A Lethbridge man whose blood was found at the site of a business break-
in last year has been sent to jail.
Larry Brent Ovens pleaded guilty Friday in Lethbridge provincial court
to several offences, including five break-ins, and was sentenced to 15
months behind bars.
One of the break-ins was at a city liquor store, in which culprits
smashed a hole in an exterior cinder block wall and stole 70 bottles
of liquor. Although there wasn’t any evidence to prove who actually
smashed the wall or stole the liquor, Ovens, whose blood was found on
the cinder blocks, pleaded guilty as a party to the offence.
Ovens, 55, also broke into a service station last April and stole 71
packs of cigarettes. He was identified by the businesses video
surveillance camera.
Then between May and June of last year Ovens committed three
commercial break-ins. He stole 370 pounds of “high-end” dog food after
he broke into Highland’s Pet Hospital, and during a break-in to an oil
change shop he stole a number of movie passes. A cash register was
also reported stolen.
Ovens was also caught on video after he broke into the Safeway Liquor
Store, from which he stole 48 cases of liquor.
In addition to the break-ins, Ovens also pleaded guilty to one count
of breaching probation for failing to attend counselling and one count
of resisting a peace officer for trying to flee after he was arrested
for an offence.
“I would just like to apologize for my behaviour,” Ovens told the
judge. “It’s all due to a drug addiction.”
Ovens was given credit for 429 days he spent in custody on the
charges, leaving him with 21 days left to serve.
