Kyodokan Judo Club members win gold

The Lethbridge Kyodokan Judo Club struck gold at the Elite National Championship last weekend in Montreal.

The local club topped the field among the U18 clubs at the two-day event and took home several medals in the process.

Kicking off the first day Saturday, the U18 contingent of Brynn Iwaasa, Evelyn Beaton and Caleb DeMaere won gold.

Iwaasa topped the field in the -44 kg category, while Beaton and DeMaere took home gold in the -48 kg and -50 kg divisions, respectively.

Charlize Medilo took second in the -48 kg and Aliya Koliaska (-52 kg) and Nathan DeMaere (-66 kg) earned bronze medals.

On Sunday, the LKJC won five more gold medals in the senior event.

Evelyn Beaton was tops in the -48 kg, while Taeya Koliaska (-52 kg), Joel DeMaere (-60 kg), Brae Booth (-70 kg) and Shianne Gronen (-78 kg) also topped the podium.

Virginia Nemeth won silver in the -48 kg category and Charlize Medilo took bronze, also in the -48 kg.
