ADACHI

On December 20, 2019, NANCY YOSHIYE (NÉE TANAKA) ADACHI passed peacefully after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s at the age of 77 years.

Nancy was born in Lethbridge on July 31, 1942.

She is survived by her husband, Roy Adachi; her two sons, Brad Kimura and Mark Kimura; her daughter-in-law, Mariko Kimura; her grandson, Noah Kimura; her brother, Art Tanaka, and her sister, Helen Mori, and sisters-in-law Fumiko Adachi and Kiyo Adachi as well as all of their families.

A private service will be held. Flowers and koden are gratefully declined.

Thomas Getty

1921 – 2019

Mr. Thomas Getty of Lethbridge, beloved husband of the late Mrs. Mabel Getty, passed away peacefully at St. Therese Villa on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at the age of 98 years. Tom served as an air force mechanic during the second world war from 1943 to 1945. He married his wife Mabel in 1945 and they enjoyed 74 happy years together prior to her passing in early 2019. They farmed in Pelly Saskatchewan for 28 years before moving to Alberta to tackle new adventures. They bought and operated a grocery store with daughter Janet and Tom continued to work on the farm with son Ken. Even after “retirement” it was a rare day that Tom wasn’t helping on the farm. He was able to fix just about anything and continued to be a valuable asset to the farming operation well into his 70’s. In their spare time Tom and Mabel enjoyed travelling in their motor home and camping with family. Tom and Mabel were also avid curlers in their younger years and enjoyed many bonspiels with family and friends. After retirement they were able to enjoy many trips to the Southern US. Tom will be deeply missed by his three children, Janet (Bill), Ken (Linda) and Shannon (Richard) as well as his five grandchildren, Rachel (Jamie), Jason (Tine), Julia (Lance), Torri and Kyler. Tom is also survived by 5 great grandchildren, Thomas, Emily, Colten, Makayla and Kaitlyn. A private family Graveside Service will be held at the Mountain View Cemetery where Tom will be laid to rest with his wife Mabel. Cremation has been entrusted to Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels.

Shirley Huddlestone

1934 – 2019

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley Huddlestone on Sunday, December 15, 2019 at Lethbridge Extendicare Fairmont at the age of 85 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of over 65 years Bob Huddlestone; son Barry (Debbie) Huddleston; daughter Tovi (Jim) Nalder; and granddaughter Celeste Nalder. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister Karen Cahoon. Shirley was a wonderful wife and mother. One of her special gifts was her ability to be a good listener, and she was always very patient and understanding. During her time on the family farm in Warner, she kept very active in the community and took great pride in creating a happy and loving home. After she and Bob moved to Coaldale, Shirley devoted much of her time to becoming a wonderful caregiver for her parents and many other family members. She had a passion for music and loved to play the piano. She was also interested in genealogy and kept the records for many family members, including putting together her cherished photo albums. Shirley and Bob also loved to travel, especially to Southern California on their yearly trips with friends and family. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring of 2020, with further details to be announced. Cremation has been entrusted to Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels. The family would like to thank the staff at Good Samaritan Park Meadows and Extendicare Fairmont for the excellent care they provided for Shirley, and they would also like to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Wilde for the extraordinary care that he provided. KAVANAGH

After a long, hard-fought battle with cancer, Laverne Atchison Kavanagh, 80, passed away peacefully Dec. 15 with her family by her bedside at her home in Whitefish. Laverne was born June 7, 1939, in Lethbridge, Alberta, to Mike and Frances Schmid. She grew up on a farm and ranch near in Warner, Alberta, and attended school in Warner where she was active in school functions, including playing basketball (No. 30) for the Warner Warriorettes. In 1956 she was named Raymond, Alberta, Rodeo Queen for winning barrel racing, congeniality and horsemanship. She graduated from Warner High School in 1957. After School she attended Mount Royal College in Calgary, Alberta, where she took a secretarial course and was also honored by being named Sweetheart of Mount Royal College. After college she moved to Cranbrook, British Columbia, where she worked for a law firm. Laverne married Charles Whitney Atchison on June 6, 1959, in Warner and they resided in Cranbrook. To this union were born three sons, Randall Whitney Atchison, Robert Atchison, Richard Atchison and daughter Lana. The couple later divorced, and Laverne moved to Lethbridge, Alberta, around 1968, where she raised her four children. In Lethbridge she worked for Schwartz Realty later moving to Calgary where she sold real estate for Builders Realty along with other business ventures and selling various products. Laverne was an avid, worldwide traveler spending her free time in 41 countries, encompassing six continents. She was also an avid and excellent skier and taught all her kids how to ski on Westcastle Mountain in Pincher Creek, Alberta. She continued skiing until she was stricken with cancer about a year and a half ago. While she has skied numerous mountains, including some in Europe, Big Mountain in Whitefish was always her favorite. Whitefish is where she met John Kavanagh and the couple had been together for 23 years. They spent their time happily together hiking, fishing boating, huckleberry picking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, 4-wheeling, swimming, dancing and traveling throughout Montana, Canada, Ireland, Hawaii and various other destinations in the United States. They also enjoyed spending time in Canada visiting family and friends and at their river property in Essex and in Shelby where they have many friends. Laverne was an excellent cook, rarely using a recipe and passed her cuisine skills onto to her four children. She especially enjoyed cooking at family gatherings in Whitefish. Her bright smile, outgoing personality, kind and gentle demeanor touched the hearts of everyone who knew her. She will be greatly missed, but the beautiful memories of her will live on forever. She is survived by her two brothers Bernie (Heather) Schmid, Warner, Alberta; Wayne (Leona) Schmid, Claresholm, Alberta; three sons Randy (Gwen) Atchison, Canmore, Alberta; Rob Atchison, Calgary, Alberta; Rick (Kim) Atchison, Sylvan Lake, Alberta; stepson Brian (LeAnne) Kavanagh, Cut Bank, Montana; stepdaughters Barb (Tres) Genger, Cut Bank, Montana; Darcy (Brian) White, Shelby, Montana; Tracy (Jeff) Swanson, Happy Valley, Oregon; 16 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Lana (Brian) Lukenda. A celebration of Laverne’s life will be held in the spring, the date, time and place to be announced later. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations in Laverne’s memory be made to the charity of one’s choice.

KRAUSE

It is with the saddest of hearts that we announce the passing of Pastor JAMES “JIM” WAYNE KRAUSE, beloved husband of the late Jean Krause, beloved dad, grandpa, brother and friend to many. Jim passed away surrounded by family at the Milk River Health Centre on Monday, December 16, 2019 at the age of 86 years. After a courageous battle with cancer, Jim was taken home to be with his Lord and Saviour.

Donette Luchansky

1955 – 2019

Donette Roseanne Luchansky born December 26, 1955, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2019. Donette was predeceased by her mother Alice Luchansky. She is survived by her father Leonard Luchansky of Diamond City; her son Jason (Jean) Adamus of Calgary; sister Beverly (Terry) Hendricks of Lethbridge; brother Rodney (Charlotte) Luchansky of Nelson, BC; sister Tammy (David) Luchansky of Lethbridge; as well as several loving nieces, grand-niece and grand-nephews. Donette grew up in Lethbridge and area and was an alumnus of the University of Lethbridge, Faculty of Management. She had a love of nature, especially animals and was known for her profound love for her pets. Special thanks to the staff and doctors at St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit, the Chinook Regional Hospital, to Stan Adamus of Lethbridge, and to the many family and friends that visited during this difficult time. At Donette’s request, the family will share her memories privately. For those who wish, donations in Donette’s memory can be made to the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter or the SPCA.

Dr. Kenneth William Richards

August 10, 1946 – December 17, 2019

It is with deepest regret that we announce the sudden passing of Ken Richards, beloved husband of Linda Mae (Ost) Richards of Lethbridge. Also grieving his passing are Dr. Kimberly Richards (Abbotsford, B.C.), Keith and Dr. Theresa Richards (Portland), Aaron and Julia and grandchildren, Thea and Elliot (Seattle). How proud Ken was of his family! He loved doing things with them. He loved to hear the ways they challenge themselves and what they contribute to the world. Ken’s passing will also be grieved by a circle of friends and scientific colleagues from Lethbridge, Saskatoon and around the world. Ken was the son of Doris (Larmour) and William “Bill” Richards of Lethbridge (predeceased), and the brother of Deborah (Victoria, B.C.). As a junior high student Ken was part of Dr. Ruby Larson’s science club. Caught by the science bug, he studied at the U. of A. and did summer bee research at Beaverlodge and on Ellesmere Island. Ken obtained a PhD in Entomology from the University of Kansas where he studied with famed entomologist, Dr. Charles D. Michener. The topic of his dissertation was “Population Ecology of Bumble Bees in Southern Alberta.” Ken and his first wife, Lynn, did the research for his dissertation west of Pincher Creek. After convocation, Ken returned to Lethbridge Research Station to work with leaf cutter bees and pollination. Much of the success of his work at Lethbridge Research Station was accomplished with his lifelong friend and workmate, John Virostek. Happy to add to Ken and Lynn’s lives was the birth of sons, Keith and Aaron, born during those years. Following his marriage to Linda Mae in 1986, Ken and Linda spent a year at world leader Rothamsted Experimental Station at Harpenden, England where Ken studied the use of leaf cutter bees in the pollination of lupine flowers. They returned to their previous jobs in Lethbridge, and in 1989 their daughter, Kimberly, was born. In 1996 Ken took over management of Canada’s Plant Genetic Resources with its relocation to Saskatoon from Ottawa. Ken supervised the construction of the new Gene Bank attached to Agriculture and Agri-food Canada at the University of Saskatchewan. Ken and Tim Myers divided in half every packet of the 550,000 packet collection of plant seeds for the transfer. Half of the collection was sent by surface trucks and half of the collection was relocated by a Canadian government Hercules airplane. In subsequent years the plant collection was joined in Saskatoon by the microbial, fruit tree and animal collections. Ken assembled and supervised a wonderful team of scientists who worked from P.E.I. to the B.C. Okanagan. He and Linda and Kimberly lived in beautiful Saskatoon for fifteen years. Ken was a great ambassador for Canadian agriculture and Canadian bees. He represented Canada at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the U. N. for the ratification of treaties sharing and protecting genetic material. He delivered the Canadian collection of genetic material to Svalbard, Norway to the opening of the Global Seed Vault. In 2011 Ken and Linda retired to a wonderful Lethbridge acreage where Ken could grow bee-friendly, native Canadian plants, and Linda could have her horses. An active member of the Lethbridge and District Horticultural Society, Ken keenly grew plants and planted them in the Hort section of the new Legacy Park. Ken returned to previous research conducting native bee counts at Waterton before and after the 2017 fire. During bee season he would weekly walk a section of the park identifying the bees and recording what flowers they were visiting. Parks Canada benefitted from this accumulated research report. Ken was a world-class scientist, loving father, dedicated friend and community member, a beloved husband. Ken and Linda loved to travel together. Botanical gardens, theatre and art galleries brought them such pleasure. Ken loved to share his immense knowledge of plants and bees to interested individuals or public presentations. A tribute event will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you plant some bee-friendly flowers in your garden, or made donations to Lethbridge and District Horticultural Club, or Canadian Wildlife Federation.

Elisabeth Hendrina (Ellie) Slingerland

July 21, 1968 – December 20, 2019

The Lord in His infinite wisdom has taken from our side, Elisabeth Hendrina (Ellie) our loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister (in-law) and friend at the age of 51 years on December 20, 2019 at the St. Michael’s Palliative Care Facility. She passed away in peace after a 9 month battle with cancer. After 31 years of loving service, she leaves to mourn her husband Willem Slingerland (Wim) and their children Heidi & Piet Heger (Jayden, Justin, Ryan, and Bradley), Caroline, Martina & Abe den Hollander (Jacob), John & Henriët (Eric), William & Janita, Joshua, Elsa and friend Larry Kleinsasser, Nathan, Martin, Louise, Lynette, Ezra, Allen, and Lydia; parents Jan & Corrie Groenendijk; siblings Jannie & Pete Van Waardhuizen, Wim & Brenda Groenendijk, Jos & Judy Groenendijk, Corine & Tim Hunt, Gerard & Henrieke Groenendijk; in-laws Gerie & Bas de Peuter, Jannie & Jaap Stouten, Jacob & Nellie, Aris, Gonnie & Kor Vanden Hoek, Martin & Jeanette, Case & Rose, Adam & Annie, Hank & Arlene, Tony & Lisa, Diane, Judy & Chris den Hertog, Marinus & Wilma; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Ellie is the oldest child born to Jan & Corrie Groenendijk on July 21, 1968 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She immigrated to Canada in 1981 with her family. Wim & Ellie were married in 1988 and resided at their farm till her passing. Ellie was guardian of Roxene and Sandra. She was active in community service, church, school and mission. 1919 – 2019
Jean Hisako Tatebe, beloved wife of the late Joe Tatebe, passed away in Taber on Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at the age of 100 years.

Although she did not have any children, Jean was like a mother to her siblings and to many others in her life. She was the first of four children born to Fusakichi Fujimagari and his first wife, Misu Hayashi in Burnaby, British Columbia and was a half sister to the children from a second family. Of her siblings, she is survived by Joyce Hirasawa, Margaret Clark and sister-in-law Hiroye Fujimagari; her step children Albert Tatebe, Joan Bielun, Dalphy Pollard and Rodney Tatebe and by numerous extended family.
She was predeceased by her husband Joe Tatebe in 2011 and her first husband Eichi Kitagawa in 1986; brothers Jack, Yoshio, Taketomo Fujimagari and her sisters Takeko Baba and Akiko “Anne” Kamitakahara; brothers-in-law Harry Baba, George Hirasawa and Ken Clark; sisters-in-law Mary Fujimagari and Barbara Fujimagari and numerous other family members.
