Horns womens hockey falls to the Pandas

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s hockey team were unable to snap a losing skid against a Canada West powerhouse.

The Horns were downed 6-1 by the Alberta Pandas Friday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena to fall to 7-12-1-1 and are now winless in seven games.

The U SPORTS seventh-ranked Pandas scored four second-period goals en route to the win as the teams wrap up their weekend series this afternoon at 1 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

Tallon Stephenson scored the Pronghorns only goal – her first of the season – to make it 4-1 Pandas in the second.

Kennedy Ganser scored twice for the Pandas. Danielle Hardy, Kelsey Tangjerd, Payton Laumbach and Madison Willan scored once each for Alberta.

Pronghorns goaltender Alicia Anderson stopped 15 of 21 shots in the first two periods before backup Chloe Marshall came on in the third period, stopping all seven shots she faced.

Halle Oswald turned aside 25 of 26 shots to earn the win for Alberta.

In Edmonton Friday night, the Horns men’s team dropped a close 4-2 decision to the Golden Bears to put the team at 5-15-1-0 and in seventh in the Canada West.

The Pronghorns got second period goals from Evan Wardley and Michael Clarke in the opening 7:42 of the second to briefly go up 2-1, but the Golden Bears scored twice in the second and once in the third to clinch the win. Grayson Pawlenchuk, Cole Sanford, Noah Philip and Chad Butcher scored for Alberta.

Jack Burgart made 43 saves in the loss, while Golden Bears goaltedner Brendan Burke stopped 16 of 18 for the win.

The teams complete the weekend tonight at 7 p.m.
