Pronghorns women resume playoff fight

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorn women’s hockey team battle the UBC Thunderbirds this weekend in Vancouver, with both teams scrambling for a Canada West playoff spot.

The teams play tonight at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m., both games available on http://www.canadawest.tv.

With a regulation win last weekend over the Mount Royal Cougars, the Pronghorns (7-13-1-3) moved within four points of the Thunderbirds for the final playoff spot in Canada West. Two regulation time victories over the Cougars would push the Pronghorns past the T-Birds with one weekend remaining in the season.

With her next appearance, fifth-year Pronghorn goaltender Alicia Anderson will tie Crystal Patterson for the Canada West-lead in career appearances by a goaltender. Last Saturday, Anderson became the Canada West all-time leader in minutes played by a goaltender, passing former Saskatchewan Huskie Cassidy Hendricks.

Third-year forward Kyra Greig continues to lead the Pronghorns attack with five goals and 11 assists.

Wins have also been hard to come by for the Thunderbirds (8-11-1-4) having only won one of their last 11 games, snapping a nine-game losing streak two weekends ago in Winnipeg.

The T-Birds were swept last weekend by the Saskatchewan Huskies.

UBC goaltender Tory Micklash has played in 22 games and has played the third most minutes in the conference this season behind Anderson and Calgary’s Kelsey Roberts.

Hannah Clayton-Carroll leads the Thunderbirds in scoring with eight goals and eight assists and had four points in two games versus the Pronghorns during the two-game series during the first semester.

The Pronghorns close out the Canada West regular-season schedule next weekend with a home-and-home series with the Calgary Dinos.
