Tough finish for Horns rugby team

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s rugby sevens team has a strong start on the second stop of the Canada West Sevens Series last weekend, but not the finish they were hoping for.

The Horns rattled off three straight wins during the opening day of competition at the event UBC Thunderbirds-hosted event in Vancouver, but dropped 24-0 and 21-17 decisions to Thunderbirds and the Alberta Pandas, respectively.

The 3-2 weekend puts the Horns in fourth place heading into the final stop of the series Feb. 29 to March 1, hosting in Victoria by the Vikes. Victoria sits in first overall having won the first two stops in the series, 12 points ahead of the Pronghorns.

In the semifinals Sunday, the Thunderbirds scored three first-half tries and added another in the second to salt the win.

In the third place game, the Pronghorns led 12-7 after the first half and 17-7 early in the second half, but a pair of late Alberta tries pushed the Pandas ahead.

Carolyn McKee and Hailey Driscoll scored the Pronghorns tries. Lethbridge’s other score came on a penalty try that gave them a 12-7 lead at the half.

On Saturday, the Pronghorns kicked off the weekend with a 22-0 win over the Trinity Western Spartans as Janelle Agot, Christina Norsten, Abby Duguid and Rebecca Powell scored Lethbridge’s tries. Agot added a try.

The Horns posted another shutout win in their second game via a 36-0 whitewashing of the Fraser Valley Cascades.

Duguid, Abby Neudorf, Genna Wright, Norsten, Sydney De La Mare and Powell scored for the Pronghorns. Agot added two converts and Erin McFadden had one.

Lethbridge ended the day with a close 15-14 win over the Pandas.

The Pronghorns trailed 14-5 after the first half before tries from Driscoll and Caitlin Sears handed Lethbridge the one-point win.

Sara Cline scored the Horns lone first half try.
