Horns roll to win over Cougars in men’s basketball play

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men kicked off 2020 on a high-
scoring — and winning — note.
Starting the second semester of Canada West basketball play, the Horns
hit triple digits in a 110-92 win over the Regina Cougars Friday night
at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.
The Horns grabbed a commanding 51-33 lead at halftime en route to the
win that improves them to 4-7.
Meanwhile, the Pronghorns women made a late push against the Cougars,
but the attempted comeback fell short as the Cougars held on for a
78-70 win that drops the Horns to 5-6 and hands them their fifth
straight loss.
On the men’s side, Colton Gibb led the offensive charge with 34
points, while Jeff Rodehutskors added 24.
Gibb and Rodehutskors each posted a double-double with 12 and 11
rebounds, respectively.
Scott Mazutinec hit for 17 points for Lethbridge and Keanu Funa had 16.
Gibb, Brett Warren and Kyle Peterson each had six assists as the
Pronghorns shot 55.3 per cent from the field, 45 per cent from the
three-point line and 77.3 per cent on free throws.
In the women’s game, the Pronghorns trailed 51-33 at the half.
The hosts outscored the Cougars 23-17 in the third quarter and 14-10
in the fourth quarter and pulled within two in the dying minutes, but
were unable to complete the comeback.
Asnate Fomina led the Pronghorns with 21 points — shooting five-for-
eight from the three-point line — while Kacie Bosch added 16 and
Jessica Haenni had 12.
Katie Keith grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Pronghorns were 41.3 per cent from the field and hit 47.4 per
cent of their shots beyond the arc. They were 56.3 per cent on free
throws.
The teams are back at the 1st Choice Savings Centre tonight starting
with the women’s game at 5 p.m.
The men wrap up the evening at 7 p.m.
