University of Lethbridge Pronghorn basketball teams tangle with a provincial rival in a home-and-home series for the second time in two weeks when they battle the Mount Royals Cougars tonight and Saturday in Canada West play.

The Pronghorns are in Calgary tonight, before hosting the rematches Saturday, women’s game at 5 p.m. and the men at 7 p.m. Last weekend, both Pronghorn teams played tough against the nationally ranked University of Calgary Dinos, but were unable to come away with a victory.

The Pronghorn men (4-10) currently hold the final playoff spot in Canada West. Lethbridge still has one of the most balanced offensive attacks in Canada West with six players averaging double digits in points. Colton Gibb leads the team with 14.4 points per game and also leads the team in rebounding with 6.7 per game.

Senior guard Kyle Peterson is averaging 12.2 points and ranks second in Canada West in assists per game with 5.3.

After opening the season with three straight wins, the Cougars (3-9) have lost their last nine games and were swept at home last weekend by the Manitoba Bisons.

In 12 games this season, the Cougars hold the 11th-ranked team offence in the conference scoring 82.4 points per game and are ranked 16th in team defence, allowing 95.6 points against per game.

Guard Matthew Guinto leads the Cougars attack with 16.7 points per game, while Lincoln Anderson and Adam Pahl sit second and third with 11.5 and 11.4 points per game respectively.

The Pronghorn women (6-8) also look to finish the season strong, entering the final six games of the season. Statistically, the Pronghorns rank 10th offensively, scoring 66.3 points per game, while sitting seventh defensively allowing 68.4 points per game.

Senior guard Kacie Bosch has been stellar since the calendar turned, recording double-doubles in three of the four games since the semester break. Bosch leads the Pronghorns in scoring with 15.3 points per game and is averaging 7.1 rebounds per game. She also sits second in the conference in steals with 38.

Katie Keith is still among the conference rebounding leaders, sitting third in Canada West with 9.4 rebounds per game. She is also averaging 10 points per game.

The Cougars (4-8) will also look to put an end to a losing streak having lost their last three games, including being swept at home last weekend by the Manitoba Bisons.

Through 12 games this season, the Cougars sit 12th in team offence scoring 61.5 points per game and are ranked 11th defensively allowing 69.5 points against.

First-year forward Jenika Martens leads the Cougars in scoring and rebounding, averaging 11.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

Saturday night’s game will also be the program’s annual ‘Shoot for a Cure’ game, a U SPORTS initiative to raise funds to support breast cancer research.
