Lethbridge School Division’s annual scholarship breakfast is bringing in a Winston Churchill High School hall of famer as this year’s guest speaker.

“We are very excited to have CBC reporter, Judy Trinh, as our keynote speaker this year,” said Lethbridge School Division trustee Christine Light. “As an alumni of Winston Churchill, Judy’s story of immigrating to Canada and growing up as a minority in Lethbridge speaks to the power and enrichment of diversity and community support.”

The 2020 Canada 150 ICE Awards Scholarship breakfast is Friday at the Sandman Signature Lethbridge Lodge. It is the fourth version of an event which helps build partnership and raises funds for a good cause.

“The purpose of our breakfast is twofold: to connect and grow Lethbridge School Division’s relationships with members of our business community, and to give opportunity for these businesses to partner with us and support our students by building a strong financial base that will enable The Canada 150 ICE Scholarship to continue for years to come.”

Light added the event simply could not function without the contributions of local businesses.

“The support we have received from our community is incredible and we are so appreciative,” she said. “This year we have over 20 businesses supporting The Canada 150 ICE Scholarship, some of which are joining us for the first time this year. Every person has a part in making their community flourish. When an individual or an organization steps in and shows up to support, not only does that communicate to our students, ‘we believe in you,’ it demonstrates a care and investment into the future of our community both locally and globally.”

The scholarship serves to recognize students who go above and beyond in three key areas – innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship.

“The Canada 150 ICE Scholarship was started four years ago to celebrate students’ achievements in these areas,” said Light. “We have incredibly gifted, imaginative and forward-thinking students in our division. We wanted to create a place for these achievements to be both showcased and awarded.”

Each year, the goal is to award two $1,000 scholarships to Grade 9 and Grade 10 students, and two $1,000 scholarships to Grade 11 and Grade 12 students. So far, there have been 11 scholarship winners, and a total of $8,000 has been awarded.

“The diversity of projects we have seen has been really fantastic,” said Light. “Innovation can be planted in any field. We’re excited to see what we will be presented with this year.”
