LETHBRIDGE HERALD – OKOTOKS
Jodi Vaughan defeated Casey Scheidegger 5-4 in a battle of Lethbridge Curling Club rinks in the second draw of the 2020 Sentinel Storage Alberta Scotties Tournament of Hearts on Wednesday.
The win improved Vaughan’s rink of Jody McNabb at third, Nicole Larson at second and Valerie Ekelund at lead to 1-1 after the first day of play.
Vaughan opened with a 9-3 loss to Kayla Skrlik of Calgary.
It’s turned out to be a rocky start for the Scheidegger rink, which includes Cary-Anne McTaggart at third, Jessie Haughian at second and Kristie Moore at lead. They fell 12-5 to Krystal Hilker of St. Albert in the opening draw Wednesday.
Scheidegger is returning to competition as skip after recently giving birth. Against Hilker, Scheidegger opened with a deuce in the second end, but Hilker came back with a single in the third and a steal of one in the fourth.
After Scheidegger took a 3-2 lead, Hilker broke the game open with four in the sixth end, adding two in the eighth and four in the ninth.
In the evening draw, Vaughan stole a single point in the fourth end for a 3-1 lead and held the edge the rest of the way.
Hilker, Kelsey Rocque of Edmonton and Laura Walker of Edmonton are all 2-0 after the first day of play. The Walker rink includes Lethbridge native Taylor McDonald throwing second stones.
Vaughan and Kayla Skrlik of Calgary are 1-1, while Nicky Kaufman of Edmonton and Marla Sherrer of Lacombe join Scheidegger at 0-2.
In other second-draw games, Walker dumped Sherrer 9-2, Rocque beat Kaufman 5-3, and Hilker outscored Skrlik 10-6.
In the opening draw, Rocque defeated Sherrer 7-5, while Walker outscored Kaufman 12-10 in an extra end.
In games today, Vaughan faces Walker in the 3 p.m. draw, and Hilker in the 8:30 p.m. draw.
Scheidegger plays Kaufman at 3 p.m. and Skrlik at 8:30 pm.
