Man charged with sexual assault

Lethbridge Police have charged a 33-year-old man in connection with an incident where a woman was allegedly sexually assaulted.

On Saturday morning, police responded to a report of an alleged sexual assault. Police say their investigation determined that on the previous night, an 18-year-old woman attended a bar along the 1200 block of 1 Avenue South with a friend.

During the evening the pair met a man and when the 18-year-old suddenly became unwell, he offered to drive her and her friend to their homes, according to police. After taking the 18-year-old inside, he left the residence, police say.

A short time later he returned, entered the home and allegedly sexually assaulted the victim, according to police.

The alleged victim was transported to Chinook Regional Hospital for treatment and released later in the day.

Following further investigation, police say a man was identified and arrested. A search warrant was obtained and executed at the suspect’s home and police recovered evidence related to the alleged offence, including the alleged victim’s cellphone.

Sohil Bindra, 33, of Lethbridge, is charged with housebreaking and commit sexual assault and two counts of sexual assault. He was released from custody by a Justice of the Peace on conditions that he have no contact with the victim or witnesses, not attend within 200 metres of either woman’s home, and is prohibited from attending any licensed premises where the primary business is the sale of alcohol.

Bindra is scheduled to appear in court March 2.
