Midget Canes fall to Raiders

The Lethbridge midget AAA Hurricanes came up short of handing the St. Albert Nektar Raiders their second loss of the season.
The Canes lost 4-2 to the Alberta Midget Hockey League-leading Raiders Saturday afternoon at the Logan Boulet Arena in their only game last weekend.
Lethbridge led 2-1 after the second period, but three Raiders goals in the third period powered St. Albert to the win that keeps them atop the AMHL at 23-1-3, while the Canes are 14-9-5 with the loss and tied for third place in the Chrysler Division with the 14-8-5 Calgary Flames and the 15-10-3 Red Deer Optimist Chiefs.
They’re also two points back of the Okotoks Bow Mark Oilers (16-8-3).
The Raiders led 1-0 after the first period on a goal from Ty Cheveldayoff, but second-period goals from Nolan Price and Rylen Roersma handed Lethbridge a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.
St. Albert tied it at 2-2 1:26 into the third on a goal from Koehn Ziemmer and netted the game winner a little over five minutes later on Cheveldayoff’s second of the game.
Noah Wilson added an insurance marker for the Raiders with 3:41 left.
Hurricanes goaltender Ty Young stopped 38 shots in the loss, including 16 in the first period.
The Canes are on the road for the rest of the regular season with four away games.
They’re in Okotoks Saturday to take on the Oilers and head to Calgary Sunday to face the Flames.
In Alberta Minor Midget Hockey League play last weekend, the Lethbridge Headwater Hurricanes midget 15s were 2-0 to take over second place in the South Division, blanking the AC Avalanche in the process.
In a battle for second in the South, Hurricanes goaltender Kaiden Fulton stopped all 35 shots he faced as Lethbridge downed the Avalanche 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Logan Boulet Arena to improve to 21-3-4 and two points ahead of the Avalanche for second place.
On Saturday the Canes were in Calgary, posting a 5-1 win over the CBHA Blackhawks.
On Sunday, Caden Heins gave Lethbridge a 1-0 lead after the first period and Vann Yuhas put the hosts up 2-0 in the second period.
The Hurricanes doubled their lead in the opening 4:35 of the third as Malachai North Peigan and Jamieson Franz found the back of the net.
Yuhas and Franz each had an assist for a two-point afternoon.
The Hurricanes trailed the Blackhawks 1-0 after the first period Saturday in Calgary, but second-period goals from Heins, Franz and North Peigan handed Lethbridge a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.
Sheldon Sawyer and Drew Constant added third period goals for the Canes to ice the win.
Sawyer also had an assist for two points and Zachary Rajcic chipped in with two helpers.
Nixon Ordway got the start in goal for Lethbridge, making 18 saves in the win.
The Hurricanes are five points behind the 24-1-3 Okotoks Oilers for first place in the South.
The chase continues this weekend when the Canes travel to Calgary Saturday to play the 12-11-6 NWCAA Bruins and return home to the Logan Boulet Arena Sunday at 11:45 a.m. when the 10-13-5 Medicine Hat SEAC Tigers pay a visit.
The Lethbridge Val Matteotti bantam AAA Golden Hawks went 1-1 in an Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League homestand.
The Golden Hawks lost 5-1 to the Airdrie Xtreme Friday night at the ATB Centre, but came away with a 2-1 victory over the Grande Prairie GPAC Golden Arrow Storm Sunday at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
With the .500 weeken the Golden Hawks are 8-18-0 to remain in fourth place in the Ram South Division.
On Friday, the Hawks held a 1-0 lead after the first period on a goal from Caden Still.
But four Xtreme goals in the second and another in the third paced the visitors to the decision.
Golden Hawks goaltender Thomas MacLean faced 21 shots in the loss.
On Sunday at Nicholas Sheran Arena, Kade Duell scored with 51 seconds left for the Golden Hawks for the game-winner after the Storm scored in the first minute of the third to tie it up.
John Szabo scored in the first period for the other Lethbridge goal, while Brenner Fyfe kicked out 24 shots in the win.
The Golden Hawks head into a full February with seven games on the slate.
They’re home against the Calgary Royals Saturday at 4:15 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran and head to Red Deer Sunday to take on the Ram South-leading Rebels (22-2-2).
After winning their home tournament the previous weekend, the Lethbridge midget AA Hurricanes returned to their South Central Alberta Hockey League schedule, earning a win and a tie.
The Hurricanes defeated the Nanton Foothills Bisons 6-1 Friday night at Henderson Arena and skated to a 2-2 tie with the Calgary CBHA Rangers Sunday in Calgary.
The win and tie move the Canes to 8-12-4.
On Friday, Lethbridge got two goals from Brandon Creighton and Koden Lazar while Syprus Ives and R.J. Loo added one each.
Creighton had an assist and Ives added two helpers for a three-point night each.
Conner Furukawa and Luke Preddy each had two assists and goaltender Alex Resler stopped 21 of 22 shots to post the win.
There was no scoresheet available for Sunday’s tie in Calgary.
The Hurricanes are on the road this weekend. They head to Nanton Saturday to take on the Bisons and play the Oilers in Okotoks Sunday.
Lethbridge returns home Feb. 8 when they host the West Central Tigers at 7:15 p.m. at Henderson Arena.
