koyata children. She attended public school at Mammoth, at two-room school on the prairies. In later years she completed her high school education.

When Toshiko was 17 she was working as a cook for a threshing crew when one of the young workers caught her eye. That young man, Genye “Gene” Tanaka, would become her husband and partner for life. They were married and raised six children. In the early 1960s the Tanakas moved to Lethbridge and Toshiko joined the urban workforce. She became a diet clerk with the Lethbridge Municipal Hospital, a position she held until her retirement.

Growing up when the western prairies were still new, Toshiko developed an independent and optimistic spirit, traits she held all her life and something she tried to pass on to her children. As a child of Japanese immigrants, she always managed to hold in perfect balance her love of Canadian lifestyle and her respect for Japanese traditions. For many years she demonstrated a little-known Japanese artform called bonseki (sand painting) during Heritage Days and at the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, she performed traditional Japanese dancing and was a member of the Momiji Dance Group in Lethbridge, and created Japanese flower arrangements (Ikebana) for the Nikka Yuko pavilion for many years.

Toshiko was a member of the Southern Alberta Writers’ Workshop in the 1990s and her stories of life on the prairies appear in the published volume Prairie Patchwork Two. She also wrote a series of articles on the life of Japanese-Canadians in southern Alberta for Toronto-based Japanese Canadian newspapers. She was also on the organizing committee for Nishiki, a book documenting the history of the Japanese-Canadian experience in Southern Alberta.

Funeral Services will be held Friday December 6, 2019 at 11:00 am at the BUDDHIST TEMPLE OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA, with family visitation beginning at 10:00 am. Koden is respectfully declined.

Toshiko’s family would like to thank everyone at Garden View Lodge for making her final years rich, comfortable and safe. They would also like to thank the staff in 4C wing at Chinook Regional Hospital and St. Michael’s Health Centre for their kindness during Toshiko’s last few days; and to Salmon and Sons Funeral Home for their help in making final arrangements.
