Galentine’s Day to benefit YWCA Harbour House

Each February for the last three years, Girl Gang Kindness Lethbridge has teamed up with Hudsons Canada’s Pub to help bring an evening of kindness and support for the YWCA Harbour House and Amethyst Project.
The annual Galentine’s Day is not only a way to bring together and celebrate the kindness spread throughout the community, but is also a way to give back to organizations who are doing good in the community such as YWCA Harbour House, which supports women and children leaving violent domestic situations.
“We are in our third year of hosting Galentine’s Day, so we are a group of women who got together to help spread kindness in our community by helping organizations that are already doing great work,” says Jess Fehr, co-founder of Girl Gang Kindness Lethbridge. “When Galentine’s Day came about, we thought who better to support than women in our community, so we dreamed up having this fundraiser that all the proceeds went to the YWCA Harbour House and Amethyst Project, which are programs that need a lot of attention and money.”
Throughout the evening, participants will receive a drink and full access to the churro bar, along with draw prizes and speeches. Over the last two Galentine’s Day events, Girl Gang Kindness has been able to raise over $4,900 to support Harbour House and the Amethyst Project.
“Our first ever Galentine’s Day was a success and we didn’t really know what to expect, and then last year we grew even more and this year we have actually sold out Hudson’s. We sold all of our tickets and all the money goes toward YWCA Harbour House and Amethyst project,” says Fehr. “It is incredible, it is actually a bit overwhelming for us. This started as a really small, grassroots organization where we would do small random acts of kindness in the community. We would hand out toques and scarves in the downtown core, we would give out roses on International Women’s Day, but we have received so much overwhelming support from our community and it really shows how much spreading kindness in our community helps right now.”
During the year, Girl Gang Kindness supports different organizations and charities, as well as assisting some of the most vulnerable in the community. Twice a year, the group hosts two main charity events, Galentine’s in February and Get the Fundraiser Outside in August.
“Girl Gang Kindness, we operate all year long doing different sorts of things where we will give call-outs on social media to get involved to help with the Coulee Cleanup, or to help spread kindness in your own way,” says Fehr. “We have another fundraiser at Hudson’s called Get the Fundraiser Outside in August and every year that charity of choice will change, and last year we raised $6,000 for the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation with the support from our community and it is the most we have raised so far.”
Although this year’s Galentine’s Day event is sold out, there are some standing room tickets available at the door the night of the event, today from 5-7 p.m. at Hudson’s Canada’s Pub.
